"Evil Demon Golfball from Hell" is an 8-minute black-and-white short film from 20 years ago. It is the first effort as writer and director by Rian Johnson, at that point in his early 20s. Johnson rose to fame since then for "Brick", "Looper", "Breaking Bad" and he will be the one directing the next "Star Wars" film as well. His work here is nothing really outstanding, but it is solid taking into account his age and that he was pretty much a rookie at this point. The title already describes what to expect and that is exactly it: a campy little horror comedy film, in which a truly persistent golf ball manages to drive a fully-grown man crazy. It's an okay watch at under 10 minutes, but really not too memorable at all, so you will not be missing anything either if you decide to skip this one. Johnson truly stepped things up after his work here. That much is safe.

Film school nostalgia

I went to school with the Steve Yedlin and Rhian Johnson, the filmmakers, and it was great to see this project come together over the course of a semester. This 16mm B/W short is full of very funny moments. The camera work and editing are ingenious and something to marvel at, especially given the fact that the project was made on a practically non-existent budget in film school.

This short film changed my life. I connected with it on the deepest spiritual level. This has inspired me to start a career in sports equipment witchcraft. This noble line of work led me to meet my husband, John (short for Nigel) who is a hockey puck from Peru. His work specializes in dance shoe curses. I watch this at midnight on every full moon, or when I want to show a piece of cinematic mastery to my pals or rather my clients, for I have no friends. I truly recommend this piece of work to everyone. I am overjoyed that Rian Johnson is finally getting the respect he deserves and gets to direct the new Star Wars movie. I'm sure it took only one look at this piece of film history to help them make this decision

this is a short ,amazing movie about a golf-ball who pays revenge to the murder of his owner. full 8 minutes without a word. and this is quite good in this movie. the amazing idea of a golf-ball with a character entertains you very good. its the best short-movie i have ever seen.

Before Rian Johnson became either the most hated or most loved filmmakers in his contribution to the Star Wars sequel trilogy (depending on your own personal opinion) he began with short independent films that are themselves quite interesting. "Evil Demon Golf Ball from Hell!!!" is his second attempt in filmmaking that I know of, apparently made in film school - presumably during college. Compared to "Ninja Ko, the Origami Master" (his first short film) this eight-minute movie works very well. The plot is weird and strange but solidly told with some very good editing, acting and direction; while lacking in dialogue, it manages to be pretty effective. An interesting curiosity piece Johnson might laugh at seeing it today, but very good considering the lack of a real budget.
The story is about a robber who breaks into the house of a wealthy man and apparently kills him. The man's golf ball then takes on a variety of supernatural powers that give it life, so that it begins to taunt and plague the man wherever he goes. This all leads up to a very interesting and dark finale, which is very well-executed.
The story is definitely very odd, but pretty original and it works for an eight-minute film. Well made, and definitely darker and more serious given the black-and-white picture. Whereas "Ninja Ko" was just a silly home movie video Johnson made just to entertain him and his friends, this one is nicely crafted and no doubt earned an A grade in film school because of it. Worth seeing certainly.
