It' been a long time since I've seen this movie, and I doubt I or anyone else will see it again. But I have fond memories of it, so I'd like to give it its due if I can. As I remember, the story takes place in St John's/the Canadian Maritimes. A commercial fisherman has fallen on hard times, and he's in debt. One morning, he leaves without his first mate, and simply drops himself over the side of the boat. I'm pretty sure this serves the purpose of him leaving life insurance to provide for his wife and daughter. THE FIRST SEASON refers to the first year that his wife becomes the fishing owner/operator and carries on the family fishing tradition. Along the way, she enlists the help of one of his old friends (Thompson) who has been "down and out" with emotional stress. He helps them get started in the business and provides a bit of a father figure for the fatherless daughter (Hirt).
