Could have been a classic had the handling been better
Peter_Young21 October 2021
Okay, this might be an exaggeration, no doubt, but I watched this film many years ago and I remember how deeply affected I was by the story. Obviously I chose to overlook the flaws, the many Hindi-film tropes, the melodramatic writing and delivery, the poor direction. For one, the sister who's raped and loses her mental sanity is corny to the hilt. At the same time, you end up feeling for her in a way. But the story, its larger-than-life and extreme dichotomy between the good and evil, its strong moral stand, and the intense cruelty of the caricature villains, makes the entire thing watchable as a show.

Aag, with all its extraordinary absurdities, is not even a 'so-bad-it's-good' kind of movie. It could have worked like a true action drama the absurdity of which is its intentional strength. Instead, it tells a story which in the hands of a better director could have become quite a classic village tale. Govinda takes on quite an uncommon role and does it with dedication, but is one-dimensional. His leading ladies are quite okay, and so is the actress playing his sister. Shakti Kapoor does a very good job in this ultra-villainous turn. I wish the film was handled better, its ending is quite ridiculous in how unreal it is, but the overall thing is enjoyable.

Serious Stuff...Very Good film

Aag, meaning fire as in the fire pain in the heart. Its a serious movie with action, drama and a little comedy. As the title mentions, its the story of Govinda, who stays silent and looks angry all the way through. Nobody knows why he is like that, but as the movie follows, you find out that he is looking after his mentally pregnant sister, who was raped by a corrupt Police officer, who was also responsible for the death of his Girlfriend. Govinda, went through many series of torture and police brutality. This is among Govinda's finest and underrated work, delivering a Brilliant performance. Shilpa Shetty is the annoying undercover police, but her sexy good looks doesn't bother you. The very beautiful and sexy Sonali Bendre is Govinda's girlfriend delivering a great performance. Shakti Kapoor is the corrupt and violent police, in a superb performance full of venom. This is a fine film, worth the watch.

Enjoyable film

In 1994 it was enjoyable although revenge sagas and brutal rapes were common in that era. This one is purely to see Govinda's versatile performance.

govinda is a serious role

Most of the govinda movies I've seen are from a time when he had packed on some weight and was doing full out comedy in a series of movies ending in "No. 1". I thought this would be one of his typical comic capers. He was really convincing in a serious role and I can definitely see why he was a bankable hero during this time. He looked really handsome in both looks. Shilpa's character was reminiscent of her character in rishtey. Sonali was ok for a newcomer although there isn't much for her to do. The songs are a bit below average. The ending is a little rushed but overall a good Bollywood film for a Friday night. Definite must watch if you are a fan of chichi.

A very good film . Govinda nailed his role . Every supporting actor performed well including Hoga Kapoor,Shilpa Shetty and Gulshan Grover. Shakti Kapoor as villain has done exceptionally well.
