Geddit?

Warning: Spoilers
When I first heard the expression "Mary, Kate and Ashley Olsen" I assumed it referred to three people rather than two; I had some vague idea that Mary and Kate were twin sisters and Ashley their brother. My error was, in fact, corrected pretty quickly. I had, of course, failed to reckon with two aspects of the American naming system which generally strike us Brits as a bit eccentric, their fondness for hyphenated Christian names and for converting perfectly good male names into female ones. So "Mary-Kate" turned out to be one person rather than two and "Ashley" a girl rather than a boy.

You couldn't go anywhere in the late 1990s or early 2000s without coming across some reference to the Olsen Twins. They quickly became a major element of the popular culture of the period. Every month seemed to bring some new film or television programme featuring them, although their dominance was to be a fairly brief one. They retired from acting in 2004 when they were only eighteen. They have, however, remained in the public eye because of their new career as fashion designers and their younger sister Elizabeth has now become an actress in her own right.

In "Our Lips Are Sealed", made when they were fourteen, the twins play Maddie and Abby Parker, twin sisters who witness a jewel robbery in which the priceless Kneel Diamond (Neil Diamond, geddit?) is stolen. Their evidence is vital in getting the robber convicted, but as the man's uncle is a notorious gangster from the Eastern European nation of Urugli (You're ugly, geddit?) the girls and their family are placed in the FBI's Witness Protection Programme. Unfortunately, Maddie and Abby's lips are far from sealed. They are such blabbermouths that they keep on revealing the family's secret, with the result that the FBI have to keep moving them until they end up in Sydney, Australia. The rest of the film deals with the girls' attempts to fit into their new school, a surfing contest and their outwitting of the two assassins who have been sent by the gangster to hunt them down.

The film's attempts at verbal humour are pretty crude; besides the examples quoted above the notorious Uruglian gangster has the surname Hatchew, which leads to endless "Bless you!" jokes. (Atchoo, geddit?) American preconceptions about Australia (which seem to be much the same as British ones) are another fertile source of humour. Apparently all Australians spend most of their time on the beach, love surfing, keep a kangaroo as a pet and live on a staple diet of Vegemite. They also speak a bizarre and incomprehensible dialect, although some of the words which baffle Maddie and Abby (such as "jumper" for "sweater") are also in common usage in Britain. Oh, and all Aussie girls are called Sheila. (I think we in Britain stopped telling that joke some time in the seventies. There was a related joke about all Aussie men being called Bruce).

A comedy which relies upon bad puns and ethnic stereotypes to get laughs does not seem very promising, but actually I ended up rather enjoying "Our Lips Are Sealed", even though I am (and was even in 2000) far from being a member of the demographic at which the film was clearly aimed. The reason is that the Olsen girls were such natural little performers. Their screen persona was that of smart, sassy youngsters who are always one step ahead of everyone else, be it their parents, the bad guys or the so-called "popular girl" at their new school. (The film transfers to Australia the standard American cliché that every high school is dominated by a bitchy, snobbish clique of "popular girls" whose popularity owes everything to their good looks and their families' wealth and nothing to their personalities, which are invariably obnoxious). They frequently break the "fourth wall" to speak direct to camera, and it is not always clear whether they are doing so as the Parker sisters or as the Olsen sisters.

It is easy to understand why the twins' acting career did not survive their entry into womanhood; they had become too closely identified with childhood and adolescence for anyone to envisage them as adult performers. Other former child stars, notably Shirley Temple, have fallen into the trap of trying to extend their careers past their sell- by date, so Mary-Kate and Ashley were perhaps wise to move into new ventures. This film, however, reveals how entertaining they could be in their heyday. 6/10

5. They go to that theme park + somehow happen to ride a roller-coaster with no-one actually controlling it. They should be still on that ride NOW. Or dead. Im not sure.

UM. EXCUSE ME! CHECK YOUR FACTS AT THE DOOR

It's obvious (since both twin couples are in the front seats) that they obviously took turns on the roller-coaster. This is further proved by the ferris wheel scene, which demonstrates the male twins' comprehensive knowledge of ride operation.

In other news, the film's good.

I love the twins. Twin twins. It's like rule 63 MK & Ash.

Also: I think they only had one shot of the kangaroo.

It was deec. Not so much a film as it is a collection of moving images synced with audio.

Warning: Spoilers
This movie was an okay movie...However if you are Austrlalian then i suggest you boycott it. If however you are from a country other than Australia you might a least enjoy a tiny weeny bit of it.

I would just like to clear a few things up! first of all not all people here are not called SHEILA!!!!! I don't even know anybody called Sheila!

second we don't all speak that weirdo lingo that i can't even understand

third of all kangaroos don't just hop around in the city, I've never even seen a kangaroo in the wild!

So if you like MK/A and your Not Australian Go for it! But if you are well a least they tried!

As far as olsen films go, this one was really good. The film wasnt 100% about the girls and did well because of it. The acting was good in this film and the plot, though weak, was very entertaining. The twins excel in this film and deliver very charming, likable performances. They should definatly do more films like this one.

The actors who really make this film worth watching though, are those who play the two crooks after the girls. They are hilarious! It is really refreshing in an olsen film for someone else to get the good lines.

Apart from that the girls also didnt kiss a boy *gasp*, they didnt go shopping and they didnt use any of their silly teenage lines. They also didnt seem to be as full of themselves as they usually come across as on screen which really helped this film. All round this is a cute film, with cute characters and a cute plot. It may not be the best film ever made but its still very enjoyable and can be very funny at times.I recommend it for kids and any Olsen fans!

I'm Aussie and I hate this movie
Liana89722 September 2013
Okay, so the beginning of the movie was okay, until they got to Australia. I can see every Australian cringing at this movie in total embarrassment. I was embarrassed watching this movie. The only good thing about this movie is that it was filmed at my school!! Also Aubrey and Pete were hot.

6 things wrong with this movie: 1.We DO NOT speak like that. At All. I don't even know half the stuff they said. I hate these stereotypes imposed on us aussies. It disgusting. 2.On top of the stupid slang, we do not speak with those accents. I cringe every time I hear them speak. I feel bad for the Aussie actors who had to speak like that. 3.There is no one called Sheila in Australia. Its a weird name and I know no one called Sheila. Sheila actually means woman. Why would anyone be called that? It's like American's calling girls Shawty. 4.The "vegemite" that one of the twins was eating was clearly NOT vegemite. That was obviously nutella. 5.We do not spend every living second on the beach and there are certainly no groups who think they own the beach. That's just stupid 6.We do not have kangaroos as pets zoo. 7.No one plays with boomerangs either. And no one can throw it anyway.

Warning: Spoilers
Oh my days. I felt like gouging my eyeballs out and attacking the person who inflicted this movie on me. It takes Mary-Kate and Ashley to an all time low. Heres why:

1. What is with all of the Australian stereotypes? 'Subtitles please.' They wouldn't need subtitles if they had had the poor Australians talking like they usually do! Oh and the kangaroo pet. Isn't that illegal? Now i cant really speak for everyone but I'm sure at like 15 most people know what a boomerang is!

'Dude your frisbee is broken' DUDE SHUT UP!

2. Why, after the first time they had to move did they not shut the hell up?! Oh come on. If my family were at risk i would learn to shut up - it's not that hard.

3. Emmil Hatchu or whatever the 'bad guys' name was. What was with him?! He just generally annoyed me. He needed to get back to that Urugli place of his.

4. The twins end up living in a B&B (that's dead popular and has what two guests the whole time the film is dragging on). So where the hell did they get the equipment to make that dodgy trap thing that inflicted Victoria to a lot of humiliation. I mean she got covered in feathers for goodness sake?!

5. They go to that theme park + somehow happen to ride a roller-coaster with no-one actually controlling it. They should be still on that ride NOW. Or dead. Im not sure.

6. There were bits that I'm guessing were supposed to be funny and turn this movie into a light-hearted comedy. But the thing was: no matter how hard those bits tried to be funny, they weren't. I got more laughs out of laughing at that cancer-stick-obsessed mum of theirs whose mouth was like the Mersey Tunnel.

7. Those two robber guys at the start, you know, the ones who knicked the diamond in the first place? Yeah those guys. Errm, why the hell did a minute squirt of ketchup manage to knock him down? I know it's supposed to be funny. But its not. Maybe I'm too old for this film, but hey I'm only 15. And when i first watched it i was like 10 and i didn't find it funny then.

Enough said.

Yes, The worst movie I have ever seen so far
RorrohFiendhugger5 January 2004
I'll admit I have no taste, heck, I don't mind a britney spears song every now and then, but this was the worst movie I've ever seen. The whole story was paper thin, everything was SO Hollywood-perfect-happy-family-ish, maybe best described as a girls bouquet (you know those little books that women tend to read), mixed with some kids movie and a home alone scene. It isn't until the "cool" people start dancing, that you understand why this movie was rated "comedy". Don't waste your money or your download limit on this, unless you have a serious hard-on for the Olsen twins.

The movie that started it all. . .
Zalis26 February 2002
I had known who Mary-Kate & Ashley were since the Full house days. . .I knew they had some videos and movies, but when I saw this film on Fox Family in November, I decided that their movies were worth a look. After seeing a few, "Our Lips are Sealed" remains one of the better ones. It's got some action, some decent lines, and an endearing "clean" quality to it. You see, I'm a 20 year old male, and I've seen my share of sexy & violent movies. It's nice to see that some people still want to make G-rated movies. However, it's not exactly a "great" movie. . .if you're older than the twins, there's several "eye-roller" moments, and there's not a whole lot of effort to differentiate the girls. If you are a MK & A fan, I'd recommend the DVD, because it has commentary from the girls and other cool features.

Fistful of crap
zwerr31 December 2004
As I had nothing better to do on 31st of December, in 12:00 PM, I decided to watch a film on television. I thought, well, nothing can be worse than sitting and watching empty wall, or just lying in bed. However, I was wrong. I never watched any of movies with this two girls, and I was not aware of this infinite horror. First two very young chicks catch a criminal and he ends up in prison, alright I said, Americans do a lot of movies with infant heroes. But clichés that followed were to terrible to suffer. Or incredible stupidity of two main characters. I mean when 14 year old kid in witness protection program asks another kid: "Why can't we tell everybody about that?"; she wanted to jeopardize her family and herself only to impress an ugly, stupid boy, who is supposed to be "cute". Terrible. End of course the trap for criminals, which didn't held off ordinary girl but just coloured her and stick feathers to her face. That is why I was sorry to give grade 1 to this film, I think this film earns a steady minus 7, positive numbers can't bear this shame. This film should also have a parental advisory ticket stick to it, and should not be "on air" before midnight, for it can destroy fragile young minds and turn them in shapeless masses of gray and white matter. And of course there is question how the director and actors could have borne such a shame of making and acting in this movie. A piece of s**t, that's what it is!

Teenagers movie
alessior9 April 2004
It's a teenagers spy-story movie but good for all ages.

The movie is filmed in Australia and the Olsen twin-sisters are, as always, funny & cute.

The story is around two US sisters (Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen) participating in the FBI "witness protection program" because of problems with a criminal gang.

FBI move Ashley, Mary-Kate and their family to Sidney (Australia) to protect them. There the girlies met new friends and have a lot of fun.

Funny gangsters, sea, sun & surf! This movie is good to be seen in a raining Sunday afternoon.

Appalling drivel
harry-9023 April 2008
This film is excruciatingly bad. It's like an episode of Seinfeld without the wit - it's about NOTHING. Avoid this turkey at all costs. The badly written Australian dialogue is so bad that it travels beyond bad. The infantile "storyline" (for want of another word) is so inane that even an average writer would have trouble writing it. The comedy is NOT funny - which is a bit of a drawback for comedy. And the endless shots of prepubescent teens wandering aimlessly about beaches beggars belief. The direction is non existent - need I go on?? Everything about this is EVIL. Who financed this turkey? I know the Olsens have a following of some kind but this drivel is an insult to the intelligence of even the most devoted fan.

Beautiful, just beautiful.
ihurtmywidgie8 July 2011
After taking the time out my busy schedule to check out some of the reviews for my all-time favorite movie, I was utterly shocked and upset to find that it had such a low rating! This is a flawlessly produced movie consisting of love, heartbreak, horror, action, and dancing. I can't think of any other movie that contains all of these elements that also keeps the audience entertained throughout the entire movie. It was a truly original story where two sisters along with their family are put into the witness protection program after gunning down a criminal with a bottle of ketchup (LOL!) I thought it was very realistic how the girls kept blabbing about why they had moved to all the different towns. Who can count on teenage girls to keep a secret anyway? Their representation of Australia seemed very accurate and it really makes me want to visit there! They all seem so friendly! Except for that retched Victoria! If I ever see her, I'll sure give her a piece of my mind! My favorite part of the movie was during the surf war! It was exciting, definitely a nail-biter. I love when the boy hurts his widgie. It's hard to tell what he is referring to his widgie at first but then I realized what he meant. That is one of my favorite lines of any movie if you couldn't tell by my user-name! Overall, this is an excellent film. Perfectly scripted, and amazing in every way. I recommend it to EVERYONE!!

I can't say that I didn't enjoy it
MystiqueStorm2 April 2003
Warning: Spoilers
The story was their typical one: the girls go off to some foreign place for whatever reason (London, Paris, Rome, the Caribbean), in this case it was Australia, they meet some very cute boys-Pete and Avery (as usual Pete fell for one twin and Avery the other. Wouldn't it be great to see the twins fall for one guy? Or both guys fall for one of the girls?), and their main priorities in life are clothes, lip gloss, great hair, being popular, and having boyfriends, not necessarily in that order. But as far as most Mary-Kate and Ashley movies go this one was pretty good! (Some spoilers within, but nothing you couldn't figure out from knowing it's an Olsen twin film)

The reason the Parker family goes to Australia under the alias of Turtleby is simple- the girls witnessed a crime (actually they saw the man who stole the precious Neil Diamond running out of the museum, they did not actually see him steal it, but still) and they have such a hard time keeping their mouths shut that they've lived all over the United States and now they are all out of places in America so they have to go to the last place on earth-Australia!

Aussie life is seems great to them, hanging out on the beach, beach parties, cute surfer boys, great shopping, but unfortunately to have a good time they think that forever reason they need to get into the posse led by Victoria, they try a number of things to get in- speaking the Australian way, avoiding the 'geeks,' the 'surfies,' the 'nerds,' etc, surfing, eating Australian food, and more. All seems lost as the 'royal court' loved Abby and Maddie, but the 'queen' still needed some convincing--but only until the smashed a soda can on their head were they admitted in. Once in they have a terrific time hanging out on the beach, and Victoria's father's yacht, with the popular kids. But then they meet two extremely hot guys whom are not in the posse that they are in but rather the group called the surfies. The leader of the posse, Victoria, tells them "hang with them and you can forget about the party, and everything that goes with it." (They then literally run into them when they get freaked out, and they go to Lunar Park together, which is closed but that's okay because Avery's dad owns the place) They go to the yacht party only to find Avery and Pete (the hot guys, remember?) show up and agree with the leaders of the posse to have a surf-off whoever wins keeps the beach, and the loser moves down somewhere (but not after a little flirting with Abby and Maddie across the boat :)). The boys then leave and everyone else goes back to the party, a few minutes later Maddie shows Abby that Pete and Avery are down on the water with wave-runners, summoning to them to come with them of course. Abby says absolutely not. Her reasoning? "These are my new boots!" They end up just leaving the shoes on the yacht and sailing off with the guys (Abby with Avery, Maddie with Pete, in case you were wondering), after all "they were ugly anyway." The twins then get asked out and everything in Australian life is going just perfectly until two suspicious guests show up at The Salvation Shore Inn, that's their house. Who are working for Emil Hatchew, the guy who is trying to catch them. Will they make it out alive, and more importantly, with their boyfriends? Tune in for yourself! :D

Not Bad for a Mary Kate & Ashley film
caspian19781 January 2001
I couldn't believe it....this has to be the first Mary Kate & Ashley film that the whole family can not only watch together but also enjoy. A wonderful family story with excellent direction, Our Lips Are Sealed is about twin sisters who are re-located after seeing something they shouldn't have.

Long story short it remains a Mary Kate & Ashley film, but it's the best one so far!

I love the Olsen twins movies they are very entertaining and adorable! each and every one of their films is in some way has got the same sort of story line, like go on vacation, meet boys and then it is all love and romance and thats why people hate them so much, but that is why i like them! i think that olsen twins movies are for girls to be honest so if your a girl and want a little comedy and entertainment i would suggest any olsen twin film because they are all equally brilliant! my favourite is The Challenge and Our lips are sealed! please watch i give it 9/10.

The pain, the horror, Aaaggrrhhh !!!!
Rokol3 January 2005
I've had the absolute misfortune to come across some of the Olsen twin movies, and I am now scarred for live. Recently I saw 'Our lips are sealed'. If there is an explanation how to describe this piece of trash, let me give it a try. Try to imagine crossing the street and getting hit by 40 ton truck, and all your body parts are flying through the air. Or better yet getting tortured with a torch blower for 90 minutes. After seeing this movie I felt dumber, insulted and sh*tty. I voted this movie 3, so I know that I can't remember it by seeing it on IMDb with a grade 1. Avoid this porker at all cost, even if your life is depending on it.

I hope the middle east doesn't discover this film, to receive information from captured militants.

Cute and Funny but Cheesy
KatherinePetersdorf30 June 2013
I liked it, it was a good movie with tons of laughs, however it wasn't a great movie.

Positives of the Movie The Movie Had an Interesting Plot Line (The Witness Protection Part) It was Funny The Cute Boys The Fun Filming Location The Great Clothing

Negatives for the Movie -The item stolen -The Country the bad guys came from

The movie was a little bit cheesy. Kind of like when they talked to the audience and froze time.

I would still say to people that they should watch it, especially if they are very young.

Some of you are far too negative.
yfqytxx8 June 2021
This was my favorite movie growing up. I loved MK & A movies, but especially this one. You guys are forgetting that these movies are for little girls. I always knew that the movies had common themes and were very unrealistic, but so are most children's movies. I was the little girl who liked barbie dolls and tea parties, so of course I loved the movies about twins who always get the cute boys. Bottom line, these films were not made for adults or critics. Sure, looking back, there are things that could have been done better. But this was the early 2000s and they are children making dumb movies for other children. Not all children's movies have to have a ton of substance. This movie is lighthearted and cute.

This was bad.
book addict17 April 2003
All you MK&A fans out there, please accept the facts: the twins' movies are mindless pieces of junk. They go to some exotic location, meet some *cough* 'hot' boys, (MK falls in love with one, A falls in love with the other, and surprise surprise, both boys fall in love with the right one - that's not always how love is) some big problem arises separating the poor girls from their loves (big deal - they'll have brand-new boyfriends next movie), MK&A solve the problem (WOW, never saw that coming) and become the 'hot' guys' girlfriends. They were cute when they were younger, but now they're teens, they've lost the cute twin thing, and their lack of talent is revealed. They even tried to make a movie about turning sixteen. Oh, and they made dolls strung around that flimsy theme. Millions of people turn sixteen every day. Mary Kate and Ashley are nothing special... And the sad truth is that they're not all that attractive.

I liked it !
xhailiexskx5 August 2009
I liked this movie even though I think I'm the only one in my crew that actually did. It was fun, and a good MKA movie. You can just relax and enjoy it. It's funny. Ryan Clark and Scott Swalwell did an amazing job. I think every teenage girl was falling for either one of them in the movie. My choice was Ryan and my sister went for Scott. Anyhow, the cast was great picked ! The only thing I didn't actually like was the beginning because it seemed as an old movie and old movies do not really attract teenagers.

But all in all- it was a fun one ! I recommend it to all of those who just want to chill and enjoy.

This movie was not the greatest olsen movie which happens to be it takes two but that just my opinion but anyway this move seemed dry at times with nothing much happeing at all i would have thought they would of had the bad guys on there back a bit more but instead they were doing the usual stuff like hooking up with cute guys and getting into a popular crowd of people but at this point in there careers thay are starting to grow up. I would give this 6 out of 10

My Opinion About An Excellent Movie!
rickrick19644 May 2002
This movie is another excellent choice for any MK&A fan to purchase/watch because it is funny, entertaining and has some very good morals & lessons to teach to the younger generations in the world! I highly recommend this movie/video especially to anyone who hasn't seen it yet (if you have seen it then you already know how truly awesome it is)! Buy it and you'll see what I mean! Of course; I'm a huge MK&A fan, so maybe I'm a little biased here -lol- but if you buy this one you won't be sorry! I promise! It's a real keeper! Sincerely, Rick Morris :-)

One of the Olsens' better movies...
FurBallsUnite26 June 2006
First and foremost, I feel that this movie must be judged against other Olsen Twins movies, not against major blockbusters; hence the 10 rating. When looked at from this perspective, this is actually one of the better Olsen Twins movies out there, if not the best. In essence, I feel that even a non-"MKA" fan could watch this and possibly enjoy it. The girls speak into the camera several times and don't take themselves seriously. Also, the other actors in the movie actually have some talent. The comedy in this flick is lighthearted and cute; for example, the enemies are from a fictional Eastern European country called "Urugly," which is pronounced like "Yer Ugly." Overall, I enjoyed this MKA flick much more than the others. I would recommend it to younger people and someone who's looking for a light-hearted comedy for the family. Trust me, it's not as cheesy and pointless as most other Olsen Twins flicks. It's also probably something males and adults could watch without getting sick from the "girliness overload." No, this movie is not the next "Titanic" or "Ben-Hur." However, it is a cute flick worth watching.

P.S. - This movie would probably be unbearable for Australians to view due to all the stereotypes and overdone "Crocodile Dundee' accents. If you are Australian or are close to any Australians, this would probably be a movie to avoid. My Australian fiancé would probably die of shock if I showed him this flick and told him that I loved it...
