Searching round online for "alt cuts" of movies,I was startled to find that the still controversial Rape-Revenge Horror I Spit on Your Grave had been remade in Turkey.Reading up what little info I could find out about the movie,I was surprised to find out, that with the at the time,ultra-conservative military government of Turkey burning the negatives of any film that featured nudity, this film had somehow been saved from the burning, and had thankfully been stopped from being permanently destroyed.
The plot:
Heading on their way to commit a robbery,a gang of thieves/real estate agents car suddenly runs out of fuel.Searching for a safe place to spend the night, the gang quickly find a farmhouse run by a father and his daughter (Zerrin) who "welcome any guest" to stay at their house.Getting set to leave the farmhouse the next day,the robbers decide to give the kind father and his daughter a generous present,by killing the father and viscously raping his daughter.Initially thinking about committing suicide, the daughter eventually decides that she will avenge what the gang did to her and her dad,by murdering each of them one by one.
View on the film:
Keeping the movie at a brisk 59 minute running time, screenwriter Recep Filiz has the plot move at a very fast pace,by having the entire set up of the film take place in the first 10 minutes.Although the screenplay does not give the character's that much detail,Filiz does give Zerrin's (played by the cute Zerrin Dogan) a terrific episodic feel as her revenge attacks increase in viciousness.Unexpectedly showing signs of being ahead of his time,by deciding to remake a film that was hardly known about at the time, director Naki Yurter, (who along with getting arrested in 1980 for making "erotic" movies,is also credited as the Turkish director who still holds the record for directing the most Turkish movies in one year, but sadly ended up penniless, and dying in 1992 age 44) shows a real voyeuristic relish for his leading actress,by having the camera shoot "upwards" towards Dogan.Along with the voyeuristic side,Yurter shows plenty of skill in staging enjoyably sharp revenge attacks, which make this a Rape-Revenge movie that defiantly deserves to fight another day.
