Do You Believe in Miracles? The Story of the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team (TV Movie 2001) Poster

Liev Schreiber: Self - Narrator

Quotes

  • Self - Narrator : America. For many, it is a word that conjures up images of a land of miracles where anything is possible, but that's not how it was in much of the 1970s when a darkness seemed to hang over the nation. There was Kent State, and final defeat in Vietnam. There was Watergate, and Three Mile Island. There were long lines at the gas station, exorbitant interest rates at the bank, and at the end of the decade, an overwhelming image, signifying just how powerless we had become. No one could know that it would be, of all things, a hockey game, played by 20 American kids filled with optimism and determination, that would rejuvenate the American spirit, and become a symbol of national pride. No one could know how important one game could possibly be to a nation that seemed to be losing its way. Certainly not in 1979, when a weary America heard from its embattled leader, who told us we were a nation in crisis.

  • Self - Narrator : As the nation continued celebrating, for the hockey team, it wasn't over yet.

Al Michaels : People always forget that the U.S. had to win another game on Sunday.

Self (Boston Globe) : It was still possible if the Americans did not beat the Finns, they not only would not win the gold. They wouldn't win any medal at all, and Herb understood this.

Self (Captain, USA 1980) : We were excited. We were anxious. We couldn't wait to get out and play, and Herb Brooks walked in to the locker room, and he looked at us and he said, "If you lose this game, you'll take it to your fucking grave." Then he stopped, and he walked a couple of steps, turned and looked at us again, and said, "Your fucking grave."
