Very small sample size of votes right now but this film deserves better. In some ways it is fairly typical of a propagandist response to WWI ending with a vilification of the Germans. The plot is very basic and we some goings on in a Flemish town which is then invaded and take over by Germans. And then later, Belgium's army pushes the Germans out.
However, this is cinema taking its lessons from the great film, War is Hell, and the red tint of the battles scenes has them looking like hell itself.
More impressively, this actually, while giving no spoilers, anticipates much of the Neo-realist approach of Rossellini's's classic Open City.
