Very good quality film

Impressive firt movie for director Louis Bélanger. This is a slow and strange drama, about the solitude of a aging man and

the puirsuit of happinness for a young woman. Very good work from the two stars, Arcand and Moreau, and a wonderful sense of images from the director. Intelligent use of the music, mostly accoustic blues. The film is a little bit bluesy too! Movie like this one, and many others over the ten last years, makes us proud of the cinema in Québec and in Canada.

Warning: Spoilers
***BEWARE. SPOILERS.***

First, let's say that Sylvie Moreau and Gabriel Arcand are both very good in this film. The movie is divided in three segments. The first tells us the story of Linda. She meets men and rob them to make a living. Second segment: we meet Ghislain. He's working night shift at the morgue. He's lonely, listening to the blues seems to be his only hobby. Third segment: Ghislain falls in love with Linda. How they meet is the interesting thing. On one of her trick, she's strangled to death, so her body finds its way to the morgue. Ghislain falls in love with the dead body. The subject of necrophilia is explored here. But, surprise, she's not really dead, she comes back to life, and Ghislain is part of the solution. But will Linda be drawn to Ghislain? Will they end up together?

The director, Louis Bélanger, does a good job making you care for the characters. The first half of the movie is better than the second, when Bélanger seemed to lost control a bit of what was going on. The last scene should have been scrapped altogether.

Out of 100, I give it 78. That's good for **½ out of ****.

Seen at home, in Toronto, on November 30th, 2002.
