- Garth tells Walter a story about two twins that he and Hub met back in 1914 and starts to say something presumably sexual about them, but stops. When Hub first sees Mae, he asks his brother if he sent for a hooker. There is a crude reference to breastfeeding (see Language). Mae's dresses reveal some clevage. Young Hub and Jasmine passionately kiss.
Violence & Gore

- We see some brief war footage (played in an action rather than realistic fashion) where a man jumps on another man, while another man hits someone else with his rifle while explosions go off around them.
- In one scene in the present, Old Hub gets into a knifefight with a teenager. Then he starts punching 4 other "punks" who are thrown around and hit in the face until they start bleeding.
- A man physically abuses Walter by punching him and slapping him around. Jasmine (the lion) then rushes up to the man and mauls him (offscreen) but the man lives.
- In flashbacks, Hub gets into a swordfight with others where he slices, punches and kicks his opponents (with no blood and nothing graphic).
- A scene is played for laughs in which traveling salesmen try to sell stuff to the McCain brothers, who shoot in the air to scare them away.
Profanity

- At least 1 slang term for breasts ("tit"), 19 damns, 10 hells, 1 ass, 1 crap, 2 uses of "Oh my God" and 1 use each of "By God" and "God" as exclamations. The word "pisses off" is used once as a term meaning to make angry.
Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

- The uncles share some chewing tobacco and then give some to Walter who doesn't know what it is but ends up choking and spitting it out after he puts some in his mouth. Teenagers that appear to be underage buy beer at a gas station. Uncle Hub and Garth also drink what appears to be beer. As young men, Hub and Garth are given strong drinks by men in the Foreign Legion who then shanghied them. We see Mae on two occasions have a cigarette in her mouth and light it (however, this smoking could be considered historically accurate.) Later another woman is seen smoking.
Frightening & Intense Scenes

- Some boys open a crate only to discover that Walter's lion is inside. They then rush off and the lion escapes. Later, Hub nearly shoots the lion when he thinks it's attacking Walter (it's not, it's just playing with him) and others then approach a cornfield with guns, ready to shoot it (but no one does once they learn it's just playing).
- Walter is forced into the barn by a stranger, who wants to know where the treasure is, and threatens to physically hurt him.
- Uncle Hub collapses and is taken to the hospital (he's OK, but it should be noted that Hub throws a tin plate at a wall in anger which could be surprising, but isn't frightening.)
- Walter begins to suspect that Uncle Hub and Garth are bank robbers because of all the money they have (this proves to be false.) His mother and her boyfriend then pressure him into telling them where the money is by feeding him lies that say Uncle Hub and Garth killed innocent people.
- There is a lot of discussion of old age and death.
- Walter finds out that his mom has lied about where she's going to be while he's at his uncle's house.

- Two old men die in an airplane accident (their death is handled discreetly and their bodies are never shown).
