disorienting but rewarding
Adapting Dante to film has been done, I think, before. As adaptations go, this one does well at keeping the sense of cautiously distant awe that was so profound in the original. The original storyline is compressed into a few incidents, and the ending is really emphasized. What's amazing to me is the quietness of the characters, and the lack of music! Instead of manipulating the audience with mindless chatter or with emotional music, the filmmakers use only sounds (strange and hellish, more often than not) and sparse dialogue. It is very effective, although it takes a little while to get used to. A wonderfully disorienting film, and truly rewarding.
