This really shouldn't be seen expecting a Wong Kar Wai film. What it is a collage, edited in the ordinary way. He made it as inspiration for his "Mood, Love" project, one of my favorite films.

The collage is of long gone Chinese actresses: clips of them. I suspect from what he has said, that most are Hong Kong films. A Chinese cineliterate would know all the source films, of course. I did not know any. But its still a great little short. I'm lucky enough to see it more than a year after last seeing "Mood," and I think the distance gives this greater power. You can see his reference. You can see how his urges are shaped. And dressed.

Ted's Evaluation -- 3 of 3: Worth watching.

Only good if you know the films or love the music/singer

Warning: Spoilers
"Hua yang de nian hua" is a 3-minute live action film from 2000, so it had its 15th anniversary last year and the director here is Kar-Wai Wong. It was not from early in his career or late, pretty much in the middle from today's perspective. It is a really short film and it is also nothing that comes from Wong himself as I read it's a collection put together from several fairly famous movies. The music is Asian too, no surprise here. But you don't really need to understand the music to get the spirit. Sadly, it's tough however to care for this film if you don't know any of the films in here, as in my case. That's why I give it a thumbs-down overall and I only recommend it to huge fans of Asian cinema as they can probably make some nice connections here.
