Saturday Night Live, Season 40, Episode 18, “Taraji P. Henson/Mumford & Sons”
Aired April 11, 2015 at 11:30 pm Et on NBC (East coast version watched for review)
The Host: Taraji P. Henson is that elusive creature known as the “black character actress.” Yes, many have thought them extinct but, as pointed out by the wonderful podcast Denzel Washington is the Greatest Actor of All Time Period, the working black actress is something to be cherished. Henson has been working steadily since the late 90s, but thanks to her role as Cookie on Empire, she has appeared to have, per her monologue, “made it.” Henson blends in well with the cast and commits to the loony worlds the show has her inhabit. The best sketches of the night, however, are the ones that don’t have her play straight woman or second banana. This is most prominent is the obligatory Empire sketch, where Cookie...

After a slow start to 2015 (anniversary special excluded), the last two weeks of “Saturday Night Live” have been a return to form. Both the Dwayne Johnson and Michael Keaton episodes were excellent, now the show has the chance to complete the trifecta with Taraji P. Henson as host. There’s bound to be at least one “Empire”-centric sketch tonight (probably involving musical guest Mumford & Sons, because why not), but personally? I’m hoping Taran Killam gets to bust out his amazing Brad Pitt impression opposite Henson in a parody of “The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button.” (Those banking on a “Person Of Interest" parody might be disappointed.) Still, there’s far more than parodies planned tonight, and as per usual, I’ll be covering them in liveblog form. Follow along starting at 11:30 pm Est, and leave your comments throughout the show as I grade each segment in real time.

Saturday Night Live, Season 40, Episode 5, “Chris Rock/Prince”
Aired November 1, 2014 at 11:30 pm Et on NBC (East coast version watched for review)
It’s a shame when the best segment of any given episode of SNL is the musical guest. This tends to occur in an episode with mediocre sketches and a lack of cohesion and identity, all of which makes it really hard to soldier on until commercials, when one can justify looking at tumblr or updating a watchlist on Letterboxd. This week’s episode is full of this kind of half-backed material, but luckily we were guaranteed one highlight, which did not disappoint, because…
Musical Guest: Prince!!! Man, his performance is so so so good. When it was announced last week that Prince would not play the usual two sets that an SNL musical guest does, opting instead to play a single eight-minute long jam, expectations were somehow...

Much like Sarah Silverman, Chris Rock did not have the most illustrious career at “Saturday Night Live.” But much like Silverman, Rock is returning to host with a post-“SNL” resumé that is extremely impressive. It will be fascinating to see how much of Rock’s tumultuous time at the show is explicitly addressed, and how much the show’s current cast composition feeds into the narrative of tonight’s episode. The program has taken great strides over the past year to combat outcries following its hiring of six Caucasian cast members two summers ago. And now, the show boasts five African-American cast members, by far the most at one time in its history. Does that automatically make the show better? Of course not. But it sure as hell makes the show more reflective of the culture it’s designed to satire on a weekly basis. The show’s work isn’t done,...

Tired of calling your kids into the room every time a dragon shows up on Game of Thrones? Then get excited for How to Train Your Dragon 2 (a.k.a. How 2 Train Your Dragon Too). The trailer is a bit confusing, but it appears that there is a bad guy who wants to disrupt the peace between dragons and vikings, and it's up to Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and his dragon to save the day. Also, he meets his mom (Cate Blanchett!?!?), who apparently is running a hippie dragon commune. The film is scheduled for a March 26 release. Watch out, Easter Bunny, you have some competition for kids' attention, and they can breathe fire and fly — you just carry eggs in a basket.

The Kansas birther hearing not only brought pubic scrutiny to an obscure state agency, but also put the state in the crosshairs of some celebrities.
Several celebrities took to Twitter to weigh in on the decision of the state objections board to weigh President Barack Obama's eligibility to be on Kansas' presidential ballot in the wake of a challenge by a resident of Manhattan, Kan. The board voted unanimously Monday -- during a hearing dominated by birther queen Orly Taitz -- to drop the case after Joe Montgomery withdrew his objection.
Cher led off the fight on Friday when she posted several tweets highly critical of Kansas Republicans, including one calling them "beneath slime." The objections board is composed of three Republicans -- Secretary of State Kris Kobach, Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer and Attorney General Derek Schmidt. The three voted unanimously on Thursday to delay a decision on Montgomery's...
