Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

Even if you’re a complete novice when it comes to anime, chances are that you’ll have at least heard of the likes of “Ghost in the Shell” and “The Sky Crawlers,” and those films both came from the acclaimed Japanese director Mamoru Oshii. He also directed the 2001 live-action movie “Avalon,” and Oshii is now set to make his first live-action English-language film with “The Last Druid: Garm Wars.” The story is described as taking place in a world of war known as Annwyn, where clone soldiers from three military tribes are locked in a perpetual battle of air, land and technology. One clone, Khara, is separated from the battle and finds herself on the run with a group of unlikely companions, and together they seek to know more about their existence. It sounds to us like a project that could work perfectly in anime form, but Oshii looks...

Well Go USA Entertainment, the distribution company behind “Ip Man”, the upcoming “Ip Man 2,” and “Legend of The Fist,” all starring Donnie Yen, has been hit and miss when it comes to their films. This is a statement that can be said of many companies in the business though. I can’t really knock them for choosing to distribute certain films, as someone has to do it, but I do have to question why I get sent some of this stuff. I mean I couldn’t make these films, and I applaud the effort that went into them, but some of them just leave me wanting more, and some just leave me wishing I hadn’t watched the film at all. The former is the case for the duo of films sent to me recently, “Assault Girls” and “Yoga.” Todd already gave a review of Mamoru Oshii’s “Assault Girls,...

Contrary to even our own guide to what's coming out on video-on-demand and online, rumors of the demise of those shiny discs that still take up shelf space have been greatly exaggerated. Take next week, for example, in which one will only be able to enjoy the guilty pleasure of "Lake Placid 3" or the easy charm of the Adam Scott indie comedy "Passenger Side" on DVD or upgrade to high-definition for the "Alien Quadrilogy" boxed set, a rerelease of the "Back to the Future" trilogy or better yet, Criterion editions of Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" or the Japanese curiosity "Hausu" on Blu-ray. And it's not even December yet.

Fans of heavily armed and armored girls rejoice! Geneon Entertainment Japan has announced to release Assault Girls, Mamoru Oshii’s quasi-sequel to Avalon on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on June 23, 2010 in standard and special collector’s editions. The latter will include a bonus disc with a bunch of promotion material, the ‘prequels’ to Assault Girls, Assault Girl (Oshii’s segment for True Female Tachigui: The Amazing Lives of the Fast Food Grifters, click here to watch) and Assault Girl 2 (taken from the Kiru ~ Kill omnibus), a 92-page storyboard script written by Oshii and an enhanced booklet (16 pages instead of just four).
None of these editions will include English subtitles, but according to some theatrical reviews the films dialogues are all in Eng(l/r)ish anyway. Hopefully our sweet girls had access to better vocal coaches than those cowboys in Takashi Miike’s Sukiyaki Western Django…

Seems like director Mamoru Oshii has regained his love for live-action during his work on his latest film Assault Girls. According to Ann, director of titles Ghost in the Shell, The Sky Crawlers and Avalon revealed in Tokyo during a press conference for Assault Girls that his next film will be a live-action adaptation of Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s classic manga Tetsujin 28 (aka Gigantor).
Imagi Studios are currently working on a CG anime adaptation of the manga named T28, which will (according to IMDb) open in theaters in 2011. Oshii didn’t mention any dates in his announcement, but since he already directed a stage play version of Tetsujin 28-gō featuring a 500kg replica of the giant robot in January I guess we won’t have to wait too long.

Babes! Guns! Monsters!
When you look at what output of Mamoru Oshii actually has reached English-speaking territories the last few years, you'd be forgiven for thinking him to be only making dark, brooding films.
Yet when you look at his eighties' work for Japanese television and the OVAs he created then, you see another Oshii entirely: one that juggles entertainment, high concepts, silly jokes and fan-service (both of the lewd and the mecha variety) with ease. And more recently his "Amazing Life of the Fast Food Grifters" was basically one big collection of jokes.
Enter his new film: "Assault Girls", which manages to be a combination of both the broody Oshii and the fun-lovin' fan-servicin' Oshii. On the one hand we have three damn cute women hunting huge sandworm-like monsters, with both the women and the monsters sporting some very large cannons. On the other hand this takes place in...

Teaser trailer for the psychological drama movie The Artifice
"Imagine if you had the ability to see every tiny connection, every movement, every decision, every concept, and every consequence. Would you embrace this gift or try to hide it would you be able to use it without effect or would this knowledge change your life forever?"
Stylistically the promo reminds me of Jamin Winans' Ink and Tony Krantz's Sublime, mixed with a touch of Mamoru Oshii's Avalon. We don't have a lot more info on this project other than it's gained nearly a million fans on facebook on the strength of the intrigue created by the promo, but the crew behind it is going to send further details over.

Twitch’s Todd has posted a first (?) poster artwork and a full synopsis for Mamoru Oshii’s Assault Girls that will open in Japan on December 19th.
The story takes place in an in-game virtual space called “Avalon”, a barren desert-like battlefield, resembling a devastated world after a nuclear war. “Avalon” is a world full of gigantic monsters. It is a fictional world where an endless “hunt”, known as “play”, repeatedly takes place. The drama centers around a sniper who pilots a camouflage fighter plane; a sorcerer who can freely transform herself; a woman fighter equipped with an assault rifle on a horseback; and a large-framed man equipped with an anti-tank rifle. There is also the “Game Master” who watches the players from the air.

From Mamoru Oshii, the well-known and respected Japanese director of “Avalon” and the “Ghost in the Shell” franchise comes what I can only assume is a get-rich quick scheme to pay off a house note or two, ala “Assault Girls”. It’s like Frank Herbert’s “Dune”, except with Japanese chicks with assault rifles. In the aftermath of global thermonuclear war, the Earth’s surface has been turned into a desert battlefield. Three beautiful female hunters: Gray (Meisa Kuroki), Lucifer (Rinko Kikuchi), and Colonel (Hinako Saeki) traverse the barren landscape armed with powerful assault rifles to fight a group of deadly sand-dwelling monsters called “sunakujira” (sand whales). When the the epic battle eventually seems to be coming to an end, the sparkle of muzzle flash dies down and assault ship flies overhead. Suddenly, a gigantic super mutation called “Madara Sunakujira” attacks. The girls and their spiffy mega guns hit Japanese...

Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell wowed us all with its seamlessly merging of traditional animation with the latest CG imagery to create an intelligent and artistic sci-fi spectacle unlike anything seen before. The film enjoyed both critical and popular acclaim at the international box office before going on to reach even greater success on DVD. Now, director Oshii (The Sky Crawlers; Avalon) has revisited his classic masterpiece to create a newly enhanced "director's cut" for cinemas in the form of Ghost in the Shell 2.0.

The full length follow up to his recent short film Assault Girl 2 and first live action feature since Avalon, the first trailer has just arrived for Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii’s Assault Girls. It doesn’t show much and what it does show has a curiously washed out effect - having seen Assault Girl 2 I can tell you that the post production effect he lays on the visuals here looks much better in proper resolution - but new Oshii is always a major event, even relatively low-budget, quick production cycle Oshii like this. Yesterday we brought word of the awesome sounding upcoming scifi project by Avalon director Mamoru Oshii called Assault Girls. Set in a futuristic desert battlefield where Dune-like female warriors fight giant sand worms, the project sounds like an immediate must-see.
Well if you're like us, and can't wait to get a taste of what Oshii's cooking up for us in his cyberpunk kitchen then be sure to watch his first short from the series, Assault Girl: Kentucky no Hinako right here on Quiet Earth! A segment in Oshii's 2007 omnibus movie, "Shin Onna Tachiguishi Retsuden," it's the first of three Assault girl shorts that are the basis for his upcoming feature.
Just image a feature version of this but even more ambitious and visually arresting. It truly melts the mind. Big ups to our boy Avery for the tip off.

Oshii's first live action film after the excellent Avalon, this is the third film with the "assault girl" theme. The first, titled "Assault Girl: Kentucky no Hinako," was a segment in Oshii's 2007 omnibus movie "Shin Onna Tachiguishi Retsuden" and starred Saeki. The second, "Assault GIRL2," was part of last year's "Kiru ~ Kill" omnibus and starred Kikuchi. We only have one still which you can see on the right, and it sounds utterly incredible:

Titled Assault Girls , the movie stars Oscar-nominated Rinko Kikuchi ( Babel ), Meisa Kuroki and Hinako Saeki as hunters in a desert landscape in a post-apocalyptic world. Ann has posted some new/first details for Mamoru Oshii’s upcoming live-action film Assault Girls. According to Hollywood Channel and Cinema Today, the long version of Oshii’s Assault Girl 2 short from the Kiru ~ Kill omnibus will open in Japan on December 19th. The film is set on a desert planet that has been devastated by giant monsters called Suna Kujira (sand whales). For reasons yet unknown, three female hunters played by Meisa Kuroki, Rinko Kikuchi and Hinako Saeki visit the planet to hunt down the most dangerous sand whale there is, the Madara Suna Kujira (spotted sand whale) using assault rifles and other weapons.

At this point in his career, director Mamoru Oshii has established a signature mood of detached, autumnal melancholy, which predominates over his films regardless of their genre, and no matter whether they’re live-action (Avalon, Stray Dog) or anime (both Ghost In The Shell movies, the first two Patlabor films). The same holds true for the science-fiction/alternate-world period piece The Sky Crawlers: It’s packed with grueling aerial combat and life-or-death situations, not to mention sex and killing, and yet the entire film feels like a slow, sleepy summer daydream. Oshii’s love of long takes, drifting clouds in ...

I've been a big fan of Mamoru Oshii's work for a long time. From the groundbreaking anime Ghost in the Shell to his live-action sci-fi drama Avalon, Oshii epitomizes "cool" from word go. Nothing, I say nothing, however, prepared me for the brilliance that is Kiru (aka Kill), his latest live-action project. Have you ever watched a movie and all you wanted to do is to skip to the big climax at the end? Screw plot, exposition, character developments and all of that junk. Oshii's Kill is an anthology project that is basically four Third Acts of movies that don't exist. So you get to watch four awesome action scenes without having to sit through the one hour of bla-bla-revenge-betrayal-bla that led to said awesome action scenes.
