The transformation of Michael Keaton from a mainstay in 1980s American comedies to one of the most dynamic leading men in the industry has been one of the most surprising developments of recent movie history. Keaton was already beloved by audiences for his role in blockbusters like the Batman series and Beetlejuice, but he had never really ventured into “prestige territory” until his breakthrough Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu’s 2014 film Birdman (or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). However, Keaton nearly got his shot at leading man stardom a decade earlier when he got close to landing a spot in Clint Eastwood’s 2003 epic Mystic River. The role, which eventually went to Kevin Bacon, certainly would have changed the direction of his career.

Robert Englund steps into the director’s chair with ‘976-Evil,’ a dark dive into Satanism and demonology where a bullied outcast uses an occult hotline to bite back.
“Out of the darkness and into light, comes your horrorscope on this dark and stormy night.”
Robert Englund is a name who needs no introduction in the horror community. He’s played Freddy Krueger in eight A Nightmare on Elm Street movies and has brought life to one of the horror genre’s greatest icons. Englund’s incomparable work as Krueger would be enough to forever make him a celebrity, but he’s had a rich horror career that’s included multiple roles in Tobe Hooper films and, more recently, his standout performance as Victor Creel in the streaming phenomenon, Stranger Things. Englund will always be Freddy Krueger, but it’s curious to consider how his career would have been different if...

Picnik Entertainment has acquired U.K. distribution rights for “The Almond and the Seahorse,” starring Rebel Wilson and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Based on Kaite O’Reilly’s play, film’s cast also includes Trine Dyrholm (“In a Better World”), Celyn Jones (“Swede Caroline”), Meera Syal (“Yesterday”), Ruth Madeley (“Years and Years”) and Alice Lowe (“Hot Fuzz”).
The Almond and the Seahorse are the nicknames given to the parts of human brains that lay down new memories and hold on to the old ones. After a Tbi (a traumatic brain injury) these parts can change and become new pathways. The film focuses on characters without brain damage, but have to carry the heart damage. Sarah (Wilson) is an archaeologist who loves her husband Joe (Jones) but after a Tbi their love is trapped in the past. Toni (Gainsbourg) is an architect and loves her partner Gwen (Dyrholm) but after a Tbi they have...

Dakota Johnson is hopping in a cab to distance herself from the Madame Web fallout for Christy Hall’s upcoming drama Daddio. Setting a destination for theaters on June 28, Daddio stars Johnson and Sean Penn in a character-driven feature about human connectivity and appreciating life’s intricate events that lead to significant changes. The highly anticipated film, written and directed by Christy Hall in her feature directorial debut, received an enthusiastic response and critical praise following its premieres at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival.
Here’s the official synopsis for Daddio courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics:
Daddio celebrates the power found in those rare moments of pure human connection, even with the most unlikely person. This highly contained, yet kinetic character-study – encapsulated in one single cab ride – explores the complexities inherent to the secrets we keep, particularly the ones locked away on our phones. Kevin Bacon's Animal House experience was marred by uncomfortable hazing scenes directed by John Landis. Bacon felt alienated from his co-stars due to Landis' on-screen division that spilled over into real life dynamics. Despite the challenges, Bacon has moved past his negative Animal House experience, and has become a revered Hollywood actor.
Animal House has long been heralded as a cornerstone of American comedy cinema, but the Kevin Bacon Animal House role has become problematic due to some behind-the-scenes issues. Animal House is a classic gross-out comedy that broke new ground with its raucous humor, rebellious spirit, and a memorable cast that brought the anarchic world of a 1960s fraternity to life. Among the ensemble was a young Kevin Bacon portraying Chip Dillard, a naïve college freshman pledging the elitist Omega Theta Pi fraternity. While the film has achieved cult status, Bacon didn't have the best personal experiences on set.

2023 was a miraculous year for German actress Sandra Huller. Not only did she receive critical acclaim for her riveting portrayal of a woman on trial for murdering her husband in France’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” she was also praised for her role as the wife of a Nazi commander in the United Kingdom’s German-language “The Zone of Interest.” Indeed, there was much interest in Huller and her two films. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for “Anatomy.” And both “Anatomy” and “Zone” landed slots for Best Picture, as well as Best Director bids for Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer, respectively.
As I was speaking to academy members ahead of last Sunday’s ceremony, I detected a surprisingly robust amount of support for Huller. And many of those who had voted for her mentioned her work in “The Zone of Interest.” It really did seem...

Kevin Bacon shot to stardom with the 1984 movie Footloose, marking a pivotal moment in his career. The film, which remains one of his most celebrated works, revolves around a teenager in a small town determined to challenge a strict ban on dancing. With Lori Singer in the movie, Footloose is more than just a mere movie; it’s a captivating journey that effortlessly transports its audience back to the lively atmosphere of the eighties.

It’s been two decades since an epic fantasy film made history at the Oscars, winning every category in which it was nominated, and three women set new records. There weren’t many surprises at the 76th Academy Awards, but there were some memorable moments. Billy Crystal hosted for his eighth time on February 29, 2004. Read on for Gold Derby’s Oscars flashback 20 years ago to 2004.
It was finally Peter Jackson‘s time as the third installment of his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy earned him a trio of awards. Despite numerous nominations, the first two films failed to make big showings; however, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” not only claimed Best Picture, but won all 11 categories in which it was nominated. It tied with “Ben-Hur” (1960) and “Titanic” (1998) for most wins in one ceremony, and holds the record for biggest sweep. It was the 10th film...

The 2024 Oscar race is on, and one film has the potential to accomplish a feat that hasn’t happened in 64 years. “Oppenheimer” leads the nominations with 13, and it’s on track to win several of those categories. If Christopher Nolan‘s epic claims Best Picture, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), it will be the first time since 1960 that the same film (“Ben-Hur”) has won those three exact categories. And it would be only the fourth time it’s ever happened.

After his 1984 film Footloose, Kevin Bacon felt uncomfortable with the fame—especially being called a “pop star.” Bacon talked about how there was a lot of attention on the movie once it became a hit in 1984.
Kevin Bacon as Ren McCormack in Footloose
Footloose (1984) was the film that put Bacon into the limelight. In the film, he plays Ren McCormack, a dance-loving teenager who moves from a big city to a small town where rock music and dancing are verboten. Critics had different opinions about the movie, but it did really well at the box office.

You wanna get nuts? C’mon, let’s get nuts. Through no fault of his own, Michael Keaton’s fun, nostalgic return as Batman had imploded when The Flash would debut to disaster and his follow-up in Batgirl would equally become infamous by getting shelved and locked away. Keaton is bouncing back in a big way with his second directorial effort, Knox Goes Away. Keaton’s directorial debut came in 2008 with the crime thriller, The Merry Gentleman. The trailer for Knox Goes Away has dropped courtesy of Saban Films and features a quote from our own Chris Bumbray, which was also featured on the poster, which says Keaton gives “A career-best performance.”
Knox Goes Away revolves around a contract killer who, after being diagnosed with a fast-moving form of dementia, is presented with the opportunity to redeem himself by saving the life of his estranged adult son. But to do so,...

I recently recapped the fascinating Best Actor race of 2003, in which saw Sean Penn in “Mystic River” win the first of his two Best Actor Oscars. (He would prevail again five years later for “Milk.”)
Regarding Penn’s first victory, he faced stiff competition not only from Bill Murray in “Lost in Translation” but also Johnny Depp in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Depp hadn’t initially been considered much of a threat — until he pulled off a huge upset at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
A dedicated Gold Derby reader has since asked me how Depp managed to surprise at SAG. Figuring that others might be wondering the same thing, I thought that I would offer everyone in awards land my Top 5 reasons why. And here they are.
1. He had the most theatrical performance of the bunch.

Shortly after Warner Bros. Pictures summoned the official title and release date for Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice sequel, in which Michael Keaton returns as the Ghost with the Most, the release date for Keaton’s Knox Goes Away is here! The thriller marks Keaton’s second time as the director of a feature-length film. He also stars in the project opposite Al Pacino, James Marsden, and Marcia Gay Harden, with Ray McKinnon, Suzy Nakamura, Lela Loren, Dennis Dugan, Jonna Kulig, and more. Saban Films has set a release date of March 15 for Knox Goes Away after the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year.

All apologies to John Wayne, but Clint Eastwood is easily the most recognizable and influential person involved in the development of Western films. Many would cite his starring role as “The Man With No Name” in Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly as the performance that single-handedly made Spaghetti Westerns cool on an international scale. However, Eastwood managed to direct some of the greatest Westerns as well once he transitioned to a behind-the-scenes role, and created such classics as The Outlaw Josey Wales, Pale Rider, High Plains Drifter, and the Best Picture winner, Unforgiven. It would be easy to look at Eastwood’s achievements and simply see it as a catalog of the modern Western’s development, but his filmography includes much more than gunslinger flicks. In fact, Eastwood also directed Mystic River, one of the...

Acting experience can greatly benefit directors in working with actors and creating empathetic and understanding experiences on set. Several actors-turned-directors, such as Regina King and Clint Eastwood, have proven their skills in both fields and have left a significant impact on the film industry. Two decades ago at this time, the Oscar race for Best Actor was shaping up to be a rather competitive one. We had no idea what we were in for. Allow me to backtrack just a bit.
Three-time previous nominee Sean Penn had taken an early lead for his role as a troubled ex-convict and grieving father in Clint Eastwood’s crime drama “Mystic River.” Then Bill Murray began to generate major buzz for his portrayal of an aging movie star in Sofia Coppola’s acclaimed Tokyo-set comedy “Lost in Translation.”
The Golden Globes did little to clarify things. Penn prevailed in the drama category while Murray picked up the comedy/musical award. The latter did arguably get a bit of a boost with his charming acceptance speech.
All eyes were then on the Screen Actors Guild Award, which many thought would serve as a tie-breaker. But in the ultimate awards twist,...

Easy to dismiss because some of its broad, ridiculous, and suspension-of-disbelief turns—it’s essentially about a New England fishing community band of brothers that turn to drug dealers and spiraling criminal consequences in order to get out of the illegal activities jam they’re already in—the plot is fairly uninspired and breaks suspension of disbelief early.

Hollywood is overflowing with stories about films that took years of blood, sweat and tears to bring to the screen. Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind represents one of the longest kinds.
The Oscar-winning screenwriter of Mystic River and veteran director of such films as Legend, 42, A Knight’s Tale and Payback finished the script when he was 28. He’s now 62. “The joke is that I wrote it before Toby Wallace and Jenna Ortega were born and Ben Foster was 10 years old. It’s very strange, but everything happens for a reason. I just had to wait for this whole cast to grow up so I could cast them,” he explained at the film’s West Hollywood premiere on Tuesday referring to his actors who star opposite Tommy Lee Jones, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar, Tim Daly, Lolita Davidovich and Clayne Crawford.

‘The Mist’ 4K Ultra HD Review – There’s a Reason We’re Still Talking About This Movie 16 Years Later
Stephen King adaptations have always been hit and miss. Before Mike Flanagan came along, there was one filmmaker who could always be trusted with King’s material: Frank Darabont, whose first foray into filmmaking was a short adaptation of “The Woman in the Room.” After making a name for himself as a screenwriter with the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob, Darabont made his feature directorial debut with 1994’s The Shawshank Redemption and followed it up with The Green Mile in 1999.
His thus-far final King adaptation came in 2007 with The Mist, which finds a group of locals trapped in a grocery store while an ominous fog shrouding mysterious secrets envelopes their quaint Maine town. A microcosm of any community, the supermarket is a canny setting for a contained thriller. The divisive mob mentality and pigheaded self-righteousness that manifests under pressure is even more poignant in a post-Trump world.

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone moved to the big screen with their feature Team America. Although the film received positive reviews and enjoyed a healthy box-office run, both Parker and Stone vowed to never make another puppet feature.

Parker and Stone took a break from their South Park obligations to focus their attention and time on Team America. The comedy had a similar personality and tone to their hit Comedy Central program, parodying real-world events at the time. Despite the film’s success, however, both Parker and Stone confided that it was far from a pleasure to work on. So much so that even after it was done, Stone wondered if developing the film was worth the cost.

Emma Thompson has turned in a host of eclectic, effective, excellent performances throughout her illustrious career. She started out with period dramas such as “Howards End” and “The Remains of the Day” before later moving into fantasy with roles in “Nanny McPhee” and “Harry Potter.” Add to that top-tier performances in the likes of “Sense and Sensibility,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” “Cruella,” and “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” and you’ve got one hell of a performer.
However, Thompson has stated herself that the role she gets the most praise for is actually… “Love Actually.” The classic Richard Curtis Christmas movie, which turns 20 this year, tells the interconnected love stories of eight different sets of people with Thompson delivering the most emotional and heartbreaking storyline of all of them. Thompson’s Karen is an under-appreciated stay-at-home mother who spends her days looking after the kids, making costumes for their school nativity,...

“Ultimately, this is a mystery show, grounded on characters in a world that we could believe in,” declares “Silo” creator and showrunner Graham Yost. For our recent webchat he adds, “What is real and what isn’t? Who controls the knowledge? And then the big thing for me is, why is this happening? Why are they living underground? That kept me going through the three books,” he says, adding with a knowing smile, “buy the books, but don’t read them until the entire television series is over, because we’re going to veer in some ways and stay close in others. But mostly we want to get the fun of revealing the answers to the mysteries!” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Clint Eastwood’s legacy as an actor and a director has been so completely transformed over the past thirty years that this renaissance period, in which Eastwood has won four Academy Awards as a director and producer, has somewhat overshadowed the legendary screen career that preceded it.
Indeed, as Eastwood’s performances in the Dirty Harry film series and Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy film series unquestionably brought Eastwood enduring immortality, Eastwood has, over the past thirty years, established himself as one of the greatest filmmakers in history, even as Eastwood, once the biggest film star in the world, has increasingly stopped acting over the past fifteen years.
Moreover, as the now ninety-three-year-old Eastwood is set to possibly end his approximately sixty-five-year Hollywood career with the upcoming Eastwood-directed thriller film Juror No. 2, it now seems apparent that, while Eastwood’s screen persona was defined long ago, Eastwood’s already formidable...

Oscar winner Tim Robbins has been on the big screen for well into his fourth decade. Tour through our photo gallery above of Robbins’s 10 greatest films, ranked from worst to best.
Robbins won his Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for playing a former child abuse victim suspected of murder in Clint Eastwood‘s “Mystic River” (2003). He also competed as Best Director for the death-row prison drama “Dead Man Walking” (1995), which brought Susan Sarandon a Best Actress trophy. But while that film is certainly worthy of consideration among his best, this gallery is focused on Robbins’s work in front of the camera, so you won’t find it in our gallery above.
Though Robbins has yet to be recognized at the Emmys, his work on the HBO film “Cinema Verite” (2011) did bring him a Golden Globe nomination as Best TV Supporting Actor. Before that the actor won a...

Among the most underrated romantic comedies ever made is Comet (2014), starring Emmy Rossum and Justin Long. Those performers got their start around the same time as one another, with Long debuting in Galaxy Quest (1999) and Rossum in Songcatcher (2000) at the turn of the century. The former film is far more famous. But Songcatcher saw great success upon release, as well. In the following year, Long starred in a horror stint called Jeepers Creepers (2001), and it was off to superstardom from there.
Meanwhile, Rossum appeared in Mystic River (2003) by Clint Eastwood, then traversed a similar trajectory. She followed up with another supporting role in The Day After Tomorrow (2004), along with the first co-starring role of her career in The Phantom of the Opera (2004). But more recent fans of Rossum's may be familiar with her versatile career thanks to her leading role as Fiona Gallagher in the hit television series Shameless. She's...

A filmmaker of Clint Eastwood's caliber is going to have a filmography full of gems. Primarily known for his work in Westerns, biopics, and military dramas, every so often, Eastwood steps outside his comfort zone and delivers in a genre that would seem completely unexpected on paper. That happened in 2003 with Mystic River, a neo-noir murder mystery drama that seems a bit forgotten or overlooked, even though it was a financial success and earned six Academy Award nominations. It represents Eastwood at his very best, breathing vivid life into complex characters as he examines a plethora of themes that range from loyalty, friendship, revenge, and, ultimately, forgiveness.
Mystic River is based on the 2001 novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane, and it follows the lives of three childhood friends, Jimmy Markum (Sean Penn), Sean Devine (Kevin Bacon), and Dave Boyle (Tim Robbins), living in Charlestown, Boston in 1975. Dave...

Spoiler Warning for The Continental "Night Two"The Continental's second episode, titled "Night 2: Loyalty to the Master", certainly ended on the darkest note. The miniseries, a prequel to The John Wick franchise, premiered on Peacock on September 22, 2023, and has been interested in showing how Winston, played in the series by Colin Woodell, will take ownership of the titular hotel by the time of the John Wick film series. Kevin Bacon’s star-making role in 1984’s “Footloose” put him on a path that clashed with his original aspirations as a performer, the actor recently said on the “Podcrushed” podcast (via Insider). Bacon had no idea he was auditioning for a “dance movie” when he tested for the role of Ren McCormack.
“When I did the dance movie, I was not a dancer. I wasn’t trained as a dancer,” Bacon said. “If I’m being honest, I didn’t even really understand that it was a dance movie. I thought it was just a movie, and then, where they would indicate that there was dancing, I would just get up.”
Bacon continued, “They said something about a choreographer and I said, ‘You don’t really need a choreographer. I’ll just get up and dance. It’s not a big deal. Just play the record for me and I’ll jump around.

2003 was a good year to be a cinephile, demonstrated alone by the fact that the year's biggest and best release was The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. That third part of an iconic trilogy was a huge critical and box office success, and also happened to win 11 Oscars, including Best Picture. It wasn't alone, however, given that 2003 also saw the release of Oldboy, Kill Bill Vol. 1, Finding Nemo, Mystic River, and Lost in Translation, to name just a few.
