Aandhiyan review :
A comeback vehicle for the 70s sex symbol Mumtaz, Aandhiyan proved to be a stormy re-introduction for the evergreen beauty. Ditto for Bengali star Prosenjit Chatterjee making his Bollywood debut.
At the start of the film, we get shocked to see a much older but still beautiful Mumtaz with young Prosenjit under a tree only to realise later that they are maa-beta. Mumtaz plays single parent to Chatterjee after she was disowned by her ambitious pati Shatrughan Sinha on his pappa Om Shivpuri's behest.
Rising up the political ranks, Shotgun Sinha is now the State Chief Minister no less. The plot then revolves around how beta Prosenjit tries to get his maa-baap together. Will he succeed?
Directed by David Dhawan, this was one of his earlier films before discovering his comic mojo with Govinda. Aandhiyan was produced by Pahlaj Nihalani who delivered many hits with David later like Shola Aur Shabnam (1992) and Aankhen (1993).
I saw Aandhiyan only for Mumtaz and the film didnt disappoint me that much. It was an okay fare for 1990. But the audience were in no mood to see the yesteryear siren in a character role and rejected the film completely.
Released at Mumbai's Metro cinema, Aandhiyan was out from that prestigious theatre in just a week and shifted to Swastik cinema, Lamington road where it ran for a couple of weeks only. The film is largely remembered for Mumtaz's attempted comeback which sadly failed.
