This week, DC and Warner Bros. made a startling announcement: they are going to begin making films that are not set within the larger DC Extended Universe, instead launching a second, new banner for “elseworld” stories such as the already announced Joker origin film set in the ‘80s. Before this announcement, DC was full steam ahead with a cohesive movie universe not unlike Marvel Studios’ own Marvel Cinematic Universe, meaning every movie from Batman V Superman to Justice League to The Batman would all be part of one larger narrative, the same way the Captain America trilogy, The Avengers, and even Doctor Strange are all connected. It is the age of the movie universe, and DC is second only to Marvel in developing their own, with four movies already released, starting with 2013’s Man of Steel, and two more officially in production, this November’s Justice League and next year’s Aquaman.

So, spoiler alert. The comic industry as we know it is going to die. Well, according to Dan Didio and Jim Lee it is. At the San Diego Comic Con – which I clearly didn’t attend because I already knew comics were dying – the DC honchos all but shook their rain sticks at the assembled retailers to eulogize the industry before revealing how they would save it.
Forgive me. You no doubt heard the thundering cacophony of my right eyebrow arching high on my face at a speed worthy of Barry Allen. The speed at which it jutted there clearly broke the sound barrier in a reflex akin only to those meta-humans with the ability to transcend space and time.
There’s literally too much to unpack from all they blabbed on about for me to fit in a single column. And rather than present evidence how the comic industry isn’t dying at all,...

Joel Schumacher has just apologised (again) about Batman & Robin, a film that lots of talented people are sorry about...
It may have shifted a fair few toys and given us some great Arnie lines to recite, but Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin will mainly be remembered as a franchise killer. What Tim Burton began with the luscious, gothic brace of Batman and Batman Returns, Schumacher well and truly wrote off with the colourful crapness of Batman & Robin.
The Bat-franchise managed to live on after Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones chewed the scenery into tiny little pieces during Batman Forever, but Bat-nipples, “cool party!”, and Alfred making a skin-tight costume for his niece was just too much for the series to survive.
Nowadays, if reviewers savage a film, the cast and crew come out and defend it. They say things like ‘we made this for the fans,...

Adam West, who was beloved for generations as the man under the crimefighting cowl in the 1960s Batman TV series, passed away yesterday at the age of 88. West had an acting career going back to the 1950s. Today, Cinelinx pays homage to a gentleman who loved his fans, as we say goodbye to Adam West
Adam West loved playing Batman. Beginning with the Batman Tv show (1966-1969), he continued being involved with DC Batman projects, including Batman: the Movie (1966), The Super Friends (or Super Powers Team), the New Adventures of Batman, Tarzan and the Super Seven, The Legends of the Super heroes, Batman: the Animated Series, the Batman: New Times video game, The 2004-2006 Batman cartoon, Batman: the Brave & the Bold, Robot Chicken, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, and the upcoming Batman vs. Two-Face. Through all these projects, for over five decades, West voiced either the Batman or one of his supporting cast.

What's this? Could this be the end for Batman? Rest in peace, Adam West, the one and only Caped Crusader who truly defined the role. There have been so many incarnations of Batman over the years – on the page and on the screen – but Adam West was the one flesh-and-blood actor who ever did justice to the cape, on the Sixties TV series Batman.
West, who died of leukemia Friday at the age of 88, brought deadpan humor and old-school gallantry to the role, week after week; same Bat Time, same Bat Channel.

Dick Grayson isn’t just part of the Teen Titans. He’s leading the Teen Titans.Young Justice (2010)
Lately, we’ve been blessed with an overabundance of good comic news. First, 20th Century Fox releases dates for Deadpool 2, New Mutants, and Dark Phoenix. Now an interesting announcement from Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment.
Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment announced that they are launching a “digital streaming service” at an undisclosed time in 2018. They were obtuse on the details, but the gist is that this streaming service is an “immersive experience designed for the fans.” The service will host a live-action Teen Titans show called Titans and the third season of Young Justice: Outsiders.

Batgirl is coming to the big screen, and Joss Whedon is helping her get there. The “Avengers” helmer will write, direct and produce a standalone film for Warner Bros. about the superheroine, reports Variety. The movie, to which no one else is yet attached, will be part of the DC Extended Universe and follow this summer’s “Wonder Woman” as the second project in that franchise to center around a female lead.

This article contains mild spoilers for The Lego Batman Movie and Batman: Return Of The Caped Crusaders.
Batman & Robin has a lot to answer for. Almost 20 years after its release, Joel Schumacher's brightly-coloured art nouveau confection is widely acknowledge as the nadir of the cinematic Bat-canon, even though that canon has very recently incorporated the DC Extended Universe entries, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and the Academy Award-winning* Suicide Squad.
But two decades on, it sometimes feels like the films have wound up going too far the other way. Warner Bros rightly ran in the opposite direction with the Dark Knight trilogy, which began eight years later with Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins. However, they haven't replicated the success of those films by doubling down on...

Is it possible that every movie would be better with Legos? Suicide Squad, for sure. And, of course, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. How do I know? Because The Lego Batman Movie, animated with love and lunacy, is the funniest Caped Crusader movie ever. Will Arnett may have found the role of his career voicing the growly Dark Knight as a delusional, ego-centric freak willing and eager to mine laughs out of his own psychosis, Hollywood's plastic soul and every Bruce-Wayne/Batman from Adam West to Ben Affleck.

Three years after emerging as the break-out character of the break-out hit The Lego Movie, the egotistical, comically brooding, rap-freestyling Lego iteration of Batman now has his own spin-off film. The Lego Batman Movie continues the stylistic precedent set by the first film, taking off from 0 to 100 at the first frame and barely slowing down throughout its runtime. Jokes are set up, given a punchline, and cut away from within the space of a second. (Example: A cat is toasted by lava, then cries out “I’m okay!”) The action is hummingbird-rapid, the characters moving barely south of too fast to see. The camera jets through cityscapes crammed with details that will only be possible to appreciate via freeze frame at home — a theater viewer can discern select Easter eggs almost subliminally.

I was already a diehard comic book fan and couldn’t contain my excitement at seeing the heroes and villains come off the four-color pages and onto our then-new color TV. I was very excited and had no clue just how campy it was. That came later as the reruns began on Wpix and throughout the 1970s.
The Batman phenomenon has proven incredibly influential on several generations of comic book fans, professional writers, artists, and animators, and beyond. Thankfully, whatever legal entanglements there were between Greenway Productions, 20th Century Fox, and Warner Bros got ironed out, allowing a new generation of fans to glory in what is now known as Batman ’66. The latest offering is the direct-to-dvd animated feature Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, starring the voices of Adam West,...

Sneak Peek DC Comics "Batgirl and the Birds Of Prey", available October 12, 2016, written by Julie Benson, Shawna Benson and illustrated by Claire Roe, with covers by Yanick Paquette and Karmome Shirahama:
"...the dangerous new 'Oracle' is finding that 'Gotham' mobs aren't up to the task of keeping the 'Birds of Prey' off the scent.
"So they send in the 'Snakes', including 'Copperhead', 'The Asp', 'Cottonmouth' and 'Lady Viper' are the most venomous foes the Birds have ever faced..."
Meanwhile Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive") continues to push Warners to let him direct a 'Batgirl' solo film.
"You know the one I want to do? I want to make 'Batgirl'," said Refn. "Let's get Warners working on it."
"...it would probably be great fun.
"I very much enjoy my freedom creatively, but I also would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money.

I love the 1966 series Batman with Adam West and Burt Ward. It was just such an incredibly entertaining and campy show. I especially enjoyed the look of it. The costumes and the sets had just such a fun design to them.
Today we've got some awesome original production art to share with you from the series created by A. Leslie Thomas, who was a Hollywood art director who worked on 1950s horror films such as I was a Teenage Werewolf and Blood of Dracula.
The art recently resurfaced on Batgirl Bat-Trap, and it gives us a cool behind-the-scenes look at the work that went into creating this colorful world of Batman in the 60s. As you'll see, the artwork is stunning!

Awhile back we reported that the 60's Batman would be coming back in an animated feature called Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders. Today, we show you a commercial for the feature, which will be in stores October 11th. Batman will, of course, be voiced by Adam West, Burt Ward as Robin, and Julie Newmar as Batgirl! Judging by how hilarious this commercial is the feature should be a good time! Can't wait to see it. ...

Tarzan, Space Sentinels, The New Adventures Of Batman, Flash Gordon, Bravestarr and more, as we salute Filmation...
For a child of the 1970s and 80s, nothing readied you for a half hour of quality entertainment quite like the Filmation logo. Immortalised by their phenomenal success with He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe, and its spin off She-Ra: Princess Of Power, Filmation produced some of the most fondly remembered animated series to grace the small screen.
Over a period of 26 years - in tandem with classic Doctor Who funnily enough - the company's writers, artists and producers delivered a staggering amount of programming. While naysayers point to Filmation's penchant for reusing a stockpile of rotoscoped body movements, or the heavy handedness of its moralising and educational content - children on the other hand, thrilled to an irresistible mixture of action, adventure and superhuman heroes.

So, you want to start reading Batman but are completely lost due to the character being around for over seventy-five years, and hundreds of issues and iterations on the character.
Where do you start? What If you only like some of the movie versions? Or maybe the video games?
What’s the New 52? What’s Rebirth?
It can be daunting if you are completely new to the world of comic books or maybe a returning fan that’s been away for a long time. While hardcore fans have probably stuck around for all the various Bat books, most maybe only keep up via Wiki or maybe random postings on sites like Cbr or IGN. Well, fear not, as I will be doing my best to give some insight on iconic Batman storylines essential to the character, along with a brief update on the current state of the character!

With the Joker back on the big screen in Suicide Squad, we celebrate the craziest plans of the Clown Prince of Crime...
He's the greatest villain of them all. He's the evil that tests Batman and makes the hero better. He's an uncontrollable force of chaos, more akin to a hurricane than a criminal, who strikes without warning. He believes that life is a chaotic farce and everything exists as part of a twisted game between him and Batman. He is the star of comics, television, cartoons, and film. He's the Joker, one of the most enduring symbols of evil in the last century.
The Joker is no match for Batman physically, so when he puts one over on the Dark Knight, when he 'gets' him, it has to be a masterpiece of chaos and violence. These are just some of the greatest moments where the Joker...

Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's Batman: The Killing Joke has been the subject of controversy since its 1988 debut and not surprisingly, its animated counterpart has exacerbated the issue by adding new layers to the story. Before and after the debut screening of the film at San Diego Comic-Con fans reacted and writer Brian Azzarello, director Sam Liu, and producer Bruce Timm addressed the concerns. Fans of the classic story were excited to see it adapted, especially because the R-rated animated feature reunited the voice talents of actors Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as Joker, but even some of them were shocked to see the additions to the tale. Spoilers to follow for The Killing Joke animated film (and the graphic novel of course). I've yet to see the new film but according to reports, a prologue was added to give Barbara Gordon's Batgirl more story. Batgirl...

Critics aren't quite sure what to make of Nicholas Winding Refn’s new film The Neon Demon, but it's safe to say he's got vision. And now he's apparently turned his sights to the DC Comics' character Batgirl. Could he make a live-action film happen? The Danish director (who also did Bronson, Only God Forgives, and Drive) was speaking to Business Insider to promote The Neon Demon, which stars Elle Fanning, and spoke about how he once wanted to tackle DC's biggest female superhero: But this isn't the first time the Danish filmmaker has wanted to make a movie with a strong female lead. After the release of his popular 2011 thriller "Drive," Refn said he really wanted to make a Wonder Woman movie. That's not going to happen quite yet. When Gal Gadot stars as the superhero in her standalone movie, out in the summer of 2017, Patty Jenkins ("Monster") will have the reins.

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Batman TV show (1966-68) starring Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman and his teen partner Robin the Boy Wonder. The show was a huge hit when first released and still has a loyal following today. The show was a clever satire, not only on super heroes but also on 1960s pop-culture in general. Cinelinx celebrates ABC’s Batman at 50.
In January of 1996, a mid-season replacement show debuted on ABC and became an unexpected hit. It was originally planned to be produced for the fall ’66 season but it was moved up to January. ABC’s Batman was part of its 1966 “second wave” programming, being one of 4 shows that debuted during the mid-season. (Along with The Double Life of Henry Phyfe, Blue Light and The Baron.) Yvonne Craig, best known for playing Batgirl in the 1960s’ Batman television series, passed away Monday at her home in California after a long battle with cancer. Reportedly, Craig had been suffering from breast cancer, which had recently spread to her liver. She was 78. Craig joined the cast of Batman, which premiered in 1966, in its third season, portraying the character of Batgirl (and her alter ego, librarian Barbara Gordon) in all 26 episodes of Season 3. In the series, Craig’s Barbara never knew Batman and Robin’s true identities, and hers also remained unknown to them, with Alfred being the only aware that Barbara was actually Batgirl. In addition to her iconic role on Batman, Craig’s other television credits include notable guest appearances on Love, American Style, Star Trek, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Many Lives of Dobie Gillis, The Mod Squad, Starksy and Hutch, and Fantasy Island.
