This is the Pure Movies review of Animal Kingdom, directed by David Michôd and starring James Frecheville, Joel Edgerton, Bryce Lindemann, Guy Pearce, Paul Smits, Jacki Weaver, Luke Ford and Sullivan Stapleton. There are some accolades that sound like the very opposite; the best giblet-based pate, for example, or the best late-night garage. So, I want you to believe me when I say that Animal Kingdom is the best Australian film that I have ever seen, and I want you to believe it without irony. Animal Kingdom (I know – it sounds like a Disney romp, but stay with me) follows the eighteen year old, vaguely gormless, apparently ‘invisible’ Joshua ‘Jay’ Cody as he passes in to the guardianship of his grandmother. Well, his grandmother and extended family of criminal uncles; Darren, Baz, Craig and Andrew ‘Pope’ Cody. For this, like so many that has gone before it, is a film...

Eddie McGuire has publicly slammed this year's Logie Award nominations. The Australian television star, who is best known for hosting Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, said that he thinks there has "always been questions" over the voting system for the Aussie TV awards ceremony. McGuire is the first celebrity to speak out amongst rumours of stars being displeased at The Circle presenter Chrissie Swan being voted for three newcomer awards despite having been on screen for a year. He told The Daily Telegraph: "You know when you vote for the dumb kid in the class to be the class captain just to gee up the teachers? We don't want to get that going." Swan (more)...

Somebody throw Ben Silverman a lifeline … or at least something to clear up the former NBC/Universal co-chair’s memory. Ben Silverman won't take the stand until midday Thursday, but he’s already the star of Celador International’s case against Disney and it’s TV partners.

NBC has a lot of work to do for next season, so it makes sense that the network would get started early with the pickup of its spy drama "Undercovers."
As much as getting a piece of its 2010-11 schedule in place, though, the pickup is sending a message that NBC is a safe place to play again for people who make scripted dramas. That alone won't reverse a six-year ratings slump, but it's a start.
Following the short-lived and strange Ben Silverman era and the hot mess that was Jay Leno in primetime -- both of which caused grumbling and in some cases outright hostility in the creative community -- NBC signaled early this year that it was jumping back into scripted drama in a big way with shows like "Undercovers" (from J.J. Abrams and Josh Reims), a "Rockford Files" remake from "House" creator David Shore and shows from David E. Kelley,...

SYDNEY -- In what's been viewed in some quarters of the Australian TV industry as an extraordinary appointment, Eddie McGuire, host of the local version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was named Thursday as the new CEO of the Nine Network. McGuire replaces current CEO Sam Chisholm, who took the job from David Gyngell 10 months ago as a transitional CEO. Chisholm remains a non-executive director of Nine Network parent company Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL). True to his current incarnation as one of Nine's brightest on-air stars, McGuire's appointment was formally announced as the lead item on Nine's National News bulletin last night. McGuire said that under his watch he hoped to "reinvigorate the people who watch TV and who work in television and make Nine the epicenter of Australian creativity."...
