It is always a pleasure when a director manages to blend a particular genre, or even elements of many genres, with themes of spirituality, destiny and questions about how much of our lives is perhaps pre-determined. Thankfully, Japanese director Sabu has the talent and wit to get away with an otherwise quite risky mixture, resulting in entertaining features such as “Dangan Runner”, “Monday” and his last feature “Jam”, which also screened at last year’s Nippon Connection. Therefore it should come with no surprise to see the director continue his unique take on genre conventions and narration in his feature “Dancing Mary”, which combines elements of romance, drama and horror while also delving into themes such like self-determination, all of which spiced with the obligatory deadpan, black humor that has also become an ingredient in his works.

The king of absurdist satire follows up Four Lions with a tragicomic tale of the Feds setting up a deluded preacher as kingpin of a fake terror plan
Billed as being “based on a hundred true stories”, this dark tragicomedy from co-writer/director Chris Morris paints a cracked portrait of counter-terrorism operations in the United States in which imagined enemies are eminently more imprisonable than their real-life counterparts. While The Day Shall Come may lack the breathtaking bite of Morris’s feature debut Four Lions or the experimental weirdness of his head-spinning TV show Jam, it does boast a fine cast, an alarming premise and a palpable sense of anger behind its increasingly absurdist comedy.
Marchánt Davis is Moses, “sultan” of the “Star of Six community farm and mission” in Miami, which preaches salvation through a heady cocktail of education, mysticism and martial arts, inspired by the figure of Haitian rebel Toussaint Louverture.

The third edition of the Japannual Film Festival takes place from 1st to 6th of October in Vienna. This year, the festival celebrates the 150th anniversary of Austrian-Japanese diplomatic relations with an excellent selection of films, showing the highlights of the bygone year. Besides the modern cinema, Japannual features two movies of the infamous director Koji Wakamatsu accompanied by the short films of video artist Yuri Muraoka.
The opening film “Blue Hour” (2019), a multi-layered comedy about a sudden family visit, is the first feature by female director Yuko Hakota and was already celebrated at the Nippon Connection Festival for its portrayal of strong female characters.
Strong female characters can also be seen in Kosai Sekine’s “Love at Least” (2018) and Momoko Fukuda’s “My Father, My Bride” (2019). Both directors will be present at the festival and so it the actress Shuri, who gives an intriguing performance of a mentally ill...

In the world of enka singer Hiroshi (Sho Aoyagi) most of his life revolves around the various performances he has to give in front of crowds largely consisting of middle-aged women. Bored and visibly appalled by these events, he tries to leave them as soon as possible, but this time Masako (Mariko Tsutsui) stops him on his way out of the last venue he sang in. Eventually Hiroshi finds he has been drugged by Masako and drops unconscious, only to find himself back at her apartment when he wakes up.
Interwoven with Hiroshi’s story are the stories of Tetsuo (Nobuyuki Suzuki) and Takeru (Keita Machida). The first is an ex-con who returns to his home town, after having spent many years in jail, to take revenge on those on some men who betrayed him, which eventually led to his arrest. Cult Japanese director Sabu has completed “Jam,” an action film which features three men from completely different walks of life who find themselves heading for a showdown. One is a do-gooder, another a singer, and the third a Yakuza gangster.
The film heads the slate that sales company Free Stone is unwrapping this week at the European Film Market alongside the Berlin Film Festival. Sabu previously attended the Berlinale with 2015 competition film “Chasuke’s Journey.” Germany’s Rapid Eye Movies is handling sales outside Asia.
Kirin Kiki, the veteran Japanese actress who died in September, will appear for the last time on screen in “Erica 38.” Directed by Yuichi Hibi, the film is a crime drama about a 60-year-old woman (Miyoko Asada) who makes a living as a small-time con artist, and gets sucked into an even larger scam by an older woman (Kirin).

After the power, presence and flash of Prince, Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen, U2 and Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl halftime performances — not to mention the controversy of this weekend’s Maroon 5-Travis Scott spot — it’s hard to believe that the big game’s intermission show used to consist of college marching bands along with performers like the lily-white singing/dancing troupe Up with People and the late, great Carol Channing.
In retrospect, it’s surprising that it took 26 Super Bowls for people to realize the marketing potential a 12-minute show with an audience that is now estimated to be 100 million people — the single biggest audience for any musical performance on Earth. As the Stones, McCartney, Gaga and others have learned, it might be the best possible way to promote an upcoming tour.

Disney‘s live-action Beauty and the Beast is a movie that was a safe bet under just about any circumstances, but it actually delivered, and for many it did so well beyond expectations. Not only did it provide the story everyone wanted to relive, but it added some backstory and further character development that brought the story to new levels of depth.
Best of all, it transformed some of the characters, while letting them still live within the same frame. Maurice (Kevin Kline), for example, isn’t the simple, silly kook of the animated version, but a legitimate character with a story that explains his attitude and actions.
It becomes, as I said in my original review (see full review here), something like an attempt to tell the real original, 1740 story (except that it’s very different), thus becoming the temporal anomaly film that was toned down to become a children’s version.

With a cult following that would make even the most mainstream of comedians jealous, Brian Limond, better known to his legion of fans as Limmy, has spent the past decade and a half building a reputation as one of the strangest, most bafflingly brilliant comedians currently working. With the release of his new book, Daft Wee Stories, we sat down for a lengthy chat with Glesga’s favourite son.

Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso have been awfully busy as of late. After a summer residency in Ibiza, the newly formed duo (who prefer to be called Axwell /\ Ingrosso) signed to Def Jam Records last month and are now planning to put out a debut album in early 2015.
If you’ve seen the two DJs perform live over the past few months, it’s likely that you’ll have already heard some of their new material. However, if you haven’t had the chance to catch them in action yet, fear not, as the duo has uploaded a bunch of unreleased music onto their SoundCloud account, most of which we assume will find its way onto their debut album.
What we get here is some music from their Ultra Music Festival Japan set, as well as a couple low quality versions of songs like This Time (We Can’t Go Home), Music Doing Doing,...

From You’re Next director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett comes The Guest, a wacko action/horror comedy that rocks and rolls like a midnight madness movie, where expectations about pacing and tone are challenged, and good ol’ cinematic chaos reigns. Leading the film is Dan Stevens, formerly of BBC series “Downton Abbey,” who plays a kind ex-soldier named David who shows up one day at the Peterson family’s door, and begins to cozy into their daily lives. However, as the soldier spends more time as visitor, he slowly reveals himself to be a strangely wired individual, whose charm and incredible presence only provides a mask for his true origins.
Along with You’re Next, Wingard & Barrett have also made films like A Horrible Way to Die, and the V/H/S anthology shorts. Both of them also appeared as actors in Joe Swanberg’s post-Drinking Buddies experimental murder mystery 24 Exposures.

We has the good chance to speak to Mc Nocando, a rapper from Los Angeles, California. He is the 2007 Scribble Jam champion, host of Low End Theory and founder of Hellfyre Club. He is currently signed to Alpha Pup Records.
Where did you grow up?
I’m from south central La. 57th and Western to be exact. I used to hang out in Leimert Park in my late teens and honed my craft. I started rapping in Fairfield after my Pops died.
At what point did you decide to pursue hip hop as a career?
I never really knew. Rapping was the first thing that I ever really excelled at. I was never good anything so I kept doing it because it made me feel good about myself really. I was a geek and an underachiever in school. I always had a way with words from reading comics and watching...

Can you believe it's seven and a half years since The It Crowd made its debut on Channel 4? Since then, its central cast have become household names.
While curmudgeonly, unlucky It technician Roy (Chris O'Dowd) and technophobic head of department Jen (Katherine Parkinson) have provided barrels of laughs over four seasons, we'd venture that one Maurice Moss has provided the Graham Linehan-created comedy's breakout moments down the years - thanks in equal measure to some sharp writing and impeccable comic timing from Richard Ayoade.
Choosing just five moments of Moss gold from The It Crowd is a thankless and near impossible task (apologies to fans of 'Ploppers', 'I've got a motherflipping gun', Moss's court testimony in Reynholm vs Reynholm and the ludicrous Dragon's Den episode), but here's Tube Talk's personal favourites ahead of the show's grand finale tonight (September 27):

★★★★★ Nowhere (1997) follows Totally F***ed Up (1993) and The Doom Generation (1995) as the third and final instalment in renegade filmmaker Gregg Araki's Teenage Apocalypse trilogy. Jam-packed full of rampant, libidinous teens that exist in a multicultural, pop art, dystopian fantasy, watching Nowhere is what might happen were you to read Naked Lunch before bed. Araki's muse James Duval is at the centre of the action, his character Dark Smith the embodiment of the apocalypse. He edits tapes in an attempt to control his life, whilst his bisexual girlfriend, Mel (Rachel True), simply can't commit to him.
This lack of commitment sees Dark's mind become a mass of bubbling confusion, especially after meeting Montgomery (Nathan Bexton). The theme of alienation follows Dark like a heavy cloud, eventually taking on literal form in a scene involving a ghastly explosion that would make undoubtedly have made Franz Kafka proud. Various interconnected sup-plots...

First announced back in April , Warner Bros. Pictures' adaptation of Japanese author Chohei Kambayashi's alien invasion novel Yukikaze has found a writer in Dan Mazeau ( Wrath of the Titans ). Tom Cruise remains attached to star. The serialized Yukikaze began being published in the pages of Sf Magazine in 1979. The collected version of the tale is officially described as follows: More than thirty years ago, a hyper-dimensional passageway suddenly appeared over the continent of Antarctica. Fighters from the mysterious alien force known as the Jam poured through the passage, the first wave an attempted terrestrial invasion. Their ferocity was unquestionable, their aim unknown. Humanity, united by a common enemy, managed to repel the invaders, chasing them back through the...

Tom Cruise's renewed dalliance with sci-fi is set to continue. We knew that, following the success of Oblivion and the buzz around Edge Of Tomorrow, one of his next journies into the future would be an adaptation of Chohei Kambayashi's novel (and subsequent anime) Yukikaze. That project now has a screenwriter, in Wrath Of The Titans' Dan Mazeau.Set later this century, Yukikaze involves Earth suffering an invasion of mechanical hive-minded aliens through an interdimensional portal. Said monsters are known as the Jam, but are nothing to do with fruit conserves, Chris Morris, Paul Weller or the Klf. Earth dubs their home planet "Fairy", and sends a crack team of fighter pilots through the rift to take the offensive to the Jam. This team is called The Fairy Air Force. We will be very surprised if these names make it to the Hollywood version.Problematic translations aside, what...

The cult 1988 anime taught western film-makers new ideas in storytelling, and helped cartoons grow up
Internet lore has it that Steven Spielberg and George Lucas turned down the chance to pick up the rights to the exalted 1988 anime Akira, believing it to be unmarketable in America. Twenty years later, something had changed: Spielberg and DreamWorks were in production on a live-action remake of Ghost in the Shell, perhaps the next-biggest crossover anime title, with the beard buttering it up in the press as "one of my favourite stories". But he missed the chance to be there at the beginning for artist-director Katsuhiro Otomo's earlier masterpiece – 25 this year – when its enervating hyper-realism left retina burn in the eyes of action fans and film-makers worldwide.
Akira swiftly became midnight-movie fodder in the Us, on a small release through Streamline Entertainment. Its dynamism and attention to detail – honed by Otomo in the...

Revealed at Japan Expo in France over the holiday weekend is the latest, fresh off the assembly line Pocket Monster, set to debut in the upcoming Pokémon X and Pokémon Y for the 3Ds. His name is Honedge, is both a steel and ghost type, plus as you can clearly see, he looks like a sword.
Junichi Masuda from Game Freak, the stewards of the Pokemon franchise, explains all in the video above, prepped for Japan Expo attendees. Though most of it covers the fact that X and Y's setting, the Kalos region, was primarily inspired by France.
Not a whole lot is known about Honedge (named Hitosuki in Japan), other than what Masuda has stated. Again, he's a mixture of two different types and is supposedly "an ancient soul is thought to reside in the sword."
Meanwhile, Tiny Cartridge has some additional insight. Apparently the aforementioned soul was once human,...

That Tom Cruise fella sure does love him some science fiction. Deadline report that the Oblivion actor has just made a deal to become attached to star in Yukikaze, a film based a series of Japanese sci-fi novels by Chohel Kamayashi -- apparently Japan’s answer to Isaac Asimov. The novels (which have also spawned various Manga and Anime series) deal with humanities's struggle against a mysterious alien force known as the Jam. Warner Bros will finance and distribute, and the film will be produced by 3 Arts’ Erwin Stoff and Tom Lassally.

Exclusive: With a $61 million opening weekend overseas on Universal Pictures’ Oblivion, who could blame Tom Cruise for wanting to stay in science fiction mode? He’s just made a deal to become attached to star in Yukikaze, a big-scale film based on a series of Japanese sci-fi novels by Chohei Kambayashi. Warner Bros acquired the novel series and will finance and distribute. The author has been called Japan’s answer to Isaac Asimov, and the film will be produced by 3 Arts’ Erwin Stoff and Tom Lassally, who developed and produced the sci-fi film All You Need Is Kill that Cruise starred in for Warner Bros and director Doug Liman. Viz Media’s Jason Hoffs will also be producing. Yukikaze unfolds in the early 21st Century, three decades after the alien force Jam invaded earth through a dimensional porthole that appeared over Antarctica. While humans beat back the attack, they form...

Continuing on from part one, when comedy meets horror is an attempt to track the most interesting examples of films that mix comedy and horror together. As a genre, its possibly the one that can be pinpointed as the biggest perpetrator for bad horror movies. For example, Scary Movie is the film that comes to mind with people who have a less specialist interest in cinema. Just before we get into part 2, I can safely report that the aforementioned franchise won’t be getting its mits anywhere near these articles. Also, another worthy note of mention – look forward to part 5 in which the entries will be “the greatest horror comedies ever made”. Until then, we are just warming up.
Save The Green Planet
Save the green planet is quite the Korean eccentricity. Mixing together torture, slapstick comedy, highly stylised fight scenes, police procedural and sci-fi results in a concoction that defies definition.

Since 2003, Josh Schwartz has helped turn, among others, Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson, Adam Brody, Penn Badgley, Zachary Levi and Chace Crawford into television stars. Now 36, the writer-producer behind "The O.C.," "Gossip Girl" and "Chuck" -- as well as, perhaps, the mid-decade success of Death Cab For Cutie -- has taken his talents to the multiplex for the teen comedy "Fun Size."
Out on Oct. 26, "Fun Size" is a one-crazy-night movie about what happens when a high school senior named Wren (Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice) loses her kid brother on Halloween night. Aided by a snappy best friend (Jane Levy, doing her best Summer Roberts impression) and a love-lorn nerd (Thomas Mann), Wren must find her brother before her mother (Chelsea Handler) gets home for the night. Julia Davis is famous for creating some of the most uncomfortably bleak comedies of recent times. Now the star of Nighty Night is turning her dark powers to period drama in her new series Hunderby
The writer and performer Julia Davis is too good-natured to show it much, but she's plainly exasperated by descriptions of her work as "bleak" or "dark". They make it sound as if she's deliberately trying to be edgy, and this doesn't chime with her sense of herself. She enjoys watching old episodes of Friends, she insists; she's partial to 1980s movies and upbeat self-help books, and when she writes, she just writes what comes naturally. "I would never say, ooh, let's do something really dark," she says. Yet she is responsible for what are, without doubt, some of the most unsettling characters in contemporary comedy: smiling suburban sociopaths; meddlesome cold-eyed narcissists; horrifyingly mistreated spouses whose...

This year mark’s the amazing 20th anniversary of $100 Film Festival, making it Calgary’s oldest film fests and one of the last ones devoted solely to film. The cinematic fun will run at the Stanford Perrot Lecture Theater on March 8-10 with three nights of short movies produced on 16mm and 8mm film.
What began as a modest affair simply to promote local filmmaking efforts, the $100 is now an international festival with movies this year from the U.S., Germany, Spain, Japan and, of course, Canada. The fest is also celebrating the work of American filmmaker Robert Todd, who will be on hand to screen some of his movies as well as host a workshop on experimental documentary filmmaking techniques.

Rihanna is back in the headlines for her controversial music collaboration with ex Chris Brown for a remix of the song Birthday Cake off her latest album. Here are five things you may not know about this sexy songstress and fierce fashionista.
1. Born February 20, 1988 in St. Michael, Barbados. Her mom was an accountant and her dad worked as a warehouse supervisor.
2. After she arrived in America at age 16 to pursue a music career, she auditioned for Jay-z and was hours later was signed to Def Jam Records.
Has Rihanna Put Chris Brown on Her New Song?
3. Growing up her mother wouldn't let Rihanna wear makeup, so it's ironic that she landed a contract as a Cover Girl spokesmodel.
4. Is picky when it comes to eating and is said to dislike Mexican, Chinese, Japanese and Indian food. She also hates vegetables, but says she makes herself eat some to maintain a balanced diet.

Def Jam Rihanna in the video “We Found Love”
The editor-in-chief of the Dutch fashion magazine “Jackie” resigned following the publication of an article that called singer Rihanna “the ultimate n—-b—-.” Eva Hoeke, who helmed the magazine for eight years, stepped down following the story that was translated by Parlour Magazine as “she has street cred, she has a ghetto ass and she has a golden throat. Rihanna, the good girl gone bad, is the ultimate n—-b—- and displays that gladly,...

Charlie Brooker’s Twilight Zone inspired horror anthology Black Mirror begins on Sunday with “The National Anthem”, the first of three stand alone episodes which at once juggle razor sharp satire, silly jokes and disturbing imagery. It’s safe to say it’s unlike anything else you’ve seen on British television in the last twelve months – in fact you’d probably have to reach back to Chris Morris’ similarly warped Jam to find something even remotely similar.
The premise of this episode is difficult to explain without spoilers, so to put it extremely vaguely: it’s about a Prime Minister (Rory Kinnear) who awakens one morning to find that a member of the Royal Family has been taken hostage and will be killed if he doesn’t fulfil an unusual and embarrassing demand on live television within the next few hours. He spends the rest...

The Hollywood Interview is sad to report the untimely death of rapper/actor Heavy D at age 44. I interviewed Heavy D for Venice Magazine, back in June of 2005, as he was making his theatrical debut in Hollywood, in the play "Medal of Honor Rag." He was a soft-spoken, thoughtful man whose imposing physical presence couldn't hide what seemed like an inherently gentle nature. Of the hundreds of hours of interviews I've logged over the years, ours was one of the most memorable. He will be missed. Rest in peace.

It’s fair to say that Heavy D was one of the first rap/hip-hop artists whose work crossed over into the “mainstream,” earning him points with urban fans as well as those in the suburbs. While many people were left with a bad taste from what they...

Monster Brawl
Director/writer: Jesse T. Cook
Country: Canada
Running Time: 85 mins
Certificate: 18
Starring: Dave Foley, Art Hindle, Robert Maillet, Kevin Nash, Jimmy Hart, Herb Dean
The writer and director of 2008's horror flick Scarce, Jesse T. Cook, revisits the genre in his latest film Monster Brawl. “The time will come when monsters shape the futures of all” begins a suitably jocular voice-over that introduces us to the “most highly-anticipated extreme sport ever”. Making a horror enthusiast's hypothetical pub chat a reality, Cook pits some of the genre's most celebrated figures against each other in the wrestling ring.
Eight of the most powerful ghouls of all time from all four corners of the earth come together and are structured into “two conferences” with middle and heavy weight “monsters” and “creatures”, such as “Witch Bitch”. An American TV show set-up is quickly established with presenter, Buzz Chambers hosting from a secret cemetery location.

Yesterday I reviewed Hellacious Acres: The Case of John Glass for all my independent-minded Sf cohorts here at Boomtron. Today I am thrilled to bring you an exclusive and extensive interview with the film’s director, Pat Tremblay.
Before we jump into the Q&A, I invite you to check out the official movie trailer, which gives a great tease for the delights and horrors that await you on those hellacious acres of post-apocalyptic ground….
Elena Nola: What’s your background with science fiction in general and Sf movies in particular? For ex., did you grow up watching b-side campy stuff with your parents, or was it a genre you came to in adulthood?
Pat Tremblay: Well, I remember clearly at 7 years old going to my school on a couple of Sundays in what seemed to be a heavy winter, just to go see films they were playing in 16Mm in the gymnasium.

Hollywoodnews.com: We’ve been telling you for years that the Toronto International Film Festival rocks, but this year it will be louder than ever.
After revealing that the 36th annual Tiff would open with the world premiere of David Guggenheim’s U2 documentary “From the Sky Down” and also screen Cameron Crowe’s Peal Jam doc “Pearl Jam Twenty,” THR reports that Tiff programmers are poised to announce the addition of Jonathan Demme’s latest Neil Young documentary to its musical lineup.
The trade said this concert video will complete Demme’s trilogy, which also includes “Neil Young: Heart of Gold” and “Neil Young Trunk Show.”
As the trade states, Demme’s concert film “was shot last May over two nights at Massey Hall in Toronto, and captured Young’s Le Noise solo tour produced by Daniel Lanois.”
This builds on the classic-rock icons Tiff...
