Hilarious yet addicting. (Not completely spoiler)

Warning: Spoilers
This game isn't exactly GOOD. But it's funny, and I can't help but keep on playing this game. It's extremely frustrating at times, but I still keep on trying to get the mystical number of 101%. With 8 stages and 25 golden bananas each (26 in D.K. Isles), you know that's going to take a long time. And it did. I spend over 35 hours playing trying to get a file from a lowly 30-something% to 101%, but in the end, I succeeded. But I spent lots of time trying to figure out what to do in places like Fungi Forest, Crystal Caves, and Creepy Castle with no strategy guides. It took a long time, but luckily some things were quite obvious, if you explore a lot.

Overall, this game is cool. The main thing good about it is its humor level. Almost every cinematic scene has humor in it. Especially the D.K. rap and the special extended ending. There are still some stuff that are a little bit mature for little kids, but I guess that's why this game got a rating of Everyone and not Early Childhood.

Great

This game is great. It has great game play and replay value, always going back to try and get that 101%!!! Anyway it has great music, especially in fungi forest and crystal caverns and it also is fairly difficult to collect all 200 bananas. Or is it 201? You will find out if you try and complete the game in every possible way. This game has good graphics and will keep you going for hours and hours. It also has two bonus games: THe original donkey Kong and if you get 15 banana medals, the classic "Jetpac" game. Overall this is a great game. I would put it up (not quite as high) with Zelda 64 (best game ever made) and Super Mario 64. This game also features Donkey and Diddy, Tiny who you can tell is related to Dixie (the hair twirl move you get later)Lanky, a fairly random clown of a orangutan and last of all Chunky, who appears to be related to Kiddy. Big, chunky, and STROG AS HECK!!!

DK is back and better than ever!

Ook Ook! Aah aah ahh! Ook eek aaahhh eek ooh. Eek eek ook ook ahh ahh ahh ook eek. Eek aah ook ooh eek ooh eek ahh? Eeep eek ook aah aah ook. Eek ook ahh (feces throw). Ook ook Donkey Kong! Eek eek! (Translation: Hey everybody reading my review! IL' stiffdogg is here with a review on Donkey Kong! This monkey melee of an adventure game for the Nintendo 64 is DK's first frolic in 3D, and I hope he has many more. It seems King K. Rool, the demented doofus and king of the Kremlings has returned to blast the DK Islands, and DK, Diddy Kong, Tiny Kong (related to Dixie Kong), Lanky Kong (Unknown Relation), and Chunky Kong (related to Kiddie Kong) are the only monkeys who can foil the foul fiend. DK familiars will recognize Cranky, Funky (what the heck is a Donkey-Dude?) and Candy, but does anyone recall Wrinkly Kong (died in Donkey Kong Country 3)? Anyway, this game is definitely worth playing, with its hilarious moves (check out Lanky's Baboon Balloon!), a multi-player battle royale, and a strange finale you won't stop laughing at. DK has never looked better. Viva la Donkey Kong! Try this game at least!)

Rare rules!
pusterummet17 November 2000
What can I say? Rare does it again! Every time you plug in a Rare Game you know you're in for a real treat! The detail they manage to put into a game...it's simply awesome! I kind of suspected to meet the original Donkey Kong (1981) somewhere in the game, and when i did it was so unreal. Suddently your television is transformed into an arcade machine from 1981...and of course you have to beat the game. So huge hugs from me to all from Rare...though i have to admit that i sometimes want to do some kicking as well...those bonus-rounds can be very frustrating....

Too Much Collecting
zkonedog13 March 2017
For the Nintendo '64 gaming system, the two pre-eminent adventure games were Mario and Zelda. Those games enthralled players with their tight gameplay and interesting stories. Unfortunately, DK '64 doesn't have that same tight gameplay, and the story was never the strong suit of the series.

The problem with this game is obvious after about 30 minutes: It's all about collecting items, and very little else. Whether it is coins, tokens, or bananas, this game quickly devolves into little more than a scavenger hunt for miscellaneous items. Making matters worse is the fact that EACH CHARACTER needs to collect each item to unlock certain features. The game is tedious enough playing just as a single character, but add in the four others and it becomes ridiculous.

The music in this game is engaging (the DK Rap might just be the highlight of the whole experience!), but other than that nothing really stands out. If you don't mind collecting item after item, you'll like this game more than I. If you prefer a developed plot, however, than stay away at all costs

Am I stupid? NO!!! It's a good game dangit!
weather-327 March 2000
What is with those game critics, this game rox!!! And no, it is not a B-K copy-off. Why?

1. Banjo-Kazooie had no mini-games. 2. B-K does not have 2-D Platformer elements incorporated into it. 3. DK64 frustrates the @#*! out of you at times. 4. Hard to believe but DK64 is even funnier than B-K! A cinematic triumph, Dolby Surround Sound included!

Rare has made a terrific game, despite the deeply disturbing DK Rap. If gamers of the SNES era want a 3-D Platformer suited to their needs, they must look no further than DONKEY KONG 64!!!!!!!

Rating: 10.0 / 10.0

THE WORST RARE GAME EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sgtgrizzlyb18 April 2020
I don't know what to say here!!!!!!!!!!!! This game is, hands-down, not only the worst thing to EVER come out of Donkey Kong, but also the WORST game that Rare has EVER made!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's SO MUCH WORSE than Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing interesting happens, the plot is lazy, the controls are pure garbage, and you have to navigate through the same freaking levels over and over with five different Kongs!!!!!!!!!!! About 98% of this game is FILLED with item collecting!!!!!!!!!!! Even more so than Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie!!!!!!!!!!!!!! However, there is one thing I should give it credit for, which is the score by Grant Kirkhope, who composed the music in the latter game, but that's the ONLY good thing I can say about this game!!!!!!!!!!! And don't even get me started with that freaking DK Rap!!!!!!!! I HATE that song with a burning passion!!!!!!!!!!!!! That song is as godforsaken horrible as literally ANY song you would find on ANY show or movie from Disney Channel!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ESPECIALLY that ever-dreaded High School Musical!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can ONLY recommend that you must STAY AWAY from this abomination of a video game entirely!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're better off with just Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, or HECK, just stick with the Donkey Kong Country original trilogy on the Super Nintendo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This REALLY is one rotten banana indeed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Donkey Kong 64!
Movie Nuttball9 December 2004
The Donkey Kong series is one of the most different adventure video games! The characters, the action, and the sure thrill of adventure makes this game a fun non-stop playing time! Below is a brief look how I think the game is!

Game Play: The game play is very good. There is really basic controls here and is easy to perform. Novice gamers should have a good time here!

Graphics: The graphics are wonderful especially for the N64! The backgrounds are really beautiful! The expansion Pak that come with the game make the graphics superb!

Difficulty: The game is easy but as it goes on you find out that it will become more difficult!

Music: The music is great! Just fantastic catchy tunes through out the game! In My opinion its some of the best music ever in a video game!

Sound: The sound is great. Nuff said!

Overall: I have always loved Donkey Kong 64! If you like excellent adventure up games then I strongly recommend you play this game!

Donkey Kong 64
darthdusty11 December 2005
No I believe you mean this game was one of the last games for the N64 to be released, as the N64 was released in 1996. It was, however, one of the first to use the N64's Expansion Pack, and also was one of the best looking games on the N64. Other than that, however, the game isn't that great. Basically you travel to eight areas, all very large. After the fourth world I was getting tired of the game. There is a lot of stuff to collect however, so that's a plus if your into that kind of thing. Basically it was just very basic to me, the multiplayer is pretty cool however. A large cast of characters you play as too, which is nice. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are present, as are newcomers Tiny Kong, which is Dixie Kong's sister, Lenny, and Chunky Kong, who I have no idea where they fit in at. If you missed this game the first time in the 90's, then by all means try it out, if you want the best of 90's Donkey Kong action, go for Donkey Kong Country 1-3 on the SNES.

fantastic

Donkey Kong 64 was the first ever game to be released for the Nintendo 64. This game was made in 1999, Donkey Kong has starred in several Donkey Kong games in the earlier years, in the 1980's he was in his won game donkey kong 1,2,3 and then in the 1990's he was in Donkey Kong Country with Diddy Kong. I give this game 10 out of 10.

Why?
Psade5691 August 2002
This game has no purpose. The only original playable characters are D.K and Diddy. Where's Dixie!!? Dixie is far better than Tiny Kong, there's no originality to any of the new Kong's names either. The music is too cutesy, come on this is supposed to be the comeback of Donkey Kong! Donkey Kong had far more, what can I say, more original music.

Bottom Line... WHY!
