Following an outbreak of vandalism by local kids Mary recommends punitive action but Angela suggests positive activities, in the process discovering bungee jumping, which she is keen to try, especially as the instructor is young and handsome. Other villagers also sign up but Angela begins to have second thoughts and only agrees to go through with it if white witch Holly gives her a lucky charm - a very large stone which makes her jump rather more spectacular than the others'. Meanwhile Mary forces the kids to paint a mural - securing herself an arts council grant along the way.

A storm causes a power cut in the village and the only person with any electricity is Old Jake, who has his own generator and charges people to use his facilities though the generator gets overloaded and blows. PC Alan makes Angela the power cut tsar, putting her in charge of overseeing the crisis, an activity which she enjoys so that she is rather disappointed when the power returns. Mary meanwhile is very jealous when Holly starts dating dozy young caravan dweller Harry and does her best to split them up.

Angela has a boyfriend called Archie but he is a layabout who exploits her and Mary agrees she will split up with Alan if Angela dumps Archie - which Angela does though Mary and Alan are only pretending. Holly is feeling depressed by her unmarried status and losing faith in witchcraft so the other villagers buy cures from her to cheer her up. Mary throws a party to celebrate the fact that she and Angela have been running the shop together for fifteen years and takes the opportunity to ask Alan to go out with her again but he declines as he is now dating Holly. Angela and Mary reflect on their time together and agree that friends are more constant - and better - than lovers.

The villagers start to go down with the Cornish flu, which sends them into fits of delirium before they pass out. Only Mary and Angela appear to be immune, which means that, with an influx of tourists, they are not only running the shop but the pub and the witchcraft centre but taking visitors around the bay in Old Jake's boat, the latter with disastrous results. Alan is also exempt but frustrated as it means he is unable to have sex with Mary before going on leave.

Mary Trewednack and Angela Phillips run the ailing shop in the Cornish village of St Gweep. Mary is unhappy about the number of incomers who buy properties purely as a holiday home, including television actress Gilly. Led by young hippy Jake, Mary and a reluctant Angela break into Gilly's house, watch her DVDs and eat her chocolates but Mary starts a small fire and leaves Angela to face a police caution. Fisherman Old Jake discovers bags of Tupperware being washed ashore on the beach and the villagers all gather to get their share, including Mary, though dim policeman Alan fails to notice the huge pile on her shop counter.

Holly decides that the village needs a revival of the Cornish language and brings along a guest speaker though nobody can understand what he is saying. Angela is mutually smitten by Martin, a handsome American on holiday - and their romance makes Mary very jealous, to the extent that, when he asks Angela to go back to London with him, she resorts to dirty tricks to get rid of him, though ultimately Angela admits to feeling safer in St Gweap.

Rowdy youths visiting from Devon are terrorizing St Gweap and when their car - registration number KNOB 1 - is found burnt out outside the pub Alan interviews several of the villagers who have had run-ins with the boys and who could be the culprit. Eventually Mary confesses but when he realizes that the villagers tried to call the police to arrest the visitors and only got his answer-phone Alan lets her go. She has less luck trying to romance old flame Alex, who is frightened away by her persistence - and Angela's gun.

A TV crew comes to the village to film 'Lost!', a drama serial, and Mary blackmails the producer into giving her and Angela parts in it. However they are both rubbish and ultimately learn that the camera was not switched on to film them. Revenge follows as a delivery van careers down the streets, destroying all the crew's equipment. Old Jake is approached by Victoria, his daughter from a holiday romance with her mother, but he feels unable to communicate and takes a crash course in parenthood from the other villagers.

Angela's father is due to visit and she has promised to drive him around Cornwall. However she has never driven before so she persuades other villagers to teach her, which does not always go well, especially when she drives Jeff's car over a cliff. Fortunately she passes her test in time but, being over-tired from practising, runs her father over. Mary discovers that Alan is a virgin and introduces him to the joys of sex in the open air but unfortunately they are discovered by an irate father and they end up on the front page of the local paper.

Mary is given a body piercing kit but since there are no instructions with it the results are less than satisfactory and she sells it to Jeff. Angela meanwhile is troubled to see that her old headmistress Miss Peppard, who humiliated her in front of the whole school by making her do a cross country run in her undies, is in the village and Mary has to stop her from killing the old lady. Eventually Angela confronts Miss Peppard, who assures her that the facts were not as she remembered them but Angela is, rightly, unconvinced.
