It was just last week we were celebrating the 20th anniversary of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which catapulted Michel Gondry into the Hollywood system with the likes of Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet. After the failure of that superhero tentpole, he retreated back to France, directing a handful of smaller-scale features, the latest of which, The Book of Solutions, gets meta following a filmmaker struggling with the editing of his big-budget project. Gondry is now mounting his return to Hollywood, the details of which have now been unveiled.
Deadline reports he’s directing an untitled coming-of-age musical, which is loosely inspired by the upbringing of Pharrell Williams. Set to star Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, coming off her Oscar win for The Holdovers, the Universal-backed project is set in 1977 Virginia Beach. The music icon is producing the feature, which is in production at Universal. “Elvis” actor Kelvin Harrison Jr. is set to portray Williams, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Randolph is in talks to star in a yet-unidentified role. The feature is set during Williams’ coming-of-age years in Virginia Beach in the 1970s.

Throughout the twenty-first century, science fiction blockbusters have dominated the film industry, earning billions of dollars at the worldwide box office. In terms of budgets, these films have astronomical production costs, with movies such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker all amassing budgets of over $400 million.
While the mass audience remains familiar with these behemoth franchise entities, many of the best science fiction films of the twenty-first century are low-budget independent movies. Films such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Ex Machina, and Donnie Darko prove that hundred-million-dollar budgets are superfluous, and, more often than not, lead to an inferior product.

Our newest Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winner, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, looks to have her next project in view. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the star of “The Holdovers” will join a new musical from director Michel Gondry and producer Pharrell Williams. The project is said to be based on Williams’s youth in Virginia Beach in the 1970s. (I hope we get to watch his very tall hat grow.) IMDb has the title of the film listed as “Atlantis,” but this is unconfirmed by THR.
The screenplay is written by Martin Hynes, whose previous writing credits include “Toy Story 4” and “Stealing Harvard” (and also playing George Lucas in the legendary short “George Lucas in Love”), and Steven Levenson, whose musical credits include “Dear Evan Hanson” and “tick, tick…Boom.” Kelvin Harrison Jr., recently seen in “Chevalier” and “Elvis” is believed to be starring, and IMDb lists Andre 3000, Mary J. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind turns 20 this year, but the film has become more renowned as years have passed. Michel Gondry's film has a fragmented storyline that depicts the complicated relationship between Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet). But the film is far more deeply layered than that. It is filled with absurdities and truth about what it means to fall in love and break up and fall in love all over again. But one particular absurdity in the film is the oversized orange sweater that Clementine wears. Although there doesn't seem much else to the sweater other than its eye-catching color, like most things in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the orange sweater has a deeper meaning.

True love isn't perfect — it's full of ups and downs, just like in real life, as shown in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Bad memories in relationships are important for growth and learning. Erasing them doesn't lead to happiness or fulfillment. The film teaches us that embracing both the good and the bad memories in a relationship is crucial for personal growth and understanding.
Hollywood romantic dramas tend to portray love and relationships as idealistic and flawless with the only obstacle standing in their way tending to be some kind of third party or outside force. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind celebrates its 20th anniversary today, and it's just as emotionally devastating now as it was in 2004. The surreal science fiction romance has become a beloved cult classic over the years and may see a new wave of recognition thanks to Ariana Grande naming her latest album Eternal Sunshine and referencing the film throughout. Directed by Michel Gondry with an Academy Award-winning screenplay by Charlie Kauffman, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind uses a thought experiment to tell the doomed love story of Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet): if you could erase someone from your memory, would you? And, more importantly, should you?...

20 years later, and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” hasn’t been remotely forgotten. Michel Gondry’s science fiction romance has, if anything, enjoyed renewed attention in 2024, thanks to the release of musician Ariana Grande’s “Eternal Sunshine” album. Grande, famously a fan of the film’s leading man Jim Carrey, referenced the film both in the album’s title song, and a music video that fully recreated the mind-wiping film’s romantic storyline for the single “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)”. The tributes came just weeks before the film’s March 19 anniversary, and hopefully should lead to one of the 21st-century’s greatest romance films getting even more fans.

Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet forget they used to be in love in a wonderfully inventive and moving reminder of why romantic pain is an important thing to remember
The greatest screen romances are usually about failure, not happily ever afters. Love sacrificed. Love unrequited. Love forbidden by social mores or bad timing or the tectonic forces of history. Think Casablanca. Brief Encounter. In the Mood for Love. The Age of Innocence. Moonlight. Considered another way, though, they’re powerful because they end so pristinely, before the banal hassles and petty fissures of everyday life make a mess of things. Give a relationship enough time and Before Sunrise turns into Before Midnight.
One of the reasons why Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, now 20 years old, ranks among the best love stories of the 21st century is that it makes the unique argument that failure is an essential, precious part of romantic experience.

Lucy Boynton and Justin H. Min shine in The Greatest Hits, leaving you rooting for their characters. The film boasts a standout soundtrack, showcasing a diverse range of songs that set the perfect tone. Despite underdeveloped characters, the allegory of synesthesia is a clever narrative hook that helps the great actors delve into grief and love.
Music has been an essential part of romance in cinema and in real-life; frankly, few relationships can withstand a total aural disparity. We see it with Tom Waits and Nina Simone of Bad Timing, Coldplay and The Shins in Garden State, and "As Time Goes By" in Casablanca. We see it with, well, everything in High Fidelity. Maybe it's because music speaks the emotions so that we don't have to; the unseen singer can lament or worship without embarrassment, and we can relate. Whatever the case may be, The Greatest Hits is obsessed with the idea.

Ari Aster has assembled an all-star cast for his next film, “Eddington,” recruiting Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr.
A24 is financing and producing the movie, which — based on Aster’s track record — we can only assume will give us nightmares. Plot details are kept under wraps besides the fact that the film “follows a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.”
“Eddington” starts production this week, with Aster writing, directing and producing alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Two-time Academy Award nominee Darius Khondji is the director of photography.

The singer-songwriter and Wicked actress opened with “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love).” Grande’s performance Saturday, as well as the music video for the single and the name of the album it’s on, draw from the 2004 romantic sci-fi film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. “Cheech and I were on the Paramount lot after we’d done the movie, and we’re kind of trying to figure out what we were going to do next— how we were going to get another movie going,” remembers Tommy Chong of the weeks following the 1978 release of Up in Smoke, the first film from him and comedy partner Cheech Marin. “And Warren Beatty, pulls up in his convertible. He took off his sunglasses and looked at us and he goes, ‘You guys have no idea what you’ve done.’ And we looked at each other like thinking, ‘Oh, what did we do?’ What we did was we pulled a movie out of thin air.”
Up in Smoke, which was made independently by principals with no filmmaking experience, grossed over $100 million at the box office, simultaneously launching and proving the commercial value of the genre, all in one go.

Ariana Grande‘s new album Eternal Sunshine is clearly a breakup album and fans think that she might be accusing her ex-husband Dalton Gomez of cheating.
The album is partially inspired by the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and the music video for “We Can’t Be Friends” mimics a scene from the film. In the video, Ari seemingly attempts to erase her ex from her memory.
The lyrics for the song “Eternal Sunshine” have fans thinking that Dalton might have cheated.

In the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, estranged lovers Joel and Clementine, played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, undergo an experimental treatment to remove memories of each other from their brains. A wrinkle in the procedure results in Joel’s realization that erasing his pain also means forgetting the joy and happiness he shared with her.
Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine takes the first part of that narrative as its inspiration, perhaps not recognizing that it’s the second bit that makes Michel Gondry’s 2014 film, the title of which was inspired by Alexander Pope’s poem “Eloisa to Abelard,” such a devastating cautionary tale. “Now I’m in my head, wonderin’ how it ends…I try to wipe my mind just so I feel less insane,” Grande sings on the title track, directly invoking the film’s plot but only vaguely acknowledging that some memories are irreversible.

Ariana Grande is moving on from a broken heart in the music video for her new single “we can’t be friends (wait for your love).”
The 30-year-old pop star unleashed her new album eternal sunshine on Friday (March 8). She celebrated the occasion with the new visual, which co-stars Evan Peters and pulls inspiration from Jim Carey‘s movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Head inside to watch the music video…
In it, Ariana plays a character named Peaches who schedules an appointment at Brighter Days Inc. The goal? To erase memories of her time with her ex, played by Evan.
The emotional video, directed by Christian Breslauer, documents the challenges of moving on after heartbreak and the pain of letting go. However it, also captures the exes coming out on the other side.
Fans already have a lot of theories about who Ariana is singing about on the song.

Ariana Grande gets the full Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind treatment in the Evan Peters-starring music video for her new song, “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love).”
The video, directed by Christian Breslauer, arrives on the release day of Ariana Grande’s new album, eternal sunshine. Following the concept from Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman’s 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Ariana Grande undergoes a medical procedure to erase the memories she has with her ex (Evan Peters).
She clings to certain material items that remind her of the memories — a teddy bear from one of their first dates, a necklace that he gave her — but eventually, the weight behind those items is erased. Both Grande and Peters also reprise the 2004 film’s iconic snow angel scene. The video ends with Grande completing the procedure (despite some emotional resistance), her walking past Peters,...

Ariana Grande’s seventh album begins with a question she spends the rest of the album trying to answer: “How can I tell if I’m in the right relationship?” Five years ago, on her landmark album on Thank U, Next, it seemed certain that she would have that question figured out by now; in the bridge of that album’s title track, she sang about hoping that when she would eventually walk down the aisle it would be her first and last time.

Jim Carrey's serious roles in The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine Sunshine of the Spotless Mind showcased his dramatic talent beyond his comedic reputation. Movies like Liar Liar highlight Carrey's ability to combine comedy with deeper emotions. Despite his success in comedy, Jim Carrey's potential as a dramatic actor was largely untapped in his career.
Jim Carrey's acting career has been built on a foundation of zany characters and off-beat comedy, but two of his movies on Rotten Tomatoes have been scored in such a way that they force his acting abilities to be seen in a new light. Although some of Jim Carrey's best movies show the fun-loving side of the actor, there's a subset of his back catalog that has him appear in more dramatic roles. Some of these alternative projects have been fairly hit-and-miss, but others have resulted in some of the best performances of Carrey's career.

If you're making a list of the greatest film acting debuts of all time, Kate Winslet's unnervingly ecstatic portrayal of Juliet Hulme in Peter Jackson's "Heavenly Creatures" better be at or near the top of the list -- and you should absolutely tether it to co-star Melanie Lynskey's startling debut as Pauline Parker in the same fantastic movie. You can't set the bar any higher than this, and all the two actors have done over the last 30 years is meet or surpass our expectations.
While Lynskey ultimately found her groove as a versatile and rousingly effective character actor, Winslet's career skyrocketed to superstardom in 1997 when she landed the role of Rose in James Cameron's disaster epic "Titanic." Her red-hot romance with Leonardo Di Caprio's dashing Jack granted her cinematic immortality, at which point she was faced with the daunting challenge of living up to mainstream moviegoers' expectations.

Out of all the ways John Krasinski could've followed up his success on the monster horror franchise "A Quiet Place," I don't think anyone foresaw him combining his powers with those of Ryan Reynolds for a high-concept fantasy about imaginary friends. What's more, the marketing for "If" -- a title that has surely already caused no small amount of grief for Seo analysts -- has been somewhat miraculously snark-free. In point of fact, it's hard to watch its trailers without waiting for Reynolds to abruptly knock against the fourth wall or quip about the giant purple creature voiced by Steve Carell. Yet, even in a Super Bowl preview cheekily throwing it back to one of Krasinski's most memorable pranks as Jim on "The Office," the joke is never on the film itself.

It’s ironic that memory is the central theme of Piero Messina’s Berlin Competition title “Another End,” when so many of its twists and turns are so directly lifted from other films that it feels like you’ve seen them before; even watching it for the first time feels like rewatching. But if that makes this elegiac literalization of the timeless theme of “what is grief but love persevering?” a rather edgeless experience it’s not a wholly unpleasant one. Less designed to provoke than to soothe, perhaps the very familiarity of much of the movie is a virtue, letting us enjoy its sleek surfaces safe in the knowledge that there’s nothing much lurking in the depths to alarm us.
Indeed, the story’s central alarming incident has happened some time before the film even begins: a car crash for which Sal (Gael García Bernal) believes he was...

Queen Latifah expresses openness to making a sequel to the 2004 movie Taxi, which she starred in alongside Jimmy Fallon. Despite receiving poor reviews, Taxi was a commercial success, grossing $71.2 million against its $25 million budget.
