(This was the same day that John Adams the lawyer and later second US President wrote a letter to John Jay on his appointment to the post of, as Mr Adams called it, Minister of Foreign Affairs (nowadays Secretary of State). This letter was written from Auteuil in France. On the same day Adams also wrote to Elbridge Gerry, and one Jacon read wrote to George Washington).
