The BBC has announced that they are developing a new six-part mini-series adaptation of Victor Hugo's 19th century classic novel "Les Miserables" for BBC One and Weinstein Television. Much of the same team behind their recent "War and Peace" adaptation are also involved.
The new production is not based on the famed musical, instead writer Andrew Davies is going back to the original novel. He will go deeper into the original story of former convict Jean Valjean and chilling police officer Javert's cat-and-mouse relationship against the epic backdrop of France at a time of civil unrest.
Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content said in a statement: "Andrew Davies' extraordinary skill for adaptation will bring the world famous Les Miserables into powerful focus for a modern audience with a multi-layered re-telling of Victor Hugo's masterpiece. BBC One viewers can expect the same quality and scale from the team behind 'War...

Victor Hugo’s “Les Misérables” is set to make its television debut, thanks to the Weinstein Co. and BBC. The companies announced on Thursday that they will develop a six-part miniseries of the acclaimed classic set in 19th century France.
The project will be a co-production between BBC Studios and Lookout Point for BBC One in association with Weinstein Television. Andrew Davies, who also wrote the adaptation for ‘War & Peace’ for the two companies, will write the script based on the novel that depicted French convict Jean Valjean’s struggles to escape his past while being hunted for decades over a parole violation by Inspector Javert.

★★★★☆It's extremely fitting that after Tom Hooper's star-studded version of Les Misérables (2012) has exited stage-left that Raymond Bernard original 1934 adaptation of Victor Hugo’s timeless novel should re-appear fully restored. The film was released as three separate features in 1934 but the Pathe-restored Masters of Cinema Blu-ray enables audiences to watch all 300 minutes of the film's torturous struggle in one go. The narrative of this French classic unfolds in an effortless manner moving from Jean Valjean’s (Harry Baur) release from prison and the orphan Fantine’s (Florelle) carefree days, to Valjean’s eventual adoption of Fantine’s orphaned daughter Cosette (Josseline Gaël).

Long before "Les Miserables" was an Oscar-winning movie, it was a Tony-winning Broadway musical. This tuneful adaptation of the Victor Hugo classic novel took the top Tony back in 1987. That original production ran for 16 years on Broadway and returned to the rialto back in 2006 for a short stint. -Break- Join the fiery debate over the Tony Awards going on right now in our red-hot forums The 2012 film version spurred interest in another remouting on Broadway. How appropriate that the star of the movie, Hugh Jackman, is hosting the Tonys this year. He earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the persecuted Jean Valjean and Ramin Karimloo reaped a Tony bid for Best Musical Actor in this production, which also contends for Best Musical Revival. She lives on the property of a local police officer named Bill (David Morse) and his wife. She finds herself the object of a shy co-worker’s affection (Peter Stormare), but doesn’t entirely reciprocate, partly because she knows that she is slowly going blind. Oh Hugh Jackman, we didn’t think it was possible for you to be any more charming — and then you went ahead and sang this absurd musical-style song about Wolverine and swooooon. The actor stopped by the Matt Edmondson Show to belt out this fun version of “Who Am I” from Les Misérables. Jackman, of course, starred in the 2012 remake of the Victor Hugo novel as French peasant Jean Valjean. The escaped prisoner seeks redemption and tries to start a new life in revolutionary period France. We also appreciate the little X-Men: Days of Future Past plug worked into the song that Jackman so gleefully points out. We can always count on Jackman to give it his all, even for a goofy radio show. It seems that...

Ever dream of singing Jean Valjean’s songs? Or bringing the tragic Fantine to life? Now, actors don’t have to move to New York or join a tour for a chance to perform in a stage production of “Les Misérables.” The musical based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel is being licensed to regional theaters in major touring markets for the first time in 25 years. And companies around the country are scrambling to mount their own productions. As casting ramps up in the coming weeks, regional musical theater actors will get their shots at interpreting the characters in Cameron Mackintosh’s long-running musical. “The floodgates are open,” an official with Musical Theatre International, which holds the rights, told Backstage. The rights were first made available in 2012, but over the last two years, Mti has lifted different regional restrictions. Los Angeles is one of the latest markets to get the rights.

A giant beautiful flawed mess is the best description I can give for the Tom Hooper-directed big-screen adaptation of Les Misérables, itself a musical theater adaptation of the 1862 Victor Hugo novel. The story is a sweeping epic, and people unfamiliar with the material may find they are swept off their feet by the spectacle. But for longtime fans of the musical, the movie is a bumpy ride more full of downs than ups.
Hugh Jackman takes on the lead role of Jean Valjean, a convict released after 19 years imprisonment for the loaf of bread he stole to feed his sister's starving child. The film opens with a stunning shot of hundreds of prisoners, Valjean among them, struggling with lines to pull a ship into dock. This is one of the strongest images Hooper presents us and a dazzling introduction to Valjean's world. As he is released, Valjean is confronted by Russell Crowe's Javert,...

A visually impressive adaptation of Les Miserables comes to the screen under the direction of Tom Hooper. It's one of the best interpretations of the book to date. This film is one of the finest movies of the year and will likely be remembered at Oscar time.
There have been many screen adaptations of Victor Hugo's classic novel Les Miserables over the years, both on TV and on the big screen. This latest version is not so much a new interpretation of the book as it is a filmed version of the long-running musical play. The film follows the play very accurately and brings the songs from Broadway to the big screen. Adapted from the stage musical, which itself was adapted from Victor Hugo's 1862 French novel, Les Miserables is instantly massive as prisoners heave on giant ropes, pulling a massive ship into the port at Toulon. They sing in tune with each pull, "Look down, look down... Don't look them in the eye." It's here we meet Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) for the first time, head shaven and scarred. His sentence of nineteen years for stealing a single loaf of bread has come to an end, but a strict parole has been put in place, limiting his freedom under the watchful eye of the dedicated inspector of police Javert (Russell Crowe). These opening moments take place in the year 1815 and the film will cover the next 33 years as the people rise up to claim their country, an ex-con will become an adoptive father and a young girl will fall in love.

While Amanda Seyfried's Cosette and Eddie Redmayne's Marius sing about hearts full of love in one of the recently released clips from Tom Hooper's upcoming Les Miserables, we're given a glimpse of another duet, this one far less romantic. But just as "A Heart Full of Love" marks the start of a relationship between two characters in the story, so does this scene between Hugh Jackman's Jean Valjean and Russell Crowe's Javert. The filmmakers of Les Miserables set out to find what director Tom Hooper often refers to as .the perfect storm of actors.. Elaborates producer Eric Fellner: .We needed three things from our cast: star power, gifted actors and accomplished singers, and we were blessed to hit a moment in time where that group of actors exists. The cast that we see in the film is pretty much everyone we originally went after.. This was a major attraction for Hooper when he considered an adaptation of a fully through-sung musical. He explains: .I wanted to take a risk and do something very different in a different genre. From the beginning, what excited me was the idea of doing it live. I don.t think I would have done it if it turned out not to be possible to direct the film live, because no matter how good the synchronization is of actors singing to playback,...

Following on from the excellent set of character posters we saw for Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables last month, we’ve now got two more excellent posters to share, giving us our first good look at Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter in the film, with Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne gracing the second.
Hooper’s musical is very much one of the most anticipated films of the year, with its release set for the height of the awards season, and having taken a different approach to the musical genre – with every single note sung live on set, rather than recorded in a studio – we can’t wait to see and hear the results.

"Les Miserables" fans can stop dreaming a dream about what Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter look like in in the new film. The two stars play the Thenardiers in the anticipated adaptation of the famed musical, and they appear together for the first time on the latest character poster for Tom Hooper's epic, debuting exclusively here at The Huffington Post.
Additionally, HuffPost has a new character poster featuring Cosette and Marius (Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne).
Previous character posters for "Les Miserables" have included Hugh Jackman (as Jean Valjean), Russell Crowe (as Javert), Anne Hathaway (as Fantine) and Seyfried by herself. As fans of the musical (and/or Victor Hugo novel) might remember, the Thenardiers are duplicitous parents of Eponine (played by newcomer Samantha Barks) and factor heavily in the film's tragic last act.

Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables remains one of the most anticipated films of the year, with an all-star cast led by Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Amanda Seyfried.
The big-screen musical adaptation is set to reinvigorate the musical genre, with every note sung live on the set rather than beforehand in studios, and that is a prospect that is definitely something to look forward to.
The film’s release is very much on the horizon, and now a new Japanese poster has made its way online, with the leading quartet front and centre atop a rather epic scene.

Tom Hooper’s epic musical Les Miserables is a marketer’s dream. With a cast bursting at the seams from star power – Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Sacha Baron Cohen, Russell Crowe and Helena Bonham Carter among the most notable – and based on a beloved book/musical/epic, there’s little that can go wrong. Unless, of course, the film collapses in the most epic manner.
Based on the trailers, posters and clips we’ve seen so far, that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. On that note, today First Showing brings us a new poster of Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean. It’s your standard character poster of a very brooding and tortured-looking Jackman gazing soulfully into the camera. The tagline Freedom Is Mine might not bear scrutiny – what does that mean, exactly? – but it works for a portentous statement of epic conflict.
