As feature debuts go, director Ted Geoghegan’s 2015 ghost story We Are Still Here was a real kick in the ass: a slow-burn throwback to the work of Lucio Fulci that spent most of its running time building dread and atmosphere before exploding into outrageous gore in its go-for-broke climax. Beyond being an extremely effective haunted house movie (my favorite horror movie of that year), it was also a sad and atmospheric meditation on grief and loss—there was a genuine emotional backbone to the story, making it just as involving as it was scary.
For Mohawk, his 2017 follow-up that recently screened at Chicago’s Cinepocalypse film festival, Geoghegan has done it again, sneaking a real human story into thrilling genre fare. This time out, though, the human story is even more pronounced given its roots; Geoghegan has moved away from the supernatural horror of We Are Still Here and...

New York 1814, late into the War of 1812, and a Mohawk woman, Oak, and two men, Joshua and Calvin, are hunted down by a squad of American soldiers hell-bent on revenge for an attack on their camp. Mohawk starts with Joshua Pinsmail, a British soldier and one of Oak’s lovers, making an impassioned plea to the leader of the Mohawk nation to drop their neutrality, take up arms and rise against the American army. Feeling the burden of the invading American forces and shame that the Mohawk would not take a side in the war, and spurred on by Pinsmail’s words Calvin Two Rivers, Oak’s other lover, goes on...

The brainchild of frequent collaborators Steven Knight and Tom Hardy, Taboo might just be the fraternal twin of the pair’s Peaky Blinders, which was just renewed for a fourth and fifth season. With parental guidance from Chips Hardy, Tom’s father, who’s also credited as a series creator, and the big name draw of executive producer Ridley Scott, one mustn’t strain themselves when searching for motivation to tune in for the premiere this coming Tuesday.
The show is set in 1814 London, in the thick of the War of 1812 between Great Britain/Canada and the “15 United States of America.” The East India Trading Company, whose tyrannical depiction in the series ignited a bit of controversy prior to the show’s release, are attempting to monopolize trading routes on both coasts of America. 2K Games and Hanger 13’s crime caper Mafia 3 has been set for release on October 7, with a new story trailer introducing Lincoln Clay, the one-man reign of terror that is poised to ruffle a few feathers in the Italian mafia.
As was teased just yesterday, Mafia 3 is set against the roaring ’60s, replete with period cars, music and old-school weaponry. There’s also deluxe versions up for pre-order – namely the limited deluxe ($80) and limited collector’s ($150) editions – opening up various perks including the Season Pass, art book and the game’s soundtrack on vinyl.
Now that the October release date is a lock, developer Hanger 13 teased the period setting underpinning its anticipated threequel as so: “The city of New Bordeaux had survived the War of 1812, the Civil War and god knows how many hurricanes. Tom Hardy's FX/BBC One show Taboo has begun production in London. The eight-episode series created by Peaky Blinders' Steven Knight stars Tom Hardy as James Keziah Delaney, a man who returns to London after spending ten years in Africa in 1814, right as the U.S. and the U.K. are at war. He wants to avenge his father's death, so he decides to go up against Jonathan Pryce, who plays Sir Stuart Strange, the head of the East India Company and enemy No. 1. Also joining the cast is House of Cards' Michael Kelly, who will play an American doctor named Dumbarton, Game of Thrones' Oona Chaplin, and David Hayman. But you may breathe a sigh of relief that a television show about the War of 1812 is finally getting made.

“This is a skewed portrayal of the protests; it is what the media chose to portray – the media that consumers bewilderingly seem to want. The real revolution is thousands of people across America standing in solidarity against police brutality.

Considering Kanye West's VMAs announcement that he will be running for president in 2020, obviously our thoughts immediately turned to the most important element of that announcement: First Lady of the United States Kim Kardashian. Here are five historically significant First Ladies from whom Kardashian could take cues if – nay, when – she ascends to that vaunted post.
Dolley Madison: Forward ThinkerFirst of all, Dolley Madison actually took over White House hosting duties during Thomas Jefferson's presidency when his wife died, and Kim is probably going to take over the world at some point, so there are some easy parallels to draw.

The du Pont family made its fortune selling gunpowder during the War of 1812, and soldiered on to invent everything ever worn by a cop: Kevlar, nylon, polyester, synthetic rubber. If you've cooked on Teflon pans, that money's theirs, too. That means you've supported American patriotism, or at least heir John Eleuthère du Pont's version of it, funded and fought on wrestling mats at 10 world championships and three Olympics. (Naturally, the du Pont labs also developed the Lycra spandex for his athlete's singlets.)
John (played here by a ghostly Steve Carell) spent $600,000 of his $200 million fortune to build a wrestling gym at Foxcatcher, his family estate and the name of director Bennett Miller's stone-faced jock drama. He was a lousy wrestler himself: over 50, scr...

Directed in somber monochrome with a 93-minute running time made up of still, slow takes set in the hard-edged pastoral beauty of the American frontier just after the War of 1812, even the most casual film-follower will note a strong Terrence Malick influence on “The Better Angels” even before they see his name listed among the producers behind the film. Director and writer A. J. Edwards, in his feature debut, has in fact worked with Mr. Malick for well near a decade, most notably as an editor, and the apple has not, as the saying goes, fallen far from the.

This coming week brings the 200th birthday of The Star-Spangled Banner. It is, in addition to being notoriously hard to sing, the National Anthem of the United States of America. While the song is used for many different occasions—baseball games and elections and fireworks and War of 1812-themed frat parties—most of the time what happens during its performances is pretty consistent. Those who are sitting stand, those who wear hats remove them, and everyone sort of uncomfortably half sings along while looking for the nearest American flag. It’s that universal ritual that makes unusual uses of...

The valiant defense of Fort McHenry on the night of Sept. 13, 1814, during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812 inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The song eventually was declared the national anthem of the United States by Congress in 1931. In commemoration of 200 years of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” PBS will air a live, two-hour broadcast featuring various performances of patriotic tunes — including, of course, America’s national anthem. John Lithgow (pictured) hosts the event, held at Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore, and is joined by co-host Jordin Sparks. The concert, called … Continue reading →

Fifteen years ago, America was asked a very important question: Who wants to be a millionaire? Turns out lots of people were interested in getting an extra seven figures, and so a game show was born. Originally hosted by Regis Philbin, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? premiered on Aug. 16, 1999. Through the years, the program made some tweaks, but the basic principles have stayed the same. If a hot-seat contestant uses their lifelines wisely and answers all 15 questions correctly, they are going home with at least $1,000,000. Many have come close to the feat, but only 13 folks have reached the big prize so far.

On a cold night in January, George R.R. Martin sits inside the Jean Cocteau Cinema, a revival theater that he owns in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he has lived since 1979. The Cinema had been showing the first three seasons of HBO's megahit series Game of Thrones, which is based on Martin's still-in-the-works saga A Song of Ice and Fire. Historical recreations of war are nothing new, but usually it’s the wars of the distant past that are being replicated: the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War, and so on. In Salem, Oregon though, a group men take their replicated guns, army surplus and fatigues and head into the woods to re-create what most would consider one of the least heroic chapters in American history, Vietnam. Directors Mike Attie and Meghan O’Hara follow this group into the woods for their latest mission, In Country.
Now, the first question that comes to mind is why would anyone want to re-create the experience of being in Vietnam? That’s before the movie even begins. What really starts to make you wonder as you get into the film and meet the various characters though, is why would these people want to re-create Vietnam? He's blown it up in "Independence Day" and crushed it with an aircraft carrier in "2012," but this week, Roland Emmerich rolls out his most concerted assault on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue yet with "White House Down."
The film stars Channing Tatum as John Cale, a recently-rejected Secret Service applicant who's on a consolation tour of the White House with his daughter when a group of disgruntled domestic terrorists invade. With the grounds locked down and the cavalry helpless, it's up to Cale to save the President (Jamie Foxx), his daughter, and the day -- but not the White House, which he tears up almost as much as the bad guys.
So just what is it that the blockbuster director has against the presidential digs anyway? I broke down the destruction in "White House Down" in order to find out.
Emmerich takes his time.

The question you might be asking yourself right now is ‘Leprechaun reboot? That’s a thing?’ Yes, gentle reader, that is indeed a thing and it now has a director in Spielberg discovery Zach Lipovsky.
You’ve probably not heard of Lipovsky either, but he appeared on the reality series On The Lot, in which aspiring filmmakers competed for a deal with DreamWorks. Does this mean that Spielberg has anything to do with the reboot? Nope. But it gives the guy a little bit of credibility.
Right. Lipovsky will direct the reboot of the 1993 classic (?) Leprechaun. The original starred Warwick Davis (who else?) as an evil little Irish caricature searching for his pot o’gold and … well, pretty much killing everyone in the process. The reboot will star WWE star Hornswoggle as the title character. It’s being produced, unsurprisingly, by WWE Studios and Lionsgate, so … yeah.

Ok, we all know this is going to be hard. It was hard to watch. It was hard to process. It was hard to recap. Really hard. Because breakups are hard. Comics fandom does seem to have taken quite readily to this whole auteurism thing, haven’t they? And very few creators have been as rabidly fetishised more than “Hellboy” creator and black ink enthusiast Mike Mignola, to the point that when he releases a new book, Dark Horse executives throw a party like Jesus just came back.
Well, the party must be in full swing, because the first issue of Mignola’s new (written, but not illustrated) two issue miniseries, “Sledgehammer 44” is out. But is it any good?
The story opens in WW2 and Christ alive, Mike, is it just me or are we a bit fixated on The Big One, here? Maybe I’m just making the common mistake of everything you’ve done...

You may think that it will be difficult to be a film snob. You may think that maintaining an attitude of unrelenting condescension and arrogance will be hard to maintain. You may even think that being a film snob will require extensive knowledge of films and cinema history.
But nothing could be further from the truth! With just these five simple steps, you can be a film snob that irritates and baffles anyone unfortunate to be trapped in an oxygen-sharing vicinity with you! Let’s begin.
Step 1. Bully the Conversation
After a movie ends, you will most likely want to discuss it with your friends. Often, the discussions can be as entertaining and enlightening as anything in the movie itself. All kinds of crazy theories and interpretations can get thrown out for discussion.
Now, you may think that a good conversation entails listening as much as contributing, that all opinions are equal and valid,...

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly movie news column that is often written drunk, especially on national holidays. We spent all day celebrating America in all her imperfect, boldly designed glory. No matter where you fall on the current state of American politics and culture, the beauty of it is that you’re free to think and say whatever you want. Around here, we like to say all kinds of things about moving pictures. Some call them movies. They are the backbone of this very nightly column, one that takes you around the movie blogosphere, already in the midst of its celebration of America. If you’re still sober enough to read these words, then you’re ready to do the news. 1. Why can’t the War of 1812 have its own blockbuster? – Pajiba posits a situation in which one of the country’s most important unsung wars gets a movie starring Lena Dunham...

Rumors of our death have been greatly exaggerated...
Sometimes, all it takes is a good joke to brighten up your day. But for a movie fan, all it takes is a couple of weird crossovers, 30 second videos, and random images to make us happy. Hey, we're simple folk. But to find all this stuff, look no further than Laugh it Up, your weekly dose of Lol's and Lmfao's to put you in the right mind set. While it may not be the smartest of comedy...it will certainly put a smile on your face.
What if George Lucas urbanized Star Wars? Not sure if its racist or not, but take a look anyways!
While I don't agree with the pirates, I will admit that the menu system of DVD's is a hassle.
Cat-Batman. Catman? BatCatMan? I don't know, but he has a grizzled chin!
The Yankees use their insane amount of money to buy players,...

Terri (20th Century Fox) An awkward, obese teen (Jacob Wysocki) finds himself forming an odd friendship with his equally left-of-center vice-principal (John C. Reilly), who decides to help the boy navigate his way through adolescence’s rocky road. Low key film is filled with pathos and humor, but is ultimately too laid back for its own good (not to mention too long). Worth seeing for young Wysocki’s amazing, completely natural performance, and Reilly’s goofy charm. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurette; Deleted scenes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
Mr. Nice (Mpi) Rhys Ifans stars in the true story of Howard Marks, a Welsh-born Oxford grad who gained the most notoriety in his life for being the UK’s biggest hashish smuggler during the ‘70s and ‘80s, when he wasn’t busy spying for Her Majesty’s government, hanging out with a...

The Canadian government released new details Wednesday afternoon about Prince William and Kate‘s upcoming tour of Canada, and the newlyweds sure do plan on being active—and adventurous!
William and Kate—who has never been to Canada, let alone North America—will go canoeing, fly in a bush plane, attend the Calgary stampede (and get souvenir cowboy hats!) spend the night in a navy frigate on the St. Lawrence River and attend a street hockey game in the Canadian Arctic. And there’s so much more that’s going to keep them busy during their nine-day visit to Canada!
The Royals arrive in Ottawa, Canada’s capital, on June 30, a day before the country’s birthday of Canada Day, and will make their way across the country, visiting seven cities, four provinces, and one territory. They’ll leave Calgary, Alberta, on June 8 and make their way to Los Angeles,...

For those who might read this title and say, "I thought Lincoln and Douglas were rivals who debated each other. I didn't know they were friends", let me alleviate your confusion. This is not about the Abraham Lincoln/Stephen Douglas debates. This is about Lincoln's relationship with Frederick Douglass, the former slave who escaped his bondage and became a famous abolitionist writer and orator.
Lincoln & Douglass: An American Friendship, brought to us by those helpful people at Scholastic Storybook Treasures, focuses on a possibly fictitious conversation that Lincoln has with Douglass during Lincoln's second inaugural ball. There are three other stories on this DVD, all of which tell a historical tale in a kid-friendly way. Each one is based on a children's book.
The first story posits a scenario where Abraham Lincoln is at his inaugural gala but distracted because his buddy Frederick Douglass hasn't shown up yet. Eventually, Douglass does arrive.

Having experienced firsthand the ferocity and horrors of World War II and wars in Korea and Vietnam on both the national and personal level, like all of us, veteran writer/artist Will Eisner saw something nine years ago he never thought possible: a devastating terrorist attack on New York City and the Pentagon. While both attacks were horrific, the strike and subsequent destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City hit closest to home for Eisner, who grew up in the city and lovingly showed it as a character in many of his works.
Just days after the tragedy of September 11, 2001, MTV News producer Brian Jacks spoke to the native New Yorker about the tragic and emotional events that had gripped his city. Will Eisner has since passed away, but his thoughts are just as poignant today as they were nine years ago.

It may surprise some of you to know that I enjoy taking the piss out of Americans on occasion. It's not that I'm hostile towards our neighbors to the south, I just find it especially amusing that the majority Americans can probably tell you every handgun Smith and Wesson has made since 1852 but couldn't locate Canada on a globe if you painted the country Red and White. I'm not saying Americans are stupid, far from it, but they do have a propensity for considering themselves the only place on the planet while the internets serve only as a means of communication with people that live "somewhere else."
I often imagine what it would be like sitting in on an American geography or history class. What are the textbooks like? Did America invent oxygen or did they just discover it? Did they fight the World Wars alone or did they have the smallest bit of help?...

Most Americans don’t care about soccer, but every American cares about defeating the English. So far, we’ve got an unimpeachable track record on the latter: the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Miracle on the Grass of 1950, and maybe their rock ‘n roll is better than ours, but our hip-hop is much better than theirs. Our national winning streak was tested on Saturday, when the USA faced England in the opening round of the World Cup. Things looked grim for our boys…until English goalkeeper Robert Green let in an easy goal. Watch the blunder here: if you freeze-frame,...

Given that we've heard again about a new Godzilla movie and rumor of back-to-back sequels to Independence Day, I wanted to pitch something related to another Roland Emmerich work. But there's nothing else in his filmography I'd like to revisit. Maybe in another 25 years we can have an elderly Mel Gibson return for a War of 1812-set Patriot 2 or something. Or John Carpenter should reboot Stargate with original star Kurt Russell. But those are even worse ideas than I normally have, so I've decided instead to concentrate on potential Independence Day returnee Will Smith and propose another sequel: Enemy of the State 2.
Outside of Wild Wild West, Tony Scott's Enemy of the State is I believe the only one of Smith's action films not to receive a sequel or at least talk of one. Maybe that's because it opened in second place behind The Rugrats Movie and grossed...

On this day in 1766, Samuel Wilson was born. At the time of the War of 1812, he was a prosperous middle-aged meat-packer in Troy. He obtained a contract to supply beef to the Army in its campaign further north, which he shipped in barrels. The barrels, being government property, were branded with the initials "U.S.", but the soldiers would joke that the initials referred to "Uncle Sam", who supplied the product. Over time, it is believed, anything marked with the same initials (as much Army property was) also became linked with his name.
Later on, he'd become known for the most famous poster in the world, and became a comic book character, first for Quality Comics, then later for DC as the leader of the Freedom Fighters and as the star of a miniseries by Alex Ross.
