A Good but Forgotten Children's Show

Hodgepodge Lodge was a nice children's show that ran throughout the early to mid 70s. It was a children's show that focused on nature. It was produced by Maryland Public Television and hosted by Jean Worthley, otherwise known as Miss Jean (who is still alive and well and still teaching nature courses at a nature center in Maryland). Each day, a different topic would be discussed such as animals, plants and appreciation of the outdoors. I used to watch this show on Channel 13 WNET out of New York along with Sesame Street, Mister Rogers Neighborhood, The Electric Company, and Zoom. The theme song was catchy. It went like this: We're off to the forest to see Miss Jean. She lives in a house that is freshly green. Except for the chimney and windows and walls, And one or two places just down the halls. It's filled with rabbits and snakes and snails And fat little puppies keep wagging their tails. There's deer and tigers and elephants too. (Spoken) Well,maybe not elephants. I would like to see glimpses of this show again. I wonder if this show will ever come out on video or DVD. Does anybody else remember this show? I'd like to know.

I remember it well except for Miss Jean's name...was a fun and memorable show to watch as a child in the 70's...always looked forward to watching it along with the other child classics of the era - sesame street, zoom, electric company, Mr. Roger's, big blue marble, etc... It would be neat to find it on DVD for another generation to enjoy. I have told my own children about this particular show several times and finally decided that I just might find it on the internet. One thing that sticks in my mind is the public television feel to it...great natural feel about the subject matters every episode, the country surroundings of the lodge as well as the interior. I was a kid growing up in Milwaukee and longing for such an environment...it fulfilled my childhood soul. Happy to say that now as an adult I am raising my kids in our own little lodge surrounded by the type of nature portrayed on that very show...except for the elephants:)

I did not watch this show with the frequency of Zoom or the Electric Company, but I definitely kept it with me as I grew up. It was kind of a log-cabin, nature show. I know I enjoyed it, and I still sort of remember the intro, which featured a slow crawl through the hodge podge lodge itself.

I really think I want to name my own house "Hodge Podge Lodge," even though it doesn't look too much like a lodge.

There really should be more stuff like this on PBS these days, as kids grow farther and farther away from nature. It's a shame one just can't find much about this show anywhere on line anymore! I've done a lot of Googling, and it seems to exist mainly in some viewers' imaginations!

I remember that show very well! I used to watch it everyday after I got home from school. I watched on WNED, PBS station in Buffalo New York. I always learned something that I didn't know. Miss Jean said it so that I could understand it. She also had kids who were of an age with me. Programs like that are long gone but far from forgotten. I'd also like to see it out on DVD. I think that today's kids need to see more shows like Hodge Podge Lodge. I think producers need to wake up and make more shows like Hodge Podge Lodge-shows that teach kids without using strong language and sexual situations. I know if I had kids and a program like Hodge Podge Lodge were on, I would make sure that they watch it!

I remember the show very well as I was one of the cast members in the first season. I was on 15 shows and my partner was Susan Percy. I actually have one episode of the show on VCR tape that my brother managed to secure when he was at MCPB for another event. Miss Jean was as nice in person as she appeared on TV. I was in the 3rd grade at Timber Grove Elementary in Reisterstown, MD and we would get out of school around 10 in the morning and go to the station to film the show. Several years later while attending camp Kaybeyun in New Hampshire, my brother and his fellow camp councilors saw me on a re-run in 1979 so they used to kid me about it. I was the one in the beginning with white pants and a yellow and orange striped shirt running to the cabin during the theme song.

A True Gem

I absolutely loved this show growing up. Living in Manhattan, it taught me to appreciate nature, the outdoors and kindness. I was so soothed by Jean's voice and although I may be mistaken - I remember her parrot to be named "Aurora". If they brought this show back I would watch it today, forty years later. I wish her well if she is still alive. She was a true gem. It's funny how things happen. I was having a conversation with a group of friends and we were talking about shows that influenced us as children. Hodge Podge Lodge came to mind and I couldn't wait to get home so I could Google the show. I have been watching the YouTube clips of the show and reading about it. I find myself smiling all over again.

Check out YouTube many episodes are there to wake up those old memories! Sweet show. Simple. Peaceful. The most patient TV baby sitter of my childhood.

Watched this show along with zoom, Allegra and Electric company as a child in the 70's on WQED public television in Pittsburgh. Loved it but can vaguely remember it. Glad I'm not the only one. Would love to see footage if anyone has any. I remember it being very educational. Catchy theme song. If anyone has more information on the show or if DVD or video is available I would love to know. this show was truly a real treasure to myself and friends for the short time it was on. they just don't make Public Television shows like they used too. Does anyone else remember Zoom? I would love to see originals of the 1970's version as well.
