Yes I am the type that reads the back of the DVD case but I never expected what I didn't get. I loved the images of the twisted fairy tale but, the movie seemed like someone had yanked a page out of a Gothic teenagers dreams. I did not understand what the title had to do with the story. It seems that the writer of the film scammed some imagery from Francesca Leah Bloch. This movie seemed to have jumped off the twisted pages of this woman's retelling of fairy tales in modern day terms. All the princesses are schizophrenic and the princes are handsome, screwed up and bipolar. Good luck if you can make sense out of this hodgepodge of victorian furniture, hippy rags and twisted sisters. Toward the end I did begin to understand the older sister and the description of obsession on the back of the box.

Silence Becomes You was most likely one of the worst movies that I have seen of all time. The cast did a wonderful job, however the plot was confusing and not very entertaining. The picture and quality of the movie overall was good, however the messy plot, and the confusing events don't make up for the time I lost watching the movie. If the events weren't so scrambled, and more was explained, I feel the movie could have been a hell of a lot more interesting. I watched the movie, sadly, three times, just to understand the little bit of sense in which I made of it, and honestly, the only way I would ever watch this movie again is if I were to get it for free, or if I was locked in a windowless room for the rest of my life with nothing else to do.

If you do not want to be the maddest person in the universe today, I beg of you..DO NOT watch this pathetic movie, seriously!! The director & the producer needs to be shot for this one! I had to literally come here & hope to God someone explained what was it I just watched! And I fought to keep one eye open so I didn't fall asleep on it. My dream probably would have been better! Then when I found out what the movie was about I realized I was better off not knowing! I can't believe someone even put this out on DVD much less a known actress was in it. I guess it's like my neighbor said, Silverstone hadn't made a movie in so long that she must have picked something with lines a 6th grader could memorize so she could pay her water bill. Let me tell all of you just how flimsy & pathetic this movie is, it makes that corny Honeymooners & Cat Woman look GOOD! I usually write the names of the new movies down then come here & read everyone's opinions before renting it. It NEVER fails, when I don't do that I get a piece of cr-p! I want my money back, whaaa sniff-sniff!!!!

I'd like to get this movie in a very much artistic way. The two sisters issue is a reflection of an experiment that a father did on his children. The alchemist topic in the movie is relevant just in the main history, but the personality of two sisters that connect each other and link their own thoughts (even with their dad's thoughts)is definitely a wonderful description of what the real art is. I remember the many scenes of Grace painting, and the messages the father left into her consciousness; all of that meaning that the art is life and life is art (a real paradox of an artist). This is just an example of many scenes in the film.
I conclude that the movie is really worth to be seen, specially if you are an artist (musician, painter, writer, or any kind of art you do)

Two sisters, Violet (Alicia Silverstone) and Grace (Sienna Guillory), very bounded to each other, live in an old mansion with ghosts of their past. Violet meets Luke (Joe Anderson) in a bar, and brings him to her mansion. Along the days, she seduces him, and they have sex many times as part of a plot with Grace. When Luke decides to leave the house with Violet, Grace tries to avoid, and Luke finds that they are trapped in the place.
This lame film gave me the sensation that a part is missing. I saw it on DVD, but if it was on VHS, I would believe that the tape might have broken and missed the part with the explanation of the plot of Grace and Violet. I am not sure if the screenplay is awful, or the characters are badly developed or both, but I was not able to understand the confuse story. The soundtrack in many parts is annoying, Alicia Silverstone is not sexy in the sex scenes, therefore nothing but the beautiful cinematography works in this awful direction. I would not recommend this flick even in a rainy and boring Saturday afternoon in Rio de Janeiro. My vote is two.

This was a waste of 5 bucks at the rental store.... although I thought the cinematography was really good, the movie itself is crap. Poor story line and it is way too drawn out. If you have nothing better to do, then it might be worth the time, but for me it wasn't even a good waste of an hour and a half! I can't believe that Ms. Silverstone even took this role. Such a waste of her talents...

Artistic film went astray

After reading previous negative reviews I mistook this film to be a misunderstood artistic film which happened to mistakenly find its way into the hands of die-hard wrestle-mania fans (take no offense please). Unfortunately for 'Silence Becomes You' any negative comments are overwhelmingly justified! Luckily for (and it is obvious while watching the film) Stephanie Sinclaire not a tremendous amount of time was spent on the story line. Lacking in all entertainment value, any audience member who successfully completes the film does so for the sheer bragging rights of watching what is to be perhaps the worst film of all time.

seriously.. It was VERY LONG and didn't make a lot of sense. The plot was not there at all. I actually sat through the whole thing thinking that eventually something would make sense and maybe there would be a great ending, but there isn't a clear plot line at all and it's hard to be sure as to what they are even to try to get across to the audience.
I guess it's one of those artsy type movies that only "certain people" understand. It probably should have been done independent or something, so that these "certain people" could all view it and put their pinky to this lip and say "interesting". Don't waste any time or money on this one!

This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I rented it because Alicia Silverstone is in it and I thought it might be good. Don't waste your time. The movie is poorly constructed in meaning and understanding. Rent Monster-In-Law and get a good laugh. The movie is basically confusing. You have to make your own conjectures as to the whys and wherefores in this movie. Since the point is muddled, the whole movie is muddled. An old Sherlock Holmes movie is better constructed than this movie. Alicia Silverstone could have chosen a much better movie than this one to prove that she is now a grown-up. Her earlier films are much better than this one even if they are more juvenile in nature.

It was an interesting premise for a movie, however, it had the tendency to lose it's impetus by attempting to be too art house. It captured the interest by keeping the watcher intent on working out exactly who was trying to achieve what and with whom but, more importantly why? It made for a kind of Charmed meets tortured soul effect, not, it has to be said a great combination for a movie. The dynamic of the sisters with their warped control freak father was nicely worked, leaving the watcher to draw their own conclusions about exactly what he got up to when mom wasn't looking.

We rented this movie in hopes of watching something entertaining, instead we found that we had rented a flop. It was like watching a B rated movie on an A rated budget. The plot was somewhat perplexing. As I write this 14 hours after the movie, I am still unsure as to what I saw. The movie is full of psychosis. I am still unsure as to whether some of them were ghosts or just figments of their imagination.
On the plus side, I felt that Alicia Silverstone played her character well. She seemed to come across as a lady with complex issues. Joe Anderson did not come across well though. I felt that he left much to be desired. I do not recommend this movie.

I caught the last 30 minutes of "Silence Becomes You" on cable and was intrigued enough to order the DVD. The DVD would have benefited from a director's commentary as the film is annoyingly vague at times (even to me) and I imagine that most viewers would welcome some clarification.
My favorable first impression was probably a combination of the great production design, the excellent acting for the camera direction, and the understated yet inventive editing. It was filmed in Lithuania in HD video (said to be the first feature film with 100% digital cinematography), a technique that allowed the production staff to see each days rushes immediately so they could make timely rewrite and re-shoot decisions.
"Silence Becomes You" was written and directed by Stephanie Sinclaire, the Associate Artistic Director of the internationally known Kings Head Theatre in London. Her stage background shines through the production as all three of her main characters are given a nice multi-dimensionality. They are all flawed yet to varying degrees sympathetic.
Take the assorted plot summaries and comments about this film with a certain grain of salt. It is about two 20-something half-sisters (if you credit certain statements and make an inference) who are still living together in the estate where they grew up. Alicia Silverstone plays Violet and Sienna Guillory plays Grace.
They have decided that Violet should have a baby and lure a roguish drifter named Luke (Joe Anderson) to the estate for the purpose of getting her pregnant. There is a fourth character, the house, which exercises a considerable hold and influence over the two women. This relationship is represented by frequent memory flashbacks to their father and their childhood. The two young actresses who play them as little girls (most likely chosen for their physical similarity to Silverstone and Guillory) are convincingly directed by Sinclaire and their frequent appearances give the film a lyrical quality.
As in Terrance Mallick's "Days of Heaven" (1978), the four principal characters represent the four elements; earth (the house), water (Violet), fire (Grace), and wind (Luke). The principal dynamic being how the least transitory element holds the three elusive elements in place. Most of the complaints about the film seem to center on Sinclaire's frequent misdirection, the viewer only knows what she wants you to know and when she wants you to know it. There does seem to be vagueness for the sake of vagueness, or at least in the service of introducing complexity to a relatively simple story. The girls have a degree of paranormal skills and there is a strong mental connection between them; qualities that their alchemist father (lead into gold is his metaphor for reproduction) went to great trouble to develop. Sinclaire violates the language of film with this and with her inconsistent flashback techniques; confusing the viewer about what is real, what is mystical, what is a dream, and what is simply a memory. So the film is unable to decide between being a ghost story or a psychological melodrama. I discovered great images in this movie - they show a stunning set and production design with tons of details, the colors are awesome and you can really experience the new technique of shooting digitally uncompressed in these aspects. The three actors are doing a good job and the story has some interesting complex layers to discover. The role of Alicia Silverstone might not be the one that some people expect here, but she offers a new side with a totally new look and far away from all that we're used to. The two sisters seem to live in a kind of a fairy-tale-world and this draws the attention of the viewer through the whole movie. If you like the impression of great pictures in a movie, then watch this one!
Wow. This is so bad, you SHOULD watch it.

What happens when a set of poorly dressed twins allow a wandering psycho to stay in their creepy mansion? A whole lotta wackiness! This movie leaves the viewer questioning many things. Such as... why do these people NEVER leave their house? Why do they want to sacrifice each other? Why was this movie EVER made? This is honestly one of the worst movies ever created. It makes absolutely no sense, the characters have no depth, and Alicia Silverstone's childlike voice and "quirky" expressions stopped being cute sometime in the late nineties. On the plus side, it was actually SO shockingly horrible, I forced a few friends to watch it, just for a good laugh. So, if you like movies that try way too hard to have a "gothic" vibe, starring has-been and little known actors, then this is a film for you!

I think the point of this movie is that Violet wants a life in the outside world but she is so close with Grace she will never be able to leave her. The entrance of Luke into Violet's life begins to stir things and makes her question herself; she has this great bond with her sister but she loves Luke & he can give her the life she wants. Through the movie Grace seems to be having the flashbacks about how she always has to be the winner and she can never fail. I think it's this blind and selfish drive that destroys Violet since it is expected that Grace would be as protective of Violet as Violet is of her. I still didn't understand the physical connection they shared as well like how they can feel the other sister's pain. I also completely hate Grace for ruining the chance of a happy ending for Violet and Luke.
Don't take it for an arty movie, it simply is not

Now , we have the 2 sisters and the drifter. why are they there no one knows, what exactly is the relation between the 2 sisters, well it is up to you to decide because simply the script writer did not know.Such a pretentious movie that may fool some people as being an arty one.Even the love scenes lacked any chemistry or beauty , you just want to fast forward all through the whole movie. the material they had at hand with the three characters triangle had a lot of potentials but all gone to waste with a badly written and directed movie The only good thing about it was the wardrobe, a very colourful assortment of their parents clothes and of course the soundtrack .so if that would tempt you to see it you go ahead or just simply stay away

How anyone can sit through this exhausting and ultimately irritating film is beyond my grasp. Paper thin acting, jump cuts, and laughable intimations of high art and drama make jack a dull boy. Sex scenes were horrid, think late 80's cine-max of humping each others stomachs, interlaced with Luke warm giggly satin sheet cutaways. I don't care about the characters. I don't care about the story. I can't buy the symbolism or implied "uniqueness" of the piece. Dreary, annoying, juvenile attempt at filmaking. After an hour and a half of this fetid piece of tripe, I too, was ready to ponder suicide, or at the very least return to my local "BallBuster" video and demand my four dollars back. There's only two reasons any carbon based life-form would want to see this movie. Firstly, and with a higher probability of occurrence, you want to see Alicia Silverstone do the wild thing, as the cover and summary would suggest. Secondly, you really want to sink your undergraduate liberal arts teeth into a potentially stimulating film. mark my words... you will all be disappointed. Put that turd back on the shelf where it belongs and pick up "Donnie Darko," or "The Governess."

Basically, i can just leave you all with this brief comment. "This movie is awful. Don't even bother buying it, renting it or hell even watching it on TV for FREE. This movie is pathetic". Of course we can see that Alicia Silverstone is a good actress, no matter how whacked out a role she chooses. But thats the end of "Silence Becomes You" right there. From beginning to end, you have NO CLUE what is going on. The movie also does not make any sense. If you don't listen carefully to all the whispers and flashbacks then you are completely more lost than you were from the beginning. I really expected this to be a "Thriller", but there is nothing to even thrill about.
This movie is just a waste of time. It pretty much wastes an hour and a half of you life. I honestly think watching paint dry is more interesting than this movie. As a huge movie buff, skip this piece of garbage and watch something else.

I've rarely had a more unpleasant experience watching a movie than watching this one. The two sisters are Seriously Messed Up. We know that from, what, minute 3 of the movie? We never get much past that. Despite an hour and a half of material, much of it laden with seemingly significant flashbacks, we never quite get to what the hell is actually behind all this gauzy art-house pretentiousness.
It's great to enjoy a movie, and clearly some people do enjoy this one. I'm happy for you if you're one of them. Seriously, though, if you are inspired by this movie to go out and make something similar, please consider making the following improvements on it so that the rest of us can enjoy it too:
* At some point, get around to explaining the premise. We want to know what is happening. Being a tease is fine for the first X minutes of a movie, but not for the entire thing.
* Let the audience connect (as in relate) to your characters sooner or later. Otherwise, we can't care about them. If they aren't real to us, their emotions are irrelevant to us.
* Offer something beyond unpleasantness and tragedy, or prepare for obscurity (meaning, we aren't coming). We don't always need a shiny, happy ending, but let some sunshine at least threaten to break through somewhere along the line. Pure bleakness is always going to be a tough sell. Life already offers us that for free, if we simply go the wrong direction. Depicting it as invincible is depressing -- and unrealistic.
If those kinds of major failures don't throw you off, maybe you'll like this movie. Otherwise, trust the low rating. It's deserved.

Apparently written, directed and produced by someone with severe mental problems. Undoubtedly a person, or persons, accustomed to bad narcotic induced "trips"! Person, or persons, suffering from illusions of intellectualism without any concept of vision! No reasonable beginning, no end and nothing in the middle. This is a movie that one would watch just to find out if it can get any worse... and then find out that it can and does.
There is probably some attempt to appeal to pedophiles in the presentations, but even that is iffy!

As the movie world has progressed our creative minds have gained an over abundance structure, and boundaries have suffered loss of motivation. "Silence Becomes You" Is a film created out of pure apathy to those who are too lazy to think or attempt to think for themselves. We have Movies that tell us every step of the way, What kind of fun is that? We have no room to think, or to read between the lines, When we are told, and given baby steps to the resolution. When we can predict..anything it leaves out the mystery, and the climactic progression. If you could predict every single step of your life, or your neighbors life how much room would that give you to learn, fail, and succeed?
When it comes to a movie that you actually have to think about you tend to get upset because the plot and the story line isn't handed over to you on a silver platter. What is the use of a movie that you aren't inspired by? When we think, our mind expands, when we view, our mind Is merely molded. We have all been molded to believe that If a movie doesn't have the 4 steps that is is crap.. Is it really?
I myself found it difficult but exciting, It was completely by accident that I rented this movie, but When I was done, I wanted to experience their lives first hand. Two sisters, Grace and Violet (Sienna Guillory and Alicia Silverstone respectively) who are fairly reclusive take in a drunken thieving sort (Joe Anderson) to stay with them awhile. Unbeknownst to him, they have plans for him, plans that might unravel when it seems Violet may be getting closer to him, much to Grace's chagrin. This is a fairly well-acted (for the first half at least until Sienna starts to madly overact) women's Lifetime-esquire melodrama under the guise of a thriller. A tad too estrogen driven for most, yet solid enough. Nothing I'd personally watch again though.

While I agree that the plot of this movie is sporadic, I disagree that it's illogical and "shitty." The two sisters, to me, represented opposites. Revenge vs. Forgiveness, Giving in vs. Overcoming, etc. After all, the father said at one point, "When the black of destruction and white light of creation come together, they do not create rain but all of the colors in the rainbow." The sisters', especially Grace's, comments seemed to prove that they were obsessed with the past, with an imaginary life. They were in love with fiction, with magic, not with the disappointment and cyclic routine of normal life. They were in love with a dream.
I'm sure someone will say, "That interpretation is retarded. The movie is a horror an nothing more." However, I rarely find that anything is one thing and not another. This movie is a psychological thriller, but can it not have some underlying themes as well? The world is rarely black and white. (Yes, that last sentence is a reference to my opinion of the conclusion of the movie.)

For me, 'Silence Becomes You' is an example of why the production period in filming is so important.
The idea itself is a very interesting one: Two sisters, haunted by the memory of their eccentric father, decide to ensnare a drifter for an unspecified purpose.
It is an intriguing setup, that has potential to go into some very spine-chilling directions - and to the film's credit, when it does it is not only suspenseful but wonderfully surreal.
The problem, however, is that what happens in-between these moments are disjointed with what seem to be big chunks of the story left out - implied supernatural elements that don't go anywhere & shifts in tone and mood that immediately deflate whatever tension was built up, among other things.
The fact that there was a planned plot twist (in which the father would be revealed to be still alive) that got cut due to time restraints, is to me further proof that the film is not so much pretentious but incomplete.
All that aside, the film is skillfully edited and beautifully shot.
Leigh Lawson is nothing short of magnificent as the enigmatic father, standing out in the limited time he is on screen as a half-mad mix of Orson Welles and John Huston that was a delight to watch every time he appeared.
While it is far from being a magnificent film, the bones of one are most definitely in there.
Given a little more time in production (and perhaps a slight trimming down on it's more eccentric ideas), I have no doubt the 'Silence Becomes You' would have been a very successful first movie for the director.

I watched this on a lark on Showtime when I got home from work to kill a little time before bed. The description made it sound like an interesting taut thriller. Instead I was subjected to a meandering goofy ill-conceived premise with no meaty plot, but lots of artsy cinema shots.
This movie had that sort of pretentious "if you are smart enough you'll read our minds to get something from this drivel" delivery that I often got in college from overzealous gender-studies or other irrelevant liberal arts classes. You know the ones, they put half a breast on a piece of paper and you're supposed to get that it symbolizes a repressed woman held under a sheet of ice under the Eiffel Tower by Neptune-"how can you not see that? You must be stupid!"
Avoid this unless you REALLY REALLY want to see the actress who plays Grace "grace" you with her pleasant to look at upper half. Be forewarned, you'll have to get through about 3/5 of the movie to get there. Tivo it and fast forward. I'm only giving it a two for the assets you get to see about 3/5 of the way through the movie. Fast-forward is your friend!
