For five years, SAG-AFTRA member and vice president Janice Pendarvis worked seven days a week at three different jobs.
“That’s a lot of work. But I do it willingly and I do it with love because this is what I do, and I love what I do. So that’s why I’m here,” Pendarvis told TheWrap while picketing outside of 30 Rockefeller on Tuesday.
Pendarvis, who is SAG-AFTRA’s national vice president for recording artists and singers as well as a chair of the National Singers Committee, explained she was striking for her union members, all union members and non-union people. “It has got to stop, this tyranny of the rich. We don’t mind if you’re rich. I don’t want a yacht. I’m happy with what I have. But can I have that?” Pendarvis said.

Peppermint wants back on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” She famously was runner-up in Season 9 when Sasha Velour took the crown after her iconic rose petal-filled finale lip sync.
“I would love to go on ‘All Stars,’” Peppermint tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. She was asked to compete in 2018 but was already booked for the Go-Go’s Broadway musical, “Head Over Heels.” “I will happily go onto the show if they invite me,” Peppermint says. “It is quite expensive and quite an investment, but I do think it could be worth it.”
Peppermint will next be seen in “A Transparent Musical,” opening May 23 at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. She plays Davina, a role originated on the “Transparent” television series by Alexandra Billings. Peppermint recalls having “two-person watch parties” with her music producer when the series first premiered on Amazon in 2014.

“What I find fun about these characters is how to make them human and as real as possible,” explains Bonnie Milligan. The actress is currently starring in the Broadway transfer of “Kimberly Akimbo” as Aunt Debra, a role she originated Off-Broadway to much acclaim. While Milligan displays her signature brand of comedy in the role, she is quick to point out that Debra is more than just a zany criminal with killer vocals. The performer is keen to bring out the complex intermingling of love and grief which define the character, and the musical as a whole. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
In this new musical from David Lindsay-Abaire and Jeanine Tesori, Milligan’s Debra arrives at her niece Kimberly’s (Victoria Clark) doorstep with her latest (and highly illegal) money making scheme. Kimberly, a 16 year old girl who appears closer to 70 thanks to a rare genetic disorder, is...

This article contains spoiler for Orphan Black.
Felix Dawkins is definitely a character, and human clone Sarah’s foster brother brings some unexpected humor to the tension and trauma of Orphan Black. However, there is someone unwaveringly loyal and determined beneath the eyeliner and comic relief.
Orphan Black premiered a decade ago today. Throughout five seasons, it becomes evident there is more to Felix, brilliantly played by Jordan Gavaris, than sequins and witty comebacks. He is at Sarah’s side even when they have to figure out how to hide a dead body. He’s allergic to suburbia, but still ventures to this alien realm when Alison needs him. He willingly turns his loft into a makeshift hotel for the sestras. He may have no power next to Rachel, but still manages to strike fear right through her left eye socket.
Whether or not his eyeliner is on point, these...

In their latest edition of “First Drafts of Rock,” Kevin Bacon and Jimmy Fallon have taken on the Rolling Stones’ 1966 hit “Paint It, Black.” In the clip, filmed for The Tonight Show, Bacon embodies Mick Jagger while Fallon becomes Keith Richards.
In their “first draft” of the rock song, the pair croon, “I go to Michaels/ And I ask, ‘Where is the paint?’/ They tell me, ‘Aisle 6’/ That’s where they keep the paint.” Later, the lyrics get even more meta: “I see a can of paint/I want to paint the paint.

Shania Twain remembers hearing Abba at 12 years old, even mentioning her love for Mamma Mia. The “That Don’t Impress Me Much” singer even has her sights set on a jukebox musical, saying there’s “an interest” in creating a stage adaptation of her country-pop music.

Chromeo are back: The electro-funk duo of David “Dave 1” Macklovitch and Patrick “P-Thugg” Gemayel have released a catchy new track called “Words with You.” The group are billing it as their first official single since their last studio album, 2018’s Head Over Heels.
Featuring Chromeo’s signature combination of disco and funk, “Words with You” is just as smooth as it is catchy thanks to a grooving bassline and irresistible synths. However, the lyrics are actually about a breakdown in communication within a relationship. “A simple word called trust,” Dave 1 sings. “That’s between the two of us/ I wouldn’t want to play with that.” Stream the track below.
In a statement, Dave 1 described “Words with You” as “a mix of new and familiar.” He named the horn section and live instrumentation of drums, bass, and synths as new, with “the groove and the tone, two signature things...

If we lived in an alternate universe where Bill Nye never got his big break, relegated to shooting his lo-fi children’s show from his garage and submitting tapes to a local affiliate in hopes he’d advance to a prime Sunday morning slot, it would look something like the one Cameron Edwin (Jim Gaffigan) occupies. As his marriage is also on the brink of collapse, his midlife crisis conveniently dovetails with an old Russian rocket falling in his backyard. Edwin decides to make the most of the opportunity and attempt to fulfill his dreams of being an astronaut. An effective concoction of cosmic mystery and earnest emotion to elevate its small-scale, homespun design, Colin West’s Linoleum evolves into a nifty, heartfelt sci-drama.

A new Broadway season has started, and there are currently seven productions of musicals set to open this fall. Could we be seeing any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Below is an overview of the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative team, and the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Almost Famous” (previews begin October 3; opens November 3)
In this stage musical adaptation of Cameron Crowe’s 2000 Academy Award-winning film, William Miller is an idealistic 15-year-old aspiring music journalist. When Rolling Stone magazine hires him to go on the road with an up-and-coming band, he is thrust into the rock-and-roll circus, where his love of music, his longing for friendship, and his integrity as a writer collide.
This musical has a book written by Crowe, who also co-wrote the score with Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Tom Kitt.

Lend me your “sympathetic ears,” because history could be made when Tony Award nominations are announced on May 9. The Pulitzer Prize-winning “A Strange Loop” is bound to have a strong showing. While it’s already an impressive feat for a self-described “big, Black, queer-ass, American Broadway show” to enjoy a buzzy commercial run, that’s not the history of which I speak. I’m looking at the acting races: if “A Strange Loop’s” L Morgan Lee manages to nab a Featured Actress in a Musical nomination, she will become the first openly transgender performer to be nominated for a Tony Award.

Though the title sounds like an Sctv parody of a Bergman film, Joan Micklin Silver’s dramedy was first released in 1979 as Head Over Heels and was very obviously a romantic comedy. Since the box office was underwhelming, distributors lopped off the original’s happy ending and changed the name. Voila, a more successful film. Go figure. Riverdale Season 6 Episode 4
“I know, it read it in the comics”
For its 100th episode, Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa scripted what is easily the show’s most audacious episode. “The Jughead Paradox” had the unenviable task of wrapping up the entire “Rivervale” saga and setting the stage for the rest of the series’ sixth season — which will air when the show returns in the spring. That alone would be enough of a challenge for any writer to tackle, yet Aguirre-Sacasa ups the creative ante by having the installment also become a meta funhouse mirror reflection of itself by reinserting long-gone characters into the narrative and having characters reflect on nearly every ridiculous thing that has ever happened during the series. Oh yeah, there is also the plotline about parallel universes colliding into each other and threatening to wipe out the whole of existence unless Jughead can save the day.

Writing a book has always been a goal for Alaska Thunderfuck 5000. In fact, she’s got a rather ambitious three-step plan for herself: “The big things are the book, the movie and then the made-for-tv movie.”
The “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” winner swears to tell “the T, the whole T and nothing but the T” in her new memoir out Nov. 9, “My Name’s Yours, What’s Alaska?”
While the book brings a fair share of belly laughs, Alaska is also unafraid to face her past head-on with a candid account of her upbringing, her relationship (and public breakup) with fellow “Drag Race” winner Sharon Needles and her drag journey.
“I want to be able to talk about things in a real way, because I think that it was a way for me to learn from my past and my journey. And hopefully other people can too,” she tells Variety.

In telling the story of champion alpine ski racer Franz Klammer, one of Austria’s most revered and beloved sports heroes, director Andreas Schmied forewent the usual biopic tropes, focusing instead on a few fateful days that culminated in his victory at the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck. It was that focus that ultimately convinced Klammer to give the film, “Chasing the Line,” a thumbs up. The movie world premieres at the Zurich Film Festival, which opens Thursday.
Other attempts had been made at telling Klammer’s story on film over the years, but none had succeeded. When producer Jakob Pochlatko of Vienna-based Epo-Film approached Schmied with the project, the director embraced the opportunity.
“I grew up with Franz Klammer – everybody in Austria did,” Schmied says, stressing Klammer’s enduring popularity in the country. “I knew what a big deal Franz is.”

On March 16, 2020, Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley launched “Stars In The House” in response to what they knew would be an immediate need for funds in light of the Broadway shutdown.
Now, one year and over 375 episodes later, “Stars In The House” has raised over $715,000 for The Actors Fund, and an additional $200,000 for other charity organizations who have needed support throughout the pandemic.
“We can’t believe it has been a year! Joan Micklin Silver, who forged her own way as a female director in the 1970s and ’80s and helmed seven features including “Crossing Delancey” and “Hester Street,” died Thursday in Manhattan. She was 85.
Her daughter, Claudia Silver, told the New York Times the cause was vascular dementia.
The 1975 independent film “Hester Street” was the story of a Jewish immigrant couple in the 1890s. The low-budget black and white film, in Yiddish with English subtitles, proved a hard sell to studios, and was eventually financed by her husband, real estate developer Raphael D. Silver. It won rave reviews and earned $5 million at the box office, an impressive amount at the time. The 21-year old Carol Kane was nominated for a best actress Oscar for her role as the wife, Gitl.

Joan Micklin Silver, the director of films like “Crossing Delancy,” “Hester Street,” and “Between the Lines” died on Thursday at the age of 85, The New York Times reports. Her daughter, Claudia Silver, told the paper that the cause of death was vascular dementia. In addition to Claudia, Silver’s survivors include two other daughters, Dina and Marisa Silver; a sister, Renee; and five grandchildren. Her long-time husband, Raphael D. Silver, died at age 83 in 2013 after a skiing accident in Park City, Utah.
An indie pioneer who first got her start writing a series of educational films for companies like Encyclopedia Britannica and the Learning Corporation of America in the 1970s, Silver was long aware of the barriers that would likely prevent her from entering into the male-dominated filmmaking milieu.
And yet the Omaha native soon made her own opportunities, including writing and directing her first film, the low-budget drama 1975 “Hester Street.

Although they’ve never really been seriously considered by official voters, The Go-Go’s are your favorites for 2021 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They received 20% of the vote in our recent poll asking which snubbed band most deserves to be chosen to be inducted. Melissa Etheridge was tops in our separate poll about overlooked female artists. Look out for our poll featuring male artists soon.
The all-female group from the 1980s originally was started by Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, Elissa Bello and Margot Olavarria. Other members who would most likely receive induction would be Charlotte Caffey, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine and Paula Jean Brown. They beat out Duran Duran with 13% and The B-52’s with 11%.
At the delayed 2020 induction ceremony for the Hof, bands Depeche Mode, Doobie Brothers, Nine Inch Nails and T-Rex are finally getting their due.

At the delayed 2020 induction ceremony for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, bands Depeche Mode, Doobie Brothers, Nine Inch Nails and T-Rex are finally getting their due. Each of them waited a while to get in, so which other snubbed bands should be strongly considered for 2021? Vote in our new poll below which features 12 artists.
At the previous 2019 ceremony, voters also saw that long-overlooked bands The Cure, Def Leppard, Roxy Music and The Zombies finally got their due. With five to eight artists going in each year, bands seem to be the most populous. Male artists also have a fairly easy time getting in, but critics often complain about the lack of female artists being inducted. Our most recent poll results about female artists cried out for Melissa Etheridge to make the cut in 2021. Watch out soon when we have a poll about male artists.

Wow, where to begin with Catherine: Full Body? Originally released in Japan in February 2011 and the Us in July of the same year, in the UK we had to wait some seven months after its Us debut to enjoy the “epic-weirdness” that was Catherine. And now, years later, Nintendo’s flagship console gets its first taste of the weirdness with Catherine: Full Body – which includes the updted version of the original game, all existing add-on content from the original release of Catherine: Full Body on PS4 and Xbox One… Plus three new voice options that reference the Persona series!
Let’s get this straight, for all intents and purposes, Catherine is a sim-style game, driven by the story of Vincent a thirty-something man who drifts between his job, his friends, his local pub, The Stray Sheep, and his girlfriend Katherine (notice the subtle spelling difference). However Vincent’s life is thrown into turmoil,...

From indie studio Tacs Games and first appearing on the Wii U of all places, Factotum 90 sees you trapped in deep space after something’s collided with your ship. Main power is offline and you’re trapped. It’s lucky you have access to a terminal that allows you to take control of two walker robots as you tackle 30 decks that include engineering, laboratories and high security sectors. The robots cannot be operated at the same time so you have to alternate between them, figuring out how to use them as a team to make it through each deck. Switch between the walkers at any time and make use of switches, lifts, bombs, energy beams and teleports as you aim to restore power, reactivate the life support and solve the mystery of the collision and save the day.

The meteoric and ruinous rise to fame is more than a movie cliché; it’s a virtual guarantee for just about any artist without his or her head screwed on straight. But “The Go-Go’s” tackles the seminal all-female ’80s rock band with such honesty, openness and effervescence that it not only rises above that clichéd, almost telegraphed arc but transcends the ranks of other music documentaries to offer a story you desperately want to keep watching, even when you already know where it’s going.
It’s fascinating to think of the performers of “Our Lips Are Sealed,” “Head Over Heels” and even their earliest hit “We Got the Beat” as punk rockers, but “The Go-Go’s” reminds audiences of the band’s scrappy origins as a group of young women inspired by the Los Angeles punk scene to start their own band. Though members Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin,...

Netflix has come aboard Sir Paul McCartney’s long-gestating animated film High In The Clouds, which is based on the children’s adventure novel of the same title written by the iconic Beatles musician as well as Geoff Dunbar and Philip Ardagh. The project hails from French company Gaumont, which optioned the book back in 2012 after it had been in development since 2009.
Timothy Reckart, who earned an Oscar nomination for his 2012 animated short Head Over Heels and directed the 2017 animation film The Star, is directing High In The Clouds from a screenplay by Paddington scribe Jon Croker.
It’s a story of an imaginative teenage squirrel named Wirral who finds himself pulled into a ramshackle gang of teenage rebels who live high in the clouds after he accidentally antagonizes Gretsch the owl, the tyrannical leader (and fabulous singer!), who steals the voice of anyone who upstages her.

Created by Tate Taylor, Filthy Rich is a southern Gothic family drama in which wealth, power and religion collide – with outrageously soapy results. When the patriarch of a mega-rich Southern family, famed for creating a wildly successful Christian television network, dies in a plane crash, his wife and family are stunned to learn that he fathered three illegitimate children, all of whom are written into his will, threatening their family name and fortune. Not knowing what “Head Over Heels” was about is part of the sheer pleasure of experiencing it. I knew it had the music of The Go-Go’s – that exquisite all-female pop/rock band that exploded in the 1980s – but would it be a jukebox musical, a 1980s nostalgia or something equally unimaginative? The answer, gratefully, was no. “Head Over Heels” is adapted from a pastoral romance written in the 16th Century, modernized with sparkling hilarity, and features the best songs of The Go-Go’s in perfect context, premiering in Chicago only six months after it ended its Broadway run.

“I might be heart broke, but that don’t mean I gotta stay home,” sings Runaway June’s Naomi Cooke in the country trio’s sprightly hit single “Buy My Own Drinks,” obliterating any expectations that she might be the type to waste time crying over someone. Cooke, along with singing partners Hannah Mulholland and Jennifer Wayne (the granddaughter of the Duke himself) are bound to get some Dixie Chicks comparisons with their brand of harmony-drenched country-pop, but their debut album Blue Roses offers plenty to distinguish them from that multi-Platinum trio.
