In Japanese history the Meiji Period, which lasted from 1868 – 1912, saw Japan change from a centuries-old isolated feudal society to a more modern society. The Meiji Period saw Japan being opened to the West and the influence of Europe and America on Japanese culture and society. This period was a time of immense change for the Japanese. It was followed by a very short-lived period called the Taisho period, which lasted just 14 years, from 1912 – 1926. The Taisho Period was a time of liberalism and democratic thinking in Japan, and also marked the beginning of a creative movement called ero guro nansensu. Based upon the shortened English words erotic, grotesque, and nonsense, the ero guro nansensu movement began in literature and art, eventually expanding into theatre, film, and even music.
Over time the original intent of the movement has evolved from an exploration of ideas or objects that were malformed,...

In my duty to keep you up to date on the sleaziest productions in the film industry – the whole world over – I have produced another list for the sleaze mongers among you to enjoy. I love sleaze mongering and if I can make just one sleaze monger happy, my work is worth it.
For this list, I thought I would bring you some of the finest depraved Japanese films to add some zest to the sleaziness. The Japanese are masters of the depraved film and they embrace depravity with open arms – it is just how things are. There are a lot of much stronger Japanese titles out there than the ones I have chosen – but I thought that reviewing All Women Are Whores would provoke outrage.
Nevertheless, if want me to do a list on the really sick Japanese stuff, let me know and I will run it past the editors.

Whether it is art house or Grind house, every cult movie fan depends upon their distributors to provide the goods. Distributors are crucial to the way we look at film – from its presentation on the screen to the quality of its commentaries and DVD extras.
Distributors also decide what films they are going to commit to DVD. This could be the difference between coming by a cool movie or missing out on a hidden gem. Thankfully, more and more cult film distributors have popped up in recent years and the exploitation or art house film has never been so available – Particularly if you live in America or buy a Region Free DVD player. How my life was opened by the purchase of the latter! I have films I thought I would never see.

With a title like Entrails of a Virgin, who wouldn't love this 1986 Japanese film written and directed by Kazuo 'Gaira' Komizu? If ever a flick had Trembles' name all over it, it's this one!
And then there's the synopsis: Members of a film crew making a soft core porn are dismembered by a demon in a warehouse.
It's the first entry in a series of three films by Komizu, the other two being the considerably more graphic and hardcore Entrails of a Beautiful Woman (1986) and Female Inquisitor (1987).

As part of their ongoing efforts to unleash the most wonderfully weird in Asian cinema, the fine folks at Synapse Films are busting out Battle Girl: The Living Dead in Tokyo Bay! In a state of martial law following a meteor crash, Tokyo is overrun with crime, corruption, violence, and ... flesh-eating zombies! But not all hope is lost, for there is K-ko to the rescue! K-ko and her "Battle Suit" thrash their way through the undead, only to find that there may be a far more nefarious nemesis to defeat.
Directed by Kazuo "Gaira" Komizu (Entrails of a Virgin) and starring Japanese wrestling sensation Cutie Suzuki as K-ko, Battle Girl: The Living Dead in Tokyo Bay is the latest in Synapse Films' Asian Cult Cinema Collection, and it's packed full of gory, campy fun!
Make sure to pick up your copy of Battle Girl: The Living Dead in Tokyo...

Synapse Films continue their ongoing campaign to bring early schlock horror and exploitation cinema to the Us, with the release of Kazuo 'Gaira' Komizu’s, Battle Girl: The Living Dead In Tokyo Bay on R1 DVD. Komizu gained notoriety in 80s Japan with films like ‘Entrails of a Virgin’ and ‘Entrails of a Beautiful Woman,’ and from just the titles you can guess in depth character and plot development weren't top of his list. Zombies, nudity, sex, gore and spatter were the name of the game. Nothing new there you’d argue? But then its always interesting to see how they used to do it the “olden” days. Battle Girl goes on sale on Feb 23rd. A meteor lands in Japan and the fallout creates a “shield” around Tokyo, encasing the city in a foggy darkness. A state of martial law is declared. People are in a panic...

Synapse Films gave Fango the scoop that it has snapped up the North American rights to Embodiment Of Evil (see our review of the import release here), the new adventure of Brazilian horror legend José Mojica Marins, a.k.a. Coffin Joe (pictured). The company also provided us the first look at cover art and specs for its upcoming DVD of the Japanese sci-fi/horror opus Battle Girl: The Living Dead In Tokyo Bay (Batoru Garu), streeting February 23.
Embodiment Of Evil’s scenario, written by Marins and Dennison Ramalho, sees the evil Coffin Joe rising from his grave to continue his quest for a woman to bear his child, torturing and killing anyone who stands in his way. The film has won raves and awards at numerous international festivals, including Montreal’s Fantasia (see story here), Spain’s Sitges and others. Synapse will issue the film on DVD and Blu-ray...
