Stunning photographic effort from Dean Semler

Warning: Spoilers
"A Steam Train Passes" pretty much says it all for this 20 plus minute tribute to New South Wales Government Railways C38 steam locomotive class leader 3801.

We travel along viewing the locomotive and train from all angles, thanks to the matchless photography of Dean Semler. Long shots with the steam laying along the train, close-ups of the driver and fireman hard at work in the cab and shots of the passengers. At the same time we are taken through the years; we see soldiers going off to WW2 when 3801 was brand, spanking new, built at Everleigh Workshops near Sydney. Every clip is a picture worth preserving; you're unlikely to see a finer tribute to Australian steam.

Although not currently available on DVD (to my knowledge), Super 8 sound prints were released in the mid-1970s. I believe there were TWO Super 8 versions available, one with music and one without. Having experienced both - a segment of the music track version has been screened on Australian television - I recommend you avoid it. The steam loco itself produces a far more entertaining sound! 3801, happily, is still in steam and runs regular excursions out of Sydney.
