In 1965, the BBC resisted the introduction of Soo to The Sooty Show, for fear of making it too sexual...
The antics of Sooty, Sweep and Soo have brought entertainment to many over the past few decades. Originally a show with just Sooty and Sweep, show creator Harry Corbett had the idea of introducing another character, Soo, to the show. Soo was to be the talking character, and he mooted the idea to the show’s producer, Trevor Hill, back in 1965.
The answer? A swift no from the high ups of the BBC, “on the grounds that sex would be creeping into the programme”.
Corbett would go to his local pub afterwards and bemoan the decision. A reporter overheard him, asked if he could run the story, and Corbett agreed. It was, after all, factual.
These revelations have all come about in a new documentary, Sooty Ungloved, that...

Michelle Heaton whipped up some delicious cupcakes with Citv's Sooty and Sweep to raise money for Sport Relief. The 36-year-old television personality slipped on her limited edition apron, created by designer Orla Kiely, and strutted into the kitchen for a messy baking session with the lovable puppets in a bid to inspire the nation to get their wooden spoons out and raise some dough for the charity event. Michelle said: ''I urge everyone to put on a pinny, get baking and throw a showstopping bake sale for Sport Relief. Baking with Sooty & Sweep was the icing on the cake for...

Children's TV favourites Sooty and Sweep are lined up to star in their own film.
The puppet duo are to feature alongside their friend Soo in the new adventure, currently being penned by puppeteer and rights owner Richard Cadell.
The Radio Times reports that the as-yet-untitled movie has the blessing of Matthew Corbett (son of Sooty's creator Harry Corbett), and will see the bear and dog attempting to rescue their panda pal from a ruthless and controlling entertainment manager.
"She has been kidnapped by an evil showbiz impresario who will pull every trick in the book to turn her into a global superstar," explained Cadell.
"The film will be peppered with spectacular locations, countless celebrity cameos and buckets of slapstick, without detracting from the charm of the nation's favourite teddy bear, Sooty and his dim-witted best friend Sweep."
The Sooty Show was previously decommissioned by ITV in 2005, but after...

Louisa takes a look at the shock event in this week's Downton Abbey, which burst its viewers' cosy bubble...
This feature contains spoilers.
As Lady Cora reminded us this week, “A house party can fall so flat if there’s no special moment”. So - presumably went Julian Fellowes’ train of thought - can series four of a glossy TV drama. What’s needed is a show-stopper, something to stick a rocket up Twitter and overspill the margins of next weekend’s op ed pages. Shock deaths are blasé now. A rape should be just the ticket. It’s gritty. It’s shocking. It’s real.
Never mind that the tonal shift between Carson trumping about pre-war teaspoon arrangement and Anna being dragged down a corridor and raped was akin to finding a child molester between the pages of a Janet and John book.

They tell you that you should never meet your heroes. In the case of one little yellow bear, they couldn't have been more wrong.
What happened when Digital Spy met Sooty:
Sooty celebrates his 65th birthday in 2013 and he remains one of the most popular children's (and a few adults) entertainers on television after all these years.
So when Digital Spy were invited along to meet Sooty in a top secret location to enjoy a bit of birthday cake, we jumped at the opportunity.
We've interviewed many A-listers and so-called Hollywood superstars at Digital Spy down the years (Tom Cruise, Justin Timberlake, Simon Cowell), but none of them quite had the charisma or starpower that Sooty had when he burst out of his famous blue box.
Keep your eyes peeled for a special appearance from a close friend of Sooty, who is trying to steal the show and also prepare...

Sooty shocked the nation earlier this year when it was revealed that the lovable TV favourite had hospitalised TV magician Paul Daniels with a pizza. But Digital Spy has a fresh exclusive on the story that will shock fans of the yellow bear. This wasn't a first time offence. We caught up with comic legend John Shuttleworth, who recently guest starred on The Sooty Show, to get all the pizza-flying details. Are you well, John?
"I'm not very well. I'm adequately well....I've just about recovered from having a pizza thrown at me." This is the question everyone wants answered...
"I know. It felled Paul Daniels, didn't it? Well, I feel sorry for him Alex. Those pizzas are overdone. It's a good job I had my glasses on and that the frames are anti-shatter. I got hit square in the nose and right in (more)...

Children's TV favourite Sooty has apologised for injuring Paul Daniels with a pizza. The 73-year-old magician sought medical treatment after getting a lump of food thrown in his eye during filming of the yellow bear's Citv series. Speaking through his master Richard Cadell, the 63-year-old puppet said: "Sooty's very sorry for what happened. He never intended to knock Paul out, but he hopes Paul enjoyed the pizza. "He didn't know his own strength," Sooty continued to Orange. "But no one (more)...

Paul Daniels has claimed that the pizza-throwing incident on The Sooty Show has been blown out of proportion. The TV magician was alleged to have been left dazed by a pizza chucked by glove puppet Sooty during filming for the children's TV favourite's latest Citv series. Daniels spoke to Sky News Radio this morning, playing down the story and insisting that his only injury was a small amount of pizza in his eye. "That was over a month ago, I wasn't hospitalised, I got pizza in my eye," he said. "It stung." He continued: "So on the way home I stopped off at a wonderful village hospital and the nurse said, 'Oh no, this will sting a minute', put (more)...

Paul Daniels was reportedly taken to hospital after being hit with a pizza by Sooty the puppet. The bizarre accident occurred as the TV magician was filming a segment for ITV's The Sooty Show last month. According to The Sun, the scene saw the much-loved puppet throw a pizza at Daniels's head. However, the second take saw puppet operator Richard Cadell put too much force into the throw. A dazed Daniels received medical attention and was taken to A&E to be treated for suspected head injuries and a black eye. "Paul was such a good sport and so professional," a source told the paper. "He's insisted they use the scene where he got injured, not the first one. "Well, he did suffer for his art, so it would be a shame to waste it. And after all, it's (more)...

Richard Cadell is planning to celebrate Sooty's 60th birthday after purchasing the rights to the TV puppet. The presenter, who has worked with the popular children's character since 1998, bought the rights for a "significant sum" from Bridgefilms, reports The Stage. Cadell, who is currently planning a live tour called Sooty In Space, revealed that he is developing three ideas for TV shows. He is working on a sitcom based in a handyman agency, a variety show and a pre-school game show. Sooty and Cadell will appear at the Grove Theatre, Dunstable with former EastEnders actress Letitia Dean later this year. Commenting on Sooty's enduring appeal, Cadell said: "The routines that I’ve been presenting are [Sooty (more)...
