A Video Game to end all Video Games...
JohnnyJohnHildegaard28 April 1999
This Zelda has enchanted our minds with whimsy and fantasy. The lush detail and the riveting story makes it so powerful, so righteous, you'd be saying good-bye to reality within a few minutes. The emotions there had a real touch and added atmosphere to the game. It's like something we'd love to see in a theatre. This is what happened with Titanic, the movie monopolized the movie box office, while Zelda monopolized the video game industry. This is truly the best game of all time... For now. Because later we'll see a better Zelda, and we'll hopefully experience the power and beauty of a new fantasy world.

A Legend that will never die
shadow-545 March 1999
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the most fantastic game ever created in history. The storyline captures our attention and emotions. Link, Zelda, Malon, Saria, Darunia and everyone else are almost real and amazing. Nintendo did its greatest job ever! The graphics and land of Hyrule are breathtaking. The song is something I've never expected to hear. It's fantastic, it's extremely dramatic, especially the opera tunes that play when we witness the Creation of Hyrule or prepare to receive a Medallion at the Chamber of the Sages. The Ocarina is the best tool of the game. I love to play it, especially the songs we learn through Sheik. No game, not even Super Mario 64, not even Goldeneye, not even Jedi Knight, not even the original Legends of Zelda (A Link to the Past-1991, The Legend of Zelda-1986) will ever be able to overcome a game that has become a legend. It's the greatest creation in history. Nintendo will never be surpassed by Sega or Sony. It's the BEST!!!

The quest for peace and prosperity in the magical land of Hyrule.
roclad600025 February 2000
This game, created by the incredible Shigeru Miyamoto, is by far and away the best game I have ever played. It provokes emotions and thoughts that many films totally fail to inspire. The game, as well as being mentally challenging, is physicaly difficult as well, with much practise needed to perfect the moves and complete the tasks necessary to finish the game.

The story follows Link, a young Kokori boy who recently has been having terrible nightmares. The Kokori folk are the people of the Kokori forest, a giant woodland area in this magical land. All of the Kokori folk retain their youthfulness. No matter when they are born, they always stay childlike. Each member of the Kokori people has his or her own guardian fairy to help them through their life struggles. Link however does not have a fairy and never has done. Then one day Link is visited by a fairy who tells him to visit the great Deku tree who is a giant tree possessed by the spirit of the wood who serves as the father of all the Kokori. The Deku tree knows of the nightmares and predicted them long ago. He reveals to Link that he is going to grow up as a hero and save Hyrule. He also reveals that Link is not actually a Kokori boy, he is in fact a Hyrulien (from the town of Hyrule) and that is why he never had a fairy.

After having left the forest Link goes to Hyrule town with his new found friend and guardian fairy called Navi, then on to Hyrule castle to meet princess Zelda as prophecised by the Deku tree. She tells him that she has been having the nightmares as well and she also a suspicion that a strange man who works for her father (the king) will try to overthrow the peaceful land of Hyrule and rule as a terrible dictator. And so the giant quest begins, (for it is truly giant) so great in fact that you mature to an adult before it ends. That however is for you to find out about. I do suggest that you play this game if you have an N64 and if you dont have one, I suggest that you buy one to play it. It has changed my life in more ways than on. My imagination took me to places I could never dream of before after I finished this game. I found it wholly satisfying and thought provoking also. If I could use four words to describe this game they would be: epic, enchanting, magical, and emotional. It is not a game but an experience.

Wow.
ajnrules31 July 2001
A little while ago, I gave this game a bad review. Boy was I wrong at the time, and now I stand corrected. As quality goes, this is the BEST game I have ever played! There are still a few complaints, but other games have even more.

First of all, the graphics aren't the best out there. The characters look better than in many other games, but backgrounds still don't match up to Super Mario 64. But at least you can go there this time. There are no voices except Navi's annoying "Hey!", but that's a minor complaint. And finally, the biggest flaw is that you can't fight bosses anymore, which is a big pity. That means the only thing you can do after beating this game is to start another file over.

But now that we're done with the rants, let's get to the good stuff.

TLoZ: OoT has the biggest 3D world I have ever seen! They've got a giant volcano, a huge lake, a desert, a forest etc. And each place is filled with villains and people to interact with.

And each of the 8 dungeons Link must play through are nicely designed with intricate puzzles and wonderful music. In fact, the entire game has nice music. Kudos to Koji Kondo there.

The control system takes some getting used to, but once you get used to it, you'll find out it works very well. Some people complain about the lack of an auto-jump, but I find that it works quite well. The Z-targeting system is a good way to fight your enemies. It adds realism to your fights.

This game is also long. It would have taken me over 100 hours to beat if I didn't have a cheat sheet. Overall, in my opinion, as far as quality goes, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time snatches the title of best game away from Soul Calibur, both of which were given 10s by more critics than any other games.

Still the Best Game Ever (Check out the post date)
Spartan66621 February 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I would just like to say that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, to me, is still better than any other game. Even after the Halo Series, the Wind Waker, and all of these new GCN, PS2 and XBox games, The Legend of Zelda still reigns superior. It's plot dwarfs that of most movies, and thrilled me more than anything I'd ever seen. And though I bought the game in 1998, I'm still having extreme fun with it. I'm hardcore. I gotta find all the Pieces the Heart, all the Gold Skulltulas (Done) and all these other special features.

Also, note that all those old Triforce rumors are false. You CANNOT get the Triforce. If you could, I would've found it by now.

I defeated the final boss more than a thousand times. The great beast, Ganon. Ganondorf either scared me or thrilled me. I'm still attempting to figure that one out. But there is no word in any tongue to describe what I felt fighting Ganon. Exhilaration... Excitement... a strange, magical feeling.

The Triforce is an amazing thing. All of it's bearers, Link, Zelda and Ganondorf, are the things I hold most dear in my life.

Anyone who has played the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time knows this... Link could lop the Master Chief's head in a quarter of a second.

After almost 10 Years it remains the greatest game of all time
roddickrocker2116 July 2007
Although I'm not sure why they show video games on the iMovie Database, I still feel inclined to review this game.

It's been almost ten years since this masterpiece was released on the N64 (which I was still playing 2005, I didn't have a Gamecube and my 360 had broken too many times), and no game has managed to beat its remarkable storyline, its great gameplay, and its adventurous feel.

There are many parts of this game which make it the greatest game in the world, but I only want to touch on a few. First off, this game has amazing graphics for its time, and each object was quite detailed compared to other games of the mid-90's. Another aspect of the game which adds to its superiority is the huge landscape and available areas to explore. There are numerous side quests which provide the player with lots of fun even after the game has been completed. There are many villages and towns to traverse, and Hyrule Field is immense and full of secret locations and hidden items (keep in mind that I'm not comparing this to Twilight Princess, which is much more immense).

I could spend hours talking about the great cutscenes and fun parts of the game, but since this game is classic and you can find a much more in depth review on many a game info site, I'll end the comment here. If you have a Wii, you MUST purchase this from the Virtual Console!

The perfect gaming experience.
baz_trinity7 October 2006
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is by far, the greatest gaming experience on ANY format. The game is flawless in its delivery and is as close to perfection that you can get. In fact I pity ANY game that tries to capture the magic that Ocarina so exceptionally did, as it is impossible. It takes a gamers dream and recreates it to the point of being called a "Masterpiece". Impossible to criticize, impossible to dislike, this game has everything.

The plot is as "fantasy-warrior" as you can get, as it tells the dark story of a young boy that is in a forest to which he doesn't belong. A boy that is different to his fellow peers and has a need for adventure. Asked by a mysterious fairy named "Navi", LINK soon starts a magical adventure that see's a dark lord "Ganondorf" slowly destroying Hyrule. Through the help of his time travelling instrument, the Ocarina of Time, he must travel from child to adult in order to stop what Ganondorf is planning. The story is perfect, a flawless plot that has in it the potential to capture everything a fantasy-obsessed human needs, and boy does it deliver.

Starting with the graphics, well, in short, they are AMAZING. Keeping in mind this game is 8 years old, the graphics still stand up to any game out today. The breathtaking scenery of hyrule is almost POWERFUL in its emotion. Riding your horse through the field of Hyrule, you feel incredible; Watching the sunset go down at Lake Hylia, you feel spellbound and gazing at the beautifully detailed towns makes you FEEL like you're living in the town of Kakoriko. The literally jaw-dropping scale of the land you explore, and the monsters you slay, never ceases to leave you holding your breath. The graphics are beautiful and polished to say the least, and not "Just for an N64 game", but for any video game.

The combat system, action AND the weapons and items you collect are anything you'd ever want, and more. You can find LOADS of ways to kill the 100's of different beasts and creatures courtesy of the 15 + weapons you can collect. Swords, Bow and Arrow, Boomerang, Hookshot, Megaton Hammer, Bombs, slingshot etc. are just a few of the weapons on offer. The combat system is, and I know I use this word a lot when describing OOT, perfect. You literally just go in there and find whatever way you can to kill whatever is attacking you. The action is intense, epic and dramatic. Whether it's running in and out of the way of a giant fire breathing dragon, or hacking at a phantom that comes rapidly out of one of many paintings, you'll be kept on your toes at all times.

But it's not all non-stop action, Ocarina of Time requires you to think a whole lot. The dungeons are literally packed with brain-bending puzzles that needs complete focus to figure them out.

The music is beautiful and enchanting, absolutely perfect for the gaming experience that it provides. Its dark and mystical, the scores that are created are some of the best around, and is made even better by your own personal Ocarina that you can play. The music is deep and emotional and provides hugely towards the emotion you feel towards the game. For example, while strolling through the town of Kakoriko and Lon Lon Ranch, you feel happy and relaxed, as the music is lazy and slightly upbeat. Through Hyrule field you feel intense and ready for action, as the music is fast and...well... "Warrior"-Like! When your in dungeons and bosses however, the music is dark and slightly disturbing in places, suiting perfectly the intensity and tension that is flowing through the game. The scores written on the ocarina are epic and dramatic and full of emotion and atmosphere, that is both moving and breath-taking.

But the game isn't only adventure, you can get yourself involved in a massive amount of fun and enjoyable activities. Horse Riding for example, is great. There is nothing better than experiencing the beautiful scenery on horseback. You can take part in many weapon-related games in towns, such as archery games, slingshot games and bombchu games and a big part of the game that will see you saying goodbye to a big chunk of your life is surprisingly, fishing in Lake Hylia. It sees you fishing in a relaxing, lazy environment as you stand there with a rod and try to catch a big fish. A nice break from the action that provides challenges in its own right. You can also take part in sub-missions, such as selling masks to a variety of different people, getting such weapons as the BigGoron Sword that is not needed in the main adventure (But is VERY handy) and you can even get your own cow.

The game has about 100 hours of gameplay, the main adventure taking about 40 hours and the rest of the game taking about 60, which you wouldn't find in games today. This game requires you to get approximately 70 pieces of heart, around 100 golden skulltula's, 4 bottles, 8 special poes, large wallet, full amount of arrows, bombs, deku seeds, bomchu's AND deku nuts, deku sticks, light, ice and fire arrows, about 20 different weapons, 3 different types of sword, shield, shoes and tunics, 2 types of gauntlets, 2 different ocarinas, around 6 hidden fairies that will provide a variety of different upgrades including 3 magical god powers (Dins fire, Nayrus Love and Fayroras Wind), double defense and the power to lift giant triforce blocks, a variety of different sword techniques and finally around ten different ocarina tunes. And you know what? I probably forgot a few things.

As long a review as this is, it doesn't do justice to this monumental, legendary gaming experience. This is as close to a masterpiece as you can get.

A Masterpiece. The Greatest Game In Existence
evehot123423 April 2009
I awoke on a warm December morning, 1998, and there lying on my desk was a golden rectangular box. Even though I was excited, I had know idea what I was inserting into my Nintendo 64. From that morning my view of video games had changed. Playing that game was like observing a piece of art.

Every aspect in the game is incredible, from the new visually stunning 3-D concept to the adventures that Link must surpass.

The Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time in my opinion is the greatest game ever, I believe that even in the many years to come of video gaming, this Masterpiece could not be toppled.

Best Video-Game Ever
Chrmani27 August 2002
Never has a game captivated and engulfed me in its world so much as Ocarina of Time did.Every little detail is perfect from the huge dungeons which are contained in a massive world where every one in it can be interacted with. The only game i have been upset at completing, it left an unbearable hole in my life when i had finished it. You may think this is over the top slightly, but wait to you play it, and finish it. Its a masterpiece sculpted by a genius, sublime.

Too good to be true?
Reaper Man3 March 2000
When Ocarina of time finally arrived, i daren't play it. For nigh on three years I had been waiting for it, searching for screenshots in every magazine, scouring previews for information, stopping strangers in the street and screaming at them "Why God why!" and yet here it was, in my N64, ready to be fired up. I turned the power on and began... And got stuck! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! I had waited for so long that I was trying too hard. Looking for clues that weren't there, swinging wildly at invisible monsters. When I had calmed down (after a few whiskeys) the fun began. Yeah, the plot is corny. Yeah, it's a bit childish. BUT GODDAMNIT, it`s fun. The game flows along, never glitching, constantly wowing you with original ideas and fantastic graphics. Combat is intuitive, as you backflip and swipe at, er, things. NEVER has a game lasted me so long as Ocarina of Time (apart from Gran Turismo), and never has a game been so relaxing to play. If Zelda were a cheese, it would be cheddar. No, wait, that`s a rubbish analogy. Oh well. Believe the hype and BUY IT.

The greatest single player game ever!
Overlord-424 June 2000
Who could say this is a bad game? (except for the people in stores playing it and not knowing what to do!) I luve this game heaps, I always play it again, it's big, beautiful and a great storyline. Everything about the game is good, except it is easy, the only boss that is hard is the one in the Shadow Temple, and the producers made it like you have low to none chance of dying because of the fairies, the big fairy outside Ganon's castle and Nayru's Love. The should'nt have put Nayru's Love. Anyway, only game I don't mind playing again and again, only game that truly means adventure.

Truly a work of art beyond any comparison.
RanmaInuyashafan17 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This video game is absolutely incredible beyond belief. I own the N64 version (In contrast with the Gamecube version) and find it enjoyable, yet challenging but not to the extent where you would give up right there and then. The graphics are visually stunning (For an N64 game anyway) and it is, for an RPG, virtually playable and beatable if you truly use your mind and all your weapons at hand. (Remember: Everything you own in this game has a purpose.)You will then prosper and own the title of the legendary Hero of Time and save the land of Hyrule from eternal doom and destruction and save the princess. Sounds like some kind of Dungeons and Dragons thing huh? No way. It's so, so much better. Not only the hardest of all of Nintendo's platformers and RPG's, but the best all around!

Overrated but good
OrdinaryPerson6923 December 2023
I know this is one of the most praised Zelda games along with Breath of the Wild & Tears of the Kingdom. However, I don't think this game deserves to be in the same spot as those two.

"Waa waa this guy has a recency bias" is what you're probably saying to yourself but allow me to prove you wrong. I played through Final Fantasy 7 prior to this and I loved it.

But yeah, this game is way to linear and generic for this game to be in my best list.

Props where it's due though, there are elements which I really liked one being the final boss while easy, it more than made up for it in its atmosphere.

Albeit I was in my dad's nuts when this game was released so I didn't have the luxury to grow up with N64 games but my point still stands.

I know this is a hot take and y'all are gonna mark this as not-helpful but I just wanted to get my point across.

A Mild Disappointment
ctvd31 March 2000
Zelda 64 by no means is the best game ever made. But for N64 it probably is. What disappointed me the most and for the old die hard Zelda fans is that the game has changed from RPG to RPG/Adventure which is not the same. But fortunately this is one of the best adventure games ever with very active gameplay the graphics are amazing but thats probably why everybody thinks is the best just because of the graphics are so amazing which they are but when you have played games like Final Fantasy VII and VIII and Xenogears and a whole lot more the story here doesnt seem magical and is to short not that its easy but for a game like this an epic always last long. But if you own a N64 you will probably enjoy this game. Its a good game but still feels like a let down.

The best game invented and the best game I've played!!!
Mariomac27 January 1999
There are classic books, classic movies, classic TV shows, classic board games and classic video games. This one is too new to be a classic game, but so far, it is the most innovative, indepth and well structured game in history!! Never before have I played a game with such dramatic quality that you can actually feel for a video game character, feel his pain and his emotions! There have been other Zelda games, but with the way technology is improving rapidly you can't help but say that this is the best of them. I may only be fifteen, but I have had enough experience to tell the good from the crappy. I know that movies like Saving Private Ryan are meant to touch the human spirit and make you feel like you are right in the middle of the times of War. I have seen it and I was truly touched by its ability to bring such realistic events right to the screens of the world. I have two truly gifted heroes, one is Steven Spielberg and the other is Shigeru Miyamoto. This game touched my soul. Hell, it even touched my Mum's soul up to the level where she actually thought that it was a good game! Video Games are becoming more like movies and one day they'll all have people like Spielberg working for them. This game is the start of all that and will definitely become a classic!

The "Titanic" of the Video-Game Industry
Floyd-2023 January 1999
The most anticipated game of all time has finally been released after more than two years of wait and it really was worth the wait to finally be able to play this masterpiece from the first screen to the last. It has all the genius of Shigeru Miyamoto and the best of all the "Legend of Zelda" games put together in the greatest game of all time. An Action/RPG adventure every true player would've dreamed of. It's a must for any owner or future owner of the Nintendo 64. It really is the "Titanic" of the Video-Game Industry.

The best game I have ever played.
gullcrap_slithroat1 September 2006
This game is absolutely flawless, full stop. There is a lot to do, like being a merchant, fisherman, saviour of the world, and collector. This is a pretty hard game, so don't expect to have completed it all a week after purchase. Because of this game, Nintendo are my favourite game company, Microsoft's XBox coming a close second.

I have found that this is hard to get for the N64, but I have found plenty of the special edition Wind Wakers, which have Ocarina of Time in the box as well.

If you still have an N64 and have found this game cheap, get it! 10/10

I only wish that Majora's Mask was like this, it was good but not great.

The Best Video Game That I Have Ever Played
BSHBen23 July 2005
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is quite possibly the best video game ever made. The environments, particularly Hyrule Field, are huge and very detailed. Perhaps the best part about Ocarina of Time is the incredibly long game play. The main game is exciting and their is an almost uncountable number of side-quests. You can try to find all 100 Gold Sculltulas, collect all the pieces of heart, acquire the Biggoron's Sword, complete the Training area for the ice arrow, catch the 20-pounder fish, or own all four empty bottles. Ocarina of Time's N64 sequel, Majora's Mask, is also a great game, although Ocarina of Time is a bit better.

The Best Video Game Ever Created!!!
darkzelda2 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I've been video-gamer since I remember, even now I still enjoy video games but when I think of this game I can't even think of joy it's any other sensation beyond. It's almost a miracle to see such a perfection in a screen, no matter how many times you finish the game, it's always magical to see it before you. A game like this won't sadly ever be created again.

When you start the game for the first time, you feel from that point that this game is going to be fantastic. The story is simple amazing, magical and original, and it's so huge that you have unlimited hours of sitting before the N64 console.

In General is the best thing I've ever since on a screen.

The best game from the Zelda series
ruffinelli_ro4 April 2009
This is arguably the best game ever made. It has an excellent game-play, awesome story, tons of bad guys, a really big world and a princess. What more can you expect? Well I didn't expect much at first. Since this game is a bit old, I thought it wouldn't be as good as other great games I have played by the time. It wouldn't be innovating or really fun. I was incredibly wrong.

I was instantly dragged in within 5 minutes of playing. The only thing on my mind was this game (well that was a bit exaggerated). It takes a while to get used to the game-play but once you get the handle of it, you will notice that it works great. The graphics are not that good but still enjoyable. The sound is really great on the other hand. But There is something more that makes this game a masterpiece. I don't what it is yet, perhaps is the characters development, the story, the many items and weapons that you can use, the incredible dungeons or it is the sum of all of the above plus other details.

One might never answer that question, but I can assure you, you will love this game at least. It has everything in the action/adventure genre. It might not disappoint anyone. It is definitely in the top 10 games of all times.

Flawless.
MattyTheTurner17 April 2008
In every aspect possible, through graphical design, audio masterpieces, engrossing game-play, and the new path it paved for games to come, the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time can be described as nothing less than the perfect video game experience. Absolutely flawless.

From the minute you step out into the fields of Hyrule, and see the sun actually setting before your very eyes as you traverse a fully functional 3D world, you know that Ocarina of Time will have you hooked for life. In my many years of gaming experience, I have never found a game that can top this.

If you don't want to play this game, you shouldn't deserve a Nintendo 64.

The best there is
Hagoth24 April 1999
There was a time when movies were considerd lower class entertainment. Back then movies showed vary little variation in plot and were only a novelty. The same can be said for video games today. This game is a step to the day when perhaps video games will be given more respect. The game plays like a movie, you actually feel for Link in his quest to save Hyrule. The graphics are stunning, the gameplay is excellent and it has the quality video games are supposed to have: fun. This game is not just mindless violence like too many other games are these days. Enough can not be said about this game. Shigeru Miyamoto made another winner. If you own a Nintendo 64 buy this.
