Alex North, a well-respected Hollywood composer, created the film's underscore music soundtrack. However, despite rumors to the contrary, a recording of the original score was apparently never released and has become a much-sought-after collectible over the years in the hopes a copy might surface. As of this writing, 4/20/12, no verifiable copy has ever been found.
In 1973 Ford updated the last portion of this film by inserting new color footage for the modern section while retaining the original 1953 soundtrack.
