The WRESTLEMANIA that really set the future
morantjavonte9 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
WrestleMania III Thoughts.

WrestleMainia III was the 3rd Annual WrestleMania event produced by the WWF. It took place in Pontiac Michigan. WWF/E brings it was by far one of the biggest revenues at the time. At least what "they" said, a record breaking attendance of 93,173 for a live indoor stage. This WrestleMania was known to have set the stage of what WrestleMania is today. The show was stacked and the crowd was hot all night and boy did WWF/E live up to the standards. Honestly this vision of Vince you can honesty say is the beginning of an era.

The Good - I honestly don't know where to start. The show wasn't just a major improvement over WM2 in booking but just about everything. The card stacked from so many historic ground breaking moments and what is possibly the best crowd in Wrestling history. Speaking of best, Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat may possibly be the best Intercontinental Championship match in WrestleMania history. Savage/Steamboat honestly stole the show and even overshadowed the main event. No matter how hard Vince tries to put the main even over, this match was still the best of the night. Other great moments were Roddy wishing his farewell to the fans, 6 man tag match, and of course the atmosphere and story of the main event. And Jake Roberts scaring Jimmy Hart with the Snake was the most funniest moment of the entire show.

The Meh - Well not much to say. They don't allow it now in days and I understand why. Crowds throwing trash is funny and a great way to show heat against heels but of course there were hotheads who just didn't know when it's enough. Don't know any other weird but forgettable moments. I wish the aftermath of the Harley Race vs. Junkyard Dog match was better.

The Bad - Nothing wasn't absolutely terrible from the show but nothing is ever perfect. Clearly some matches were booked for space filler and they were disappointing. The 6 man match that involved King Kong Bundy and the dwarfs was very Lackluster and was kind of a waste of time. Might have been comedy they were going for.

Overall - The Best WrestleMania of the 80s? It maybe. Deserves the nostalgic credit it gets from fans who grew up around it. It also deserves the credit for putting WrestleMania into a different level. I've seen it only a few times so I might get some heat that the score it too high but what the heck.

Score - 9 out of 10: Awesome

0 = Terrible : 1 = Bad/Lackluster : 2 = Decent : 3 = Good : 4 = Awesome : 5 = One of the Best of all Time :

Wrestlemania III, 1987
Some say arguably the most important Wrestlemania of all time. I agree in a way partly because of The Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant match. WWF expertly produced this match so that as you were a fan in those days (I was 1 in 1987, so I didn't know what a television was never mind wrestling) you felt that you had to see it. However WWF falsely claimed that Hogan had never body slammed Andre and that Andre was undefeated, both claims were false. The match will go down as a classic because of Hogan and Andre's drawing power in the 1980's but the match was the pits.

The best match on the card was the classic Ricky Steamboat vs Randy Savage confrontation for the Intercontinental Championship. Fast paced, expertly timed and tonnes of near finishes and pins this is still remembered today as being one of the greatest matches ever.

However there were terrible matches on the card, for instance who in their right frame of mind would want to see Koko B Ware vs Butch Reed? and The Iron Sheik and Nicolai Volkoff vs The Killer Bees? Not this reviewer. However it also features a memorable 6 man match featuring King Kong Bundy and Hill Bily Jim and four midgets (the sight of Bundy splashing Little Beaver (RIP little fellah) at the time was considered shocking), and it also featured another memorable match this time pitting Roddy piper vs Adrian Adonis in a hair vs hair match. Sadly Adonis died in 1988 in a car accident.

This Wrestlemania also featured Alice Cooper who looked terrible and the sight of Jimmy Hart terrified of Jake 'the snake' Roberts python Damien will have you laughing out loud.

Results from the show which was held at the Pontiac Silver Dome in Detroit, Michigan before a crowd of 78,000, not 93,000 as some fans think, the WWF said this to set a brand new attendance record apparently: The Cam Am Connection (Rick Martel and Tom Zenk) downed 'Cowboy' Bob Orton and Magnificent Muraco in a good opener.... Hercules defeated Billy Jack Hayes in a terrible match.... Hilly Billy Jim, Little Beaver and The Haiti Kid beat King Kong Bundy, Lord Littlebrook and Little Tokoyo via DQ in a memorable 6 man match.... Harley Race defeated Junk Yard Dog in a colossal bore.... The Dream Team (Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake) defeated The Rougeou Brothers (Jaqcues and Raymond) in a good tag match.... Butch Reed defeated Koko B Ware in a an instantly forgettable collision.... Roddy Piper defeated Adrian Adonis in a hair vs hair match (Brutus Beefcake who turned face previously on the card, ran down to ringside and helped Piper cut of Adonis' hair).... The Hart Foundation (Jim 'the anvil' Neidhart and Bret 'hitman' Hart) and Danny David defeated Tito Santana and The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite kid) in a fine match.... Ricky Steamboat downed Randy Savage to win the Intercontinental Championship in a superb match.... The Honky Tonk Man downed Jake 'the snake' Roberts.... The Iron Sheik and Nicolai Volkoff defeated The Killer Bees (Jim Brunzell and B Brian Blair) via DQ when Jim Duggan hit Sheik with the 2 by 4.... Hulk Hogan pinned Andre the Giant to retain the Heavyweight Championship in a match which bombed, but is still remembered as a classic because of their drawing powers in the 1980's.

Many of you may not remember this but Ricky Steamboat did not have the belt for long. Here's the story, Steamboat asked for time off to be with his wife and young son after his match with Savage, the WWF complied but he had to drop the belt first. It was originally going to be Butch Reed (erm, why?) but Reed failed to show up to a house show and the decision was made to make The Honky tonk Man the champion and he shockingly defeated Steamboat for the gold. Honky still claims to be the greatest IC champ even to this day and that's not his character speaking either. If he generally believes this then perhaps he needs to continue to shake rattle and roll on the Indie Circuit where he occasional wrestles to this day.

Overall Grade - B

These WERE the days for the WWF. It's 1987, the absolute height of Hulkamania and there's 93,000 VERY loud fans cheering and booing in all the right places. Perfect. Randy Savage vs Rick Steamboat is the finest 15 minutes of your life, it's a truly great match. Elsewhere, the matches aren't all great, but the sense of history and fun carry them all through. A real wrestling classic, up there with WrestleMania 10 as a 100% great event.

Bigger! Badder! Better!
Eraser817 January 2003
This is no doubt the biggest Wrestlemania of them all! 93,172 fans jam packed the Pontiac Silverdome and had the pleasure of seeing Hulk Hogan body slam Andre the Giant!! Man if I would of saw that live, I would have went right through the roof of the Silverdome. Every time I drive past that arena I don't think about how the Lions used to play there, I think about Wrestlemania III!!

Savage vs Steamboat was a great match as everybody knows. Steamboats reign didn't last too long though, as he would eventually lose the belt to the future Greatest Intercontinental Champion of All Time!, The Honky Tonk Man.

A must see for all wrestling fans.

Biggest match ever headlines the best of the early Wrestlemanias
bh_tafe311 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Randy Savage and Ricky Steamboat put on a classic, The Hart Foundation and The British Bulldogs put on a clinic and Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant shook the planet in the biggest and most entertaining PPV extravaganza the wrestling world had so far seen.

Seen by a massive crowd of somewhere between 75,000 and 80,000 people, (the figure of 93,000 the WWE so often trots out is a fiction) this PPV changed the WWE forever and gave the company an exciting new direction that would set it up for the next two years.

Like most of the early PPVs, this one is heavy on matches, so I'll just go through the card and only talk about the big matches.

In the show opener Rick Martel and Tom Zenk defeated Bob Orton and the Magnificent Maruco in a tag match, Hercules and Billy Jack Haynes were both counted out in a Full Nelson challenge match with Haynes putting Hercules in the full nelson outside the ring. Evil manager Bobby Heenan lured Haynes into the ring where Hercules took him by surprise and put him in a full nelson. Dastardly.

Hillbilly Jim and his midget friends Little Beaver and The Haiti Kid defeated King Kong BUndy and his midget allies Lord Littlebrook and Little Tokyo by disqualification after Bundy hit Beaver. Harley Race defeated the Junk Yard Dog in a "loser must bow" match. Dog bowed and then smashed Race in the head with a steel chair.

In the next match Dino Bravo helped the Dream Team of Brutus Beefcake and Greg Valentine to defeat the Fabulous Rougeaus. Beefcake and Valentine argued the whole match and Beefcake was left in the ring on his own as Bravo and Valentine walked to the back. Roddy Piper then defeated Adrian Adonis in a retirement match. Fun to watch with a false ending.

Next up was the best match of the night so far as Danny Davis and the Hart Foundation defeated Tito Santana and The Britiush Bulldogs in an excellent six man tag match after Davis knocked out Davey Boy Smith with Jimmy Hart's megaphone. Butch Reed then defeated Koko B Ware.

The next match was one of the best in any Wrestlemania as Ricky Steamboat defeated Randy Savage to win the Intercontinental Championship. Savage cheated a few times, even going for the bell, he hit the flying elbow, but Steamboat kicks out, Savage stayed on the offensive but Steamboat came back, Savage kicking out of a couple of pinning predicaments but Steamboat eventually won with a small package. The crowd applauded the match, which was an absolute classic. The next match saw Alice Cooper attack the Honky Tonk Man with a python after he had cheated to defeat Jake Roberts.

Evil foreigners The Iron Shiek and Nikolai Volkoff defeated the Killer Bees by disqualification in our next match. Hacksaw Jim Duggan smashed Sheik with two by four when he had one of the bees in the camel clutch.

This brings us to the Main Event. Bobby Heenan had been trying to get the WWE Title off Hulk Hogan for years, enlisting the help of Big John Studd, Paul Orndorff and King Kong Bundy among others but this time he had Andre the Giant, supposedly undefeated for 15 years, in his corner.

Hogan looked to have lost the match early on, but the referee claimed he hadn't counted to three. Hogan came back and body slammed Andre!!!!! Impossible, unbelievable, earth shattering. Leg Drop 1,2,3! Hogan wins! Hulkamania is still running wild! A lot of people take all the fun out of this match by trying to rate it technically. But really, who cares? This match was a gift, just enjoy it.

This is still a terrific spectacle today, well worth watching. Hogan/ Andre was the biggest match the wrestling world had seen at that time and Savage/ Steamboat was as good as anything ever seen at a Wrestlemania event. Now available in a DVD Champiosnhip Edition. Well worth tracking down.

Mediocre, but definitely worth a watch
Tidaleye23 September 2000
Wrestlemania 3 truly is the big one. Hogan/Andre, while a horrible, awful match, is still one of the most important matches in professional wrestling history.

Randy Savage/Ricky Steamboat on the other hand is old school wrestling at its finest. A definite must see match.

Amazing improvement after the pain that was second part!
markovd1118 December 2019
Love or hate professional wrestling, "WrestleMania III" is a fun ride packed with action and tense fights that manage to be fun and interesting with their fight choreography and acting. Definite highlights are Ricky Steamboat vs Macho man and Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant! I give it 8/10 and recommend this one even to people that don't normally like wrestling, because this really was a historic moment for this sport and paid events generally!

After Steamboat/Savage, Everything Changes
zkonedog6 March 2017
For the first two Wrestlemania events, as well as the first half of this third production, the concept of Wrestlemania was very hit-and-miss (with probably more misses than hits, to be perfectly honest). However, once Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat and "Macho Man" Randy Savage wage an epic battle for the Intercontinental Title, the formula really clicks into place.

What really changes in Wrestlemania III is that the drama of the whole spectacle is finally allowed to be played out. Whereas other previous wrestling events relied too heavily on celebrity gimmicks or outrageous personalities, the halfway point of Wrestlemania III suddenly proves that the combination of athletic wrestling, fun characters, and dramatic backstories can carry each and every event (not just the main events).

After Dragon/Macho, Jake "The Snake" Roberts vs. Honkytonk Man is another fun match, while of course the main Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant finale is one of the most revered matches in WWF history if only for the kind of buzz it generated for the business.

A lot of credit also has to go to the amazing broadcast team of Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse "The Body" Ventura, who inject great humor (from an adult perspective) into the proceedings with their satire of each and every match. No announcing pairing every topped these two.

So, although Wrestlemania III is just an "okay" event when looked at from beginning to end (hence the three-star rating), it marks the turning point for WWF pay-per-views...the event where they finally start to figure out the winning formula for creating blockbuster wrestling events.

An epic event the world was watching.
atomicjeff-4185022 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Wrestlemania III is probably one of the greastest wrestling spectaculars of all time and truly was the WWF's hight of success in the 1980's. The entire card had many entertaining matches that was carried by the strength of its main event, which of course was Hulk Hogan vs Andre The Giant. I can remember going to a close circuit tv event at one of our commercial arenas which had a sold out venue. I remember how excited and amped up the crowd was during the show. We had so much fun its a lasting memory during my teen years I will cherish forever. The main event had the crowd out of theirs seats including me as well. When Hogan body slammed Andre the noise from that arena was deafening and when he dropped his patented leg drop to pin Andre it made wrestling history. Andre was the big icon of wrestling in the 70's and early 80's. Andre's health was starting to deteriorate from his illness and many people have often overlooked the significance of Andre losing to Hogan, which was prescripted. Andre was passing the baton to Hulk Hogan which caused Hulkamania to explode like never before and no wrestler had ever come close to the popularity of Hogan after that match. Wrestlemania III in my opinion will go down as the greatest wrestling promotion of all time. Thank you Vince, the wrestlers, and all the people behind the scenes that made this extravaganza a legendary event for all times.

The Wrestlemania of all Wrestlemanias
Playa997820 March 2004
Warning: Spoilers
It made history on March 29, 1987 at the Pontiac Silver Dome in Detroit, Michigan. Most of the bouts were indeed memorable and others defining those words as electrifying. Here is the line-up and recap.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS...BEWARE!!!

Opening match pits The Can-Am Connection against the team of Cowboy Bob Ortan and Magnificent Muraco. The Can-Am was in control during the majority of the match. The crowd was feeling the bout, and the Can-Am pulled out a stunner by defeating Muraco and Ortan. (Martel pinned Don Muraco for the victory).

Billy Jack Haynes and Hercules fought to a double count-out. After the bell, Herc went for broke and bashed Billy Jack in the head with a chain. Blood was splattered everywhere to the disgust of the crowd.

Hill Billy Jim and his two midgets defeat King Kong Bundy and two of his midgets via disqualification after Bundy squashed one of the midgets and broke the rules.

King Harley Race scored a pinfall win over Junk Yard Dog by using a belly-to-belly suplex, after Bobby Heenan interfered. At the end of the match, JYD hammered the King with the chair, and the crowd cheered on.

The Dream Team beat the Rougeau Brothers. (Greg Valentine pinned Raymond after Dino Bravo interfered) Following the match, Beefcake was left in the ring, as Valentine and Bravo turned their backs on him.

Roddy Piper takes the Adorable one "Adrian Adonis" out of the game and the match by defeating him in front of the world with the sleeper hold. Proceeding the bout, Beefcake chopped off Adonis hair, and then Piper retired indefinitely.

The world tag team champions, The Hart Foundation and Danny Davis defeat the British Bulldogs and Tito Santana. (Davis pinned Davey Boy after getting smacked with the infamous megaphone)

Butch Reed rolled Ko Ko B. Ware into a pin to score the win.

Ricky "the Dragon" Steamboat defeated Randy "Macho Man" Savage to win the intercontinental belt in a fantastic matchup. Savage tried to use the infamous bell again, but George Steele interfered and prevented history from repeating itself. The crowd was nearly moved to tears after the match, as Ricky Steamboat held the title in the air.

Jake the Snake Roberts goes for the DDT on the Honky Tonk Man, but fails as Jimmy Hart interferes, and Honky slips the Snake from behind to pull the upset. Jake went after Honky Tonk at the end of the match, but could not get him. Alice Cooper got a hold of Jimmy Hart, and the Snake put the python on the scrawny manager.

Nikolia Volkoff and the Iron Sheik defeat the Killer Bees via DQ after Hacksaw jumped in and whacked the sheik with the two-by-four.

Hulk Hogan shocks the world as he slams Andre the Giant and scores the win after the leg drop. Hogan defends the title and rocks the universe forever.

Possibly the best Wrestlemania ever
brentdarling821 February 2001
Wrestlemania 3 has to be the best of all 16 Wrestlemanias made. To start off, nearly 94,000 packed the gigantic Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan to watch this spectacle. The best match of them all was definitely the Macho Man Randy Savage vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat for the WWF Intercontinental Title. But the one match that made history was Hogan vs. Andre the Giant for the WWF title.

Battle of the wrestling behemoths!!
Captain_Couth4 June 2004
Wrestlemania III (1987) took place during the apex of Hulkamania. The card was held in the cavernous Silverdome. To see over 70,000 people packed into a stadium to watch wrestle is a site to behold. The people were screaming and cheering like crazy for the Hulkster who faced his biggest challenge yet to himself and Hulkamania. The Boss himself Andre the Giant challenged Hulk Hogan to a title shot. Like all of the Hulk's friends they grow jealous of his spotlight and they all want to take him out and grab his gold championship belt. Believe it or not this started out over the size of a trophy!!!

The card is the most entertaining so far out of the first three Wrestlemanias. But the most talked about match on this card isn't the hyped match between Hogan and Andre but the show Macho Man and Ricky Steamboat put on in front of the fans. Some have called it one of the best ever. Rumor has it many people were upset about the two upstaging the two stars and poor Steamboat was punished for it. After another year in the W.W.F. he headed back for Jim Crockett Promotions where he and long time rival Ric Flair would put on some of the best displays of old school pro wrestling.

All of the top stars are featured in this supercard. Titan Sports and the W.W.F. where at their peak of popularity and revenue generating. From this point on it seemed that Hulkamania would go on forever. But this was the begining of the end.

MEGA CARD
Big Movie Fan26 April 2002
To this day I don't think WrestleMania III has been topped. Everything about this card was brilliant. I don't think fans will ever see a card like this. It took place 15 years ago and it is still talked about today.

For starters, the crowd were just amazing. The electricity and energy coming from them was phenomenal. The way they cheered during the Hulk Hogan/Andre the Giant match was brilliant. Before Hogan and Andre had even touched each other the fans were screaming-I am surprised they didn't break all the glass with their screaming!

The matches were just superb. Roddy Piper battled the late Adrian Adonis in an entertaining match. The mysterious and charismatic Jake Roberts-and his python-battled Elvis lookalike The Honky Tonk Man. Ricky Steamboat battled Macho Man in a match still held in high regard today by wrestling experts. And who can forget Hulk Hogan battling the late great Andre the Giant!

The event can be summed up in one word-MEGA! These characters were larger than life. If you were to put the stars of this event in a time machine and put them against today's stars then they would destroy them.

This really was a timeless event which will still be talked about fifty years from now.

Two Main Events!
lipnja0118 January 2001
The main event, possibly the largest in WWF history, featured Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan in a match for the WWF Heavyweight title, that was semi-decent of a match, in my opinion. But, the show stealer had to be the classic that Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat and "Macho Man" Randy Savage put on, with the WWF Intercontinental title on the line. It was a classic battle, with both men showing true resilience, giving it their all in an epic battle, that, in my mind, was better than the main event itself. Ricky Steamboat ended up winning the match, and the WWF Intercontinental Title. That match alone is worth watching Wrestlemania III.

A Classic (historiclly speaking)
jimjam20-25 March 2002
Loved by virtually everyone, this show only has a couple of highlights. The 93,000 fans is truly something speical, and Hogan vs Andre is leagendary (although the match is HORRIBLE). Savage vs Steamboat is a lil overrated, but is still great. Not much else on this one though. The rest of the show is a bunch of weak matches. Still, the first *good* Wrestlemania.

Whoa...
RepoManRules24 May 2003
The thrid best WrestleMania ever only edged out by WrestleMania X and WrestleMania X-7. The Match of the night was of course Ricky Steamboat vs. Randy Savage(It is alos considered the greatest match in North America until 1989 thanks to Steamboat again! He really is a god). Hogan vs. Andre was pretty bad but WHO CARES? This IS the greatest match in North America not because of the star ratings, but because of the magic involved with it because you were hoping Hogan would win.

Highly Recommended!

You Actually Need a Review?
MarkyIce25 July 2002
What are you sitting here reading these reviews for? GET THE TAPE! WM3 was THE moment in WWF history that can never be forgotten. Andre/Hogan is still the biggest match of all time, despite sucking like very few matches could possibly do. Does it matter that the match is bad? No. It's still mark-out moment number 1 for all wrestling fans.

Steamboat/Savage, regarded as the greatest wrestling match of all time until Steamboat/Flair in 1989, is still unbelievable to this day. Intense psychology and crowd interaction make for the WWF's first 5-star PPV classic.

Sure the rest of the matches weren't very good, but who cares? It's Wrestlemania 3!

This was wrestling at its peak. Nothing has come close since. Hulkamania was at its best and it was the Golden Age of Sports Entertainment. See the show, relive the excitement, and understand exactly why Andre/Hogan is the biggest match - ever.
