SVoD giant mark first company acquisition with purchase of comic book publisher.
Netflix has marked its first ever compnay acquisition by buying Millarworld, the publishing outfit founded by Mark Millar, who created the Kingsman and Kick-Ass franchises.
Millarworld will continue to create new character franchises and evolve its current properties through feature films and series, which will exclusively be available to Netflix subscribers.
“As creator and re-inventor of some of the most memorable stories and characters in recent history, ranging from Marvel’s The Avengers to Millarworld’s Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wanted and Reborn franchises, Mark is as close as you can get to a modern day Stan Lee,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “We can’t wait to harness the creative power of Millarworld to Netflix and start a new era in global storytelling.”

With cinemas being crowded by more superhero movies than ever before, it can become exceedingly difficult for moviegoers to choose their favorites – or easier for some. The latter appears to be the case for Mark Millar, the man who wrote the comic book miniseries that served as inspiration for Captain America: Civil War.
Having been one of the most celebrated comic book writers of the 21st century, Millar has had the Midas Touch when working for both Marvel and DC. Not only did he write the aforementioned crossover that was loosely adapted to one of 2016’s biggest feature films, but he reinvented the wheel with his run on Ultimate X-Men and bedazzled readers with an alternate take on the Man of Steel in Superman: Red Son. Not only that, a little story called Kick-Ass happens to be his brainchild as well. Perhaps you’ve heard of it?

20th Century Fox has hired Aron Coleite to bring “Amulet” to the big screen, Deadline reports. A series of graphic novels by Kazu Kibuishi, “Amulet” follows a girl named Emily who moves in with her great-grandfather and discovers a magical necklace that allows her to enter the fictional world of Alledia. No casting decisions have been announced yet, but anyone who’s seen Bella Ramsey’s performance as Lady Mormont on “Game of Thrones” knows the young actress is ready for the big time.

“Amulet” was previously in development at Warner Bros. with the involvement of Will Smith’s production company Overbrook Entertainment; his children Jaden and Willow were planned to star. As so often happens in this capricious industry, however, that iteration of the project never came to fruition.

With the success of Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds may very well be one of the hottest actors in the business right now. He's at the point where he could pretty much do whatever he wants in front of camera (not that it's stopped him before), and but that's exactly what he does when he crashes a press junket for Hugh Jackman's upcoming film, Eddie The Eagle. Over the course of the interview, Reynolds manages to stick in some Deadpool-related references in regards to the travesty of X-men Origins: Wolverine
The result is pretty hilarious. Check it out below, and watch two men with perfect bone structures laugh at how beautiful they both are.
I love how Ryan Reynolds even managed to get Hugh Jackman to deliver that classic Crocodile Dundee line.
While this was something of a fun promotional video for Eddie The Eagle, this also works relatively well as a backdoor Deadpool promotion.

This week, Deadpool will be unleashed on the masses (that are old enough to get into an R-rated movie) after what seems like an awful long time in development.
For more details on how X-Men: Origins Wolverine and the terrible, horrible mess it made of the Wade Wilson character, I point you to the inaugural Los Fanboys Latino-Review podcast which has a great interview with Rob Liefeld and a discussion about Deadpool (as well as hot takes on the week’s most recent movie news, as you’ve come to expect).
Until Deadpool is something everyone’s gotten to see, best to not spoil the nitty gritty, the call backs or discuss the mystery of something called Feige’s Pizzeria appearing in the movie. Seeing as how Marvel Studios had nothing to do with it. I guess it’s now fair game to poke at the other megafranchise, which...

Some young Instagram user has found her way to an event which just so happened to feature a standee for X-Men: Apocalypse, and it’s probably one of the coolest standees ever made. A mere 16 years ago, the idea that we’d be seeing advertisements for a sixth X-Men movie (and ninth in the entire X-franchise) which features more mutants than you can shake an adamantium claw at would have been laughable.
Whilst it’s damn cool that we’re finally getting someone a bit more outlandish like Apocalypse as the villain, and we’ve got Psylocke (Olivia Munn) in her classic purple leotard, and hey there’s Storm with her mohawk… we’re still being forced to live with the reality of black leather-clad X-Men. This film is set in the 80s, for god’s sake! If ever there was an excuse for colourful spandex…
Ah well.

Tna staged what might possibly be their final ever pay-per-view event with Bound for Glory 2015, and though much of the wrestling was perfectly serviceable, the show is sadly more likely to be remembered as a glaring example of everything the company are doing wrong production-wise and creatively.
On one hand, the various screw-ups, bulls*** finishes and wretched lines of commentary made it one of the year’s most entertaining PPVs from any company, but given that this was pretty much their final chance to show their worth off on a huge stage, it really feels like they blew it.
Still, it’s not a show that’ll be soon forgotten by anyone who watched it: it was nothing if not eventful and hilariously bizarre to watch, a fascinating car wreck which serves as a reminder of just how gingerly Tna are hanging on.

In his second arc on Ultimate X-Men, title “Return to Weapon X”, writer Mark Millar decides to not make everything about Wolverine and gives readers an in-depth look at the Ultimate Weapon X program. The Weapon X program in the Ultimate Universe is a blacker than black ops group where Shield uses mutants for deep cover and wetwork missions while experimenting on them and torturing them to make them more docile participants in these attacks, which are often on countries with “illegal genetic” material or technology. (Even if these issues have little too much bodily fluid humor and semi-dated pop culture references, Millar is a good at writing political doublespeak.) I am also combining my column with our mini event “Worst Comics Month”. This is because after I finished binge reading Ultimate Spider-Man Volume One and decided to read this “Ultimatum” series, which filled the gaps in some of the final issues, I (the neophyte comics fan) felt like I had truly experienced a bad comic with its ugly art, “shocking” plot reveals with little or no build-up, and jarring switches in tone from Hulk switching from dumb to smart to in between in the space of a panel to...

Inked by Art Thibert (4), Danny Miki (5-6), Joe Weems (5)

Published by Marvel Comics
In Ultimate X-Men #4-6, writer Mark Millar and artists Adam Kubert and Andy Kubert continue to amp up the action with a pair of Sentinel assaults in the final two chapters while also giving Cyclops, Quicksilver, and Wolverine much needed character development. Millar continues to portray Magneto as the mutant Hitler (Cyclops even invokes Godwin’s Law in a “father/son” chat with him.), but his work with Xavier is slimy as well. Sure, he seems like a good guy, but he messes with Cyclops’ brain chemistry to try to get him not leave the team and concludes the “Tomorrow People” arc with Ming the Merciless-type stare while revealing he has a secret plan that might involve Wolverine.

Published by Marvel Comics
Civil War was a massive Marvel crossover event running from 2006 to 2007 and tied into virtually every Marvel comic including cosmic ones, like Nova, and quirky teen ones, like Runaways. The comic begins with the New Warriors (a team of perpetually C-Listers) fighting a group of supervillains to garner better ratings for their reality TV show, which leads to the villain Nitro blowing up a school in Stamford, Connecticut leading to many civilian casualties. This leads to Tony Stark, Reed Richards, the Avengers, and Shield supporting the Superhuman Registration Act, which bans secret identities, implements mandatory training for young heroes, and makes superheroes agents of Shield. What's your favorite scene in X-Men: Days of Future Past? There are a lot to choose from, but most people would answer the Pentagon kitchen scene featuring 'Quicksilver' (Evan Peters) and his mutant-speed. It is visually stunning as the speedster races around the set disarming the Pentagon security and changing the trajectory of bullets headed toward Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Charles Xavier (James McAvoy). In order to pull off the slow-motion sequence director Bryan Singer had to shoot the scene with a high-speed camera filming at 3,600 frames per second. Below, is a three minute video detailing the visual effects that were created by Rising Sun Pictures for the scene. It is a must watch for any fan of the series. When director Bryan Singer ("The Usual Suspects") announced that X-Men: Days of Future Past would include 'Quicksilver' and that Evan Peters ("Kick-Ass") would play the role many people, such as myself, were skeptical. The timing of the announcement seemed especially odd since we already knew Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron had decided to use the speedy-mutant as well. But all doubt surrounding Singer's intentions were tossed out the window when audiences were blown away by the film's Pentagon scene. We’re less than 3 weeks away from Tna’s biggest event of the year. And for those living under a rock, but still with enough internet access to read this article, Tna have made this years event even bigger than ever before by holding it in Tokyo. This is their first ever major Pay Per View to be held outside of North America (One Night Only doesn’t count) and the fact that they are working together with The Great Mutas Wrestle-1 promotion, means this is set to be Tna’s most intriguing event in years.
Now Tna has come under a lot of fire from fans and critics alike over the years. It’s no secret that there have been many, many stumbles over their 12 year journey but there’s really no need to get into what most of us are already too familiar with.

San Francisco board supervisor, fearless gay rights activist, and all-around inspiration Harvey Milk is still a heroic figure 35 years after his murder at the age of 48. When he and San Francisco mayor George Moscone were murdered by Dan White, who was only convicted of manslaughter, outrage and grief rippled through the city. In 1984, the Academy Award-winning documentary The Times of Harvey Milk effectively chronicled Milk’s life and death, and because of that film we have indispensable insight into the mind of one of our pioneering gay rights leaders.
And yet, there are still facts about Milk that we either forget or overlook. Here are 10 facts about the man you might not know — some are funny, some are pop cultural, and some, particularly the one about Dan White, are unsettling. But 35 years on, it’s a joy to think about Harvey Milk, whose life was a terrific source of hope,...

October 27th 2009 was a day that I imagine very few people saw coming. This was the day that Tna Wrestling, a company that has long been a very distant number two wrestling promotion who are very much in the background compared to the monolith that is WWE – announced they had signed The biggest professional wrestler in the business, Hulk Hogan.
Now of course Hogan was way beyond actually wrestling anything aside from maybe a very rare match with very few bumps taken, but his presence clearly would attract a whole new audience to the Tna product wouldn’t it? See Tna had been trying to raise awareness for their product for many years. Usually they seemed to try and accomplish this by trying to attract former WWE wrestlers and hoping they would help them get over the 1.0 ratings hump that they’d been stuck with seemingly forever. They tried with Christian,...

Idw Procures the Rights to Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The original novel featured illustrations by Ralph Steadman so making it a graphic novel actually makes sense. This could be a chance to look at this classic of gonzo journalism and redeem its reputation after the 1996 film starring Johnny Depp got mixed reviews. No artist, writer, or release date has been announced, but Idw could announce more details at New York Comic Con. This book would be perfect for Warren Ellis, who basically wrote a future version of Hunter S. Thompson in his masterpiece Transmetropolitan. No matter who writes or draws it, this will be a comic, like the Fight Club sequel, that will appeal to non-comics fan and continue Idw’s tradition of having excellent literary adaptations, like Darwyn Cooke’s Eisner winning Richard Stark’s Parker comics.

Despite all the hype about movies, TV shows, and video games, there are still comics panels and comic related news coming from San Diego Comic Con. Many of the announcements were made before the show, but there were few awesome surprises for almost every company, including Marvel, Dark Horse, and some especially interesting ones from Idw.
Marvel Announces the “Cataclysm” Event for the Ultimate Universe
This is a given, but Marvel has way too many events. “Age of Ultron” hadn’t even ended, and there were teasers about “Infinity”, “Battle of the Atom”, and the “Inhumanity” events. However, “Cataclysm” could be a decent story for several reasons. First, it will only cross over into the three titles at the most. The Ultimate Universe has thirteen years of continuity to catch up with, but only three books (Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimates) so it’s easier to know what’s going on in it.

With Scott Snyder’s Batman Year Zero origin story beginning a new arc on his run of Batman this week, we thought we would look back to our own origin stories, tracing back to how we entered into the world of comics. Sure, the Sound On Sight comics team may not have origin stories as epic as some of the superheroes out there, but going back is a great way to look at how we were all introduced to comics, and why we write about them today. Here’s how it all began…
A Toxic Beginning
by Tony Nunes
I remember the plucking of my comic book virginity well. Easter of 1991, a scrawny nine year old version of myself, Ghostbusters and Star Wars obsessed and well on his way to becoming a full-fledged geek finds his first comic book in one of his Easter baskets. Ok, enough talking about myself in the third person.

“X-Men” #1
Written by Brian Wood
Drawn by Olivier Coipel
Inking by Mark Morales and Olivier Coipel
Colouring by Laura Martin
Immediately after its launch announcement, the new X-Men comic, simply titled “X-Men” has been the talk of the comic community, with many waiting in eager anticipation for the very first all-women starring X-Men comic written by fan-favourite Brian Wood (“Ultimate X-Men”, “Dmz”), and others skeptical about the comic’s existence, thinking perhaps the all-female team will result in nothing more than a gimmick. Well, the first issue is out, and we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief in knowing that this comic is no gimmick.
First of all, this comic does things right by not even mentioning the fact that the team consists of all women. And why should it? It is a non-factor for these women, who are, above all else, X-Men. Instead of cheaply exploiting and objectifying its cast,...

Jupiter’s Legacy 1
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist/Cover: Frank Quitely
Colors: Peter Doherty
Published by Image Comics
In Jupiter’s Legacy, two legendary comics creators come together to tell a multi-generational superhero epic for the 21st century. The story isn’t as dark and dystopian as Watchmen or Dark Knight Returns, and it’s not as sentimental as Kingdom Come. It is also is a bit of a slow burn with only one “fight scene”. Most of the conflict in this issue comes from clashing views among different “good” characters. And characterization is a strength of this issue which borrows from both classical mythology and modern American superhero comics with a splash of adventure stories at the beginning.
This issue had some of Mark Millar’s most well-balanced characters since Superman: Red Son. He is known for examining the darker side of iconic heroes, like Wolverine, Iron Man, and Captain America in his previous work,...

Hands up if you remember the WCW Invasion angle back when WWE owner Vince McMahon bought the failing company back in 2001. Now hands up if you were happy with the way Vince and co. handled the whole storyline. Not many of you I’ll bet. What could easily have been the biggest angle in the history of professional wrestling turned into a massive vanity project for the company’s head honcho who outright refused to see those boys from “Dubbya See Dubbya” get the better of any of his creations. It was a huge mistake.
A decade has passed since the horrible Invasion PPV and no one cares to discuss it. Plenty of ex-wcw guys recovered from the failed Invasion (Booker T for example) but many more just faded away into obscurity or simply did not take part (Kevin Nash, Hulk Hogan, Goldberg, Sting). But what if a similar angle...

When these artists started working, Wolverine was one of Marvel’s biggest stars. He got his own solo book in 1988 and was prominently featured in Fox’s long-running X-Men cartoon. Wolverine also appeared in his first solo video games Wolverine and Wolverine: Adamantium Rage in 1991 and 1994. In comics, this was a time of experimentation and changes for the character. He lost his adamantium skeleton to Magneto in X-Men 25 (1993), left the X-Men and became feral. His appearance changed to look more like Hugh Jackman from the X-Men films, his origin and true name James Howlett were revealed in Origin (2001-2), and he joined the Avengers and X-Force. He also began to randomly guest star in various titles leading to what is called “Wolverine Publicity” by TV Tropes.

Mark Millar has had quite a career. From his beginnings with 2000 Ad comics, the home of Judge Dredd, to his controversial stint with DC Comics during his “The Authority,” he has always had a penchant for reinvigorating old characters. Now, Millar releases creator-owned projects, most famously “Kick-Ass.” But, there has always been a soft spot for Marvel’s Merry Mutants, a group he came very familiar with during his run for “Ultimate X-Men.”
Being Fox Studio’s overseer for their version of Marvel’s cinematic universe, he had his own thoughts when it came time to discuss the upcoming “Days of Future Past.”
“It has actually been very well put together – Simon Kinberg and Matthew Vaughn worked on it together and they are both great at what they do. Then Bryan Singer came in, and, of course, he is Mr. X-Men and he knows exactly how everything works.

Hollywood's upcoming superpowered ensembles don't just include Avengers 2, Guardians of the Galaxy and Dark Universe. There's also the hotly-anticipated new X-Men film, which begins production in April.
And as we move towards the start of filming on X-Men: Days of Future Past, speculation continues as to which other casting announcements will be made.
So far, we know that X-Men: First Class actors James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult will be joined by original trilogy stars Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Hugh Jackman. Obviously, there are more names yet to be revealed.
Jackman told the Daily Mail: "You wouldn't have enough room on the page after you've listed them all. Every other actor who's ever put on a superhero uniform will be in it.
"There's an element of time travel and, naturally, it will be action-packed," he added.
One actor who says he hasn't yet joined the project is Shawn Ashmore,...

Judging by the letters it's probably safe to assume it's another X-Men title. Does that DNA strand have any significance or is it simply speaking to the larger genetic makeup of the mutant population. And to make an obvious guess, does Xx stand for Xtreme-x-Men (too obvious right)? Wood broke on the scene in 1997 with Channel Zero and has gone on to write some notable titles including Dmz, Ultimate X-Men and Wolverine and the X-Men: Alpha & Omega (2012). Oliver Copiel is a French comic book artist known for his Marvel work although he got his start with DnA on Legion of Superheroes. He's provided art for Thor, X-Men, New Avengers, Avengers vs X-Men and much more. Marvel Studios Countdown is a biweekly column focusing on all things related to Marvel Studios and its movies, past, present and future. Twentieth Century Fox may have let the Daredevil rights slip through its fingers back to Marvel Studios, but the company is still sitting pretty on the X-Men and Fantastic Four brands. Fox recently hired comic scribe Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Ultimate X-Men) to oversee its Marvel films, and it wants to do what Marvel Studios is doing -- it want to make millions with superhero films in one shared, cohesive universe. It’s funny to see Fox competing with Marvel with Marvel’s own properties, but it makes sense from a business standpoint for Fox to milk these franchises for all that they’re worth. In fact...

The value of a guru apparently can't be underestimated. Marvel Studios has Joss Whedon, who signed an exclusive deal to help oversee their film and television properties over the next few years. The X-Men, unofficially, have Bryan Singer, who's been involved in every one of their worthwhile properties. And a few weeks ago, 20th Century Fox announced that they'd hired established comics writer Mark Millar to oversee their properties, among which include the X-Men and the Fantastic Four.
A long-time writer on titles like "Ultimate X-Men," "The Authority," and his own creator-owned properties such as "Kick-Ass" and "Wanted," Millar made a name for himself as one of the most entertaining creators in comics. When he was writing company-owned characters, Millar's talents as a writer quickly shown through: an eye for big picture plotting, unrivaled ability for choreographing arresting action scenes, a skill for using continuity and shared universe as...

The X-Men and Avengers franchises are two of the most profitable and successful productions in the superhero world right now. With X-Men: First Class breathing new life into the series, The Avengers boasting a veritable army of audience-friendly comic book heroes, and Chris Nolan’s critically-acclaimed Batman trilogy drawing to a close, they’re pretty much where it’s at.
While the idea of an X-Men/Avengers crossover might just seem like the feverish daydreams of every geek ever, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler-Donner doesn’t seem averse to it.
“I would love it. I would love it. I personally have close ties to Marvel because of Kevin Feige, because Kevin worked for me. But to take our characters and mingle them in the way that they were written, yeah, absolutely.”
And why not? In the comic books, Marvel superheroes all live in the same universe, interacting with one another as...
