Sex & Nudity

  • Ed, a college professor, starts to have sex with one of his students; her breasts are visible in a few shots.
  • Ed's wife had been having an affair with another teacher; this is only discussed.

Violence & Gore

  • A man punches another man in the face twice.
  • Ed's door is broken down by a man wielding a baseball bat.
  • Some bloody images; see "Frightening/Intense Scenes" below.

Profanity

  • 8 to 10 F-words, a handful of S-words and other profanities.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Ed is shown taking prescription pills a number of times; they're said to be sleeping pills. When his new prescription seems to not be working, he swallows the whole bottle with a swig of wine.
  • Ed offers wine to a student of his who is said to be a college freshman, so probably around 18-19 years old.
  • In a panic, Ed consumes all the drugs he finds in his medicine cabinet.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Toward the end, Ed sees his bathtub overflow with blood, and one wall is streaked with it.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Ed leads an intruder into his basement; he sneaks up behind the man and follows him into the shadows. The next shot shows a butcher knife in Ed's blood-covered hands.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Ed finds a finger under a piece of furniture. He tries to flush it down the toilet, but it crawls away and leaves a trail of blood (we're supposed to be unsure if he's hallucinating).
  • Another of Ed's hallucinations is a giant, grotesque, blood-covered baby in his bathtub. Ed gets a knife and presumably "kills" it; all we see is him slicing away as the bathwater fills with blood.
