The late Robin Williams had the incredible and unmatched ability to make people laugh. His volcanic energy, genius delivery, and rapid impressions made him a household name. Williams’ immense success in the 1990s eventually opened the door for more serious films, including the tender Good Will Hunting and the fantastical What Dreams May Come. Not everything that came after was as well received or recognized, but Williams continued to pursue other genres outside of comedy. The actor had his fair share of dramatic performances to complement his comedic ones, but it was Williams’ sinister turn in 2002’s One Hour Photo that caught everyone off guard. No one was expecting Mrs. Doubtfire or Aladdin’s genie to star in such an unsettling psychological-thriller.

Pink Floyd recorded several all-time great classic rock songs. They also hid some underrated gems on their albums, but “Have You Got It Yet?” wasn’t one of them. Still, that tune reunited Pink Floyd’s three surviving members for a movie of the same name that looks at the band’s early history.
Pink Floyd reunited for the movie ‘Have You Got It Yet?’
Pink Floyd’s intraband relationships were rarely smooth sailing, even when the band reached its peak.
Bassist and chief songwriter Roger Waters and lead guitarist David Gilmour often found themselves on rocky ground. Waters fired keyboard player Rick Wright while recording The Wall and supplanted drummer Nick Mason with Andy Newmark on The Final Cut. The classic Pink Floyd lineup bitterly disintegrated after that latter album. The years and distance did little to thaw the frosty relationships.
Still, Have You Got It Yet? got Pink Floyd to reunite.

Pink Floyd had to wait before they became a classic rock success story. They wrote the song that predicted their breakthrough on The Dark Side of the Moon, and then their world changed. That album catapulted them to fame and the trappings of it. Bassist Roger Waters almost attacked a fan in 1967, which came a decade before his confrontation with a concert-goer inspired Pink Floyd’s last great album.
Roger Waters considered attacking a Pink Floyd fan a decade before he assaulted a concert-goer
After parting ways with their creative leader, Syd Barrett, in 1968, Pink Floyd waded through several years of mixed results as a psychedelic band. When they shifted gears and headed in a more prog-rock direction in the early 1970s, it sparked the fire that burned brightly for most of the decade.

Brick by brick, the feud between Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and David Gilmour has become one of the great tragicomedies in rock history. This week, a quarrel that has raged on and off (mostly on) since the mid-Eighties took another lurid turn when Gilmour’s wife, novelist and lyricist Polly Samson, accused Rogers of being “a Putin apologist”.
Waters has been catching flak over his repeated calls for the West to stop arming Ukraine in its war with Russia – and for his claims that he’s on a Ukrainian “kill list”. Just so nobody was in any doubt where Gilmour stood, the guitarist later backed his wife, tweeting: “Every word demonstrably true.”
Waters, who in 2020 accused Samson of using the Pink Floyd website as a platform for her literary career, hit back. “Roger Waters is aware of the incendiary and wildly inaccurate comments made about him on Twitter by...

Pom!! Pan Distribution in France has revealed a teaser trailer for the new zombie comedy from France titled Z (Comme Z) - which translates directly to Z (as in Z). This is also known as Final Cut, which is the title it had when it was announced as a premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Now its slated to premiere as the Opening Night film at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival - which is the perfect place to launch this hilarious, crazy fun zombie movie. Academy Award–winning writer-director Michel Hazanavicius brings one of the most innovative, joyful, and funniest love letters to film and filmmaking you'll ever see. It's a French remake of the Japanese box office hit One Cut of The Dead, going even deeper with its meta-ness by including the Japanese filmmakers watching them remake the film.

The Cannes Film Festival is always down to the wire, but this year’s edition has been especially nerve-wracking for anyone eager to make the cut. As the industry scrambles for some semblance of normalcy, the cinephile destination was inundated with last-minute submissions, as indicated by this week’s announcement of 47 films from around the world with the promise of more to come.
More than any other festival on the planet, Cannes aims to project an air of exclusivity to its selection, the sense that it truly has assembled the best of the best. That goal is often informed by an array of other practical factors, including the choices made by various distributors and sales agents to make certain films available, the seniority of filmmakers deemed “worthy” of a venerated competition section, and the festival’s predilection for certain regions of the world over others.

During the pandemic, no major film festival was all shook up more than Cannes, forced to cancel the 2019 event and shifting dates to mid-summer for an overstocked comeback event the following year. Now, this all-important showcase for global art cinema looks to be finding its feet again, thanks to a diverse lineup that includes everything from Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” to the directorial debut of his granddaughter, Riley Keough, whose “Beast” (co-directed by Gina Gammell) is set on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

In his first non-fiction book, literary-agent-turned-producer Charles Elton takes on a major topic: the first biography of “critically acclaimed then critically derided filmmaker Michael Cimino.” In “Cimino: The Deer Hunter, Heaven’s Gate, and The Price of a Vision,” Elton explores Cimino’s fraught legacy — including his two best known films, “The Deer Hunter” and “Heaven’s Gate” — and uses extensive interviews with Cimino’s peers, collaborators, enemies, and friends to explore and reevaluate a number of sprawling Hollywood myths.
In an excerpt below — available exclusively on IndieWire — Elton unpacks the real truth behind the persistent belief that Cimino’s epic (both in scale and in terms of financial failure) “Heaven’s Gate” led to the end of United Artists. The book is out today.

Just eight of 670 competition films over three years came from black filmmakers.
Black filmmakers are being significantly underrepresented in the main sections of the world’s major competitive film festivals, according to a Screen study of the last three years.
Screen has surveyed the main international competitions of the 14 A-category festivals to have held an edition in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
In 2018, just two of 226 films (0.88%) in these sections came from Black filmmakers, with the number at two of 223 (0.9%) in 2019, and four of 221 (1.81%) in 2021.
In total across the three years, only eight of 670 films (1.19%) came from Black filmmakers.
The figures are similar when considering the number of directors.

Agents, studio executives and movie lovers will resume their annual pilgrimage to Park City as the Sundance Film Festival, the preeminent showcase for indie film, returns to in-person premieres this January. The 2021 version unfolded entirely digitally as a concession to Covid-19.
What they will find in the that thin mountain air is the standard collection of films from auteurs and established directors such as Michel Hazanavicius, Ramin Bahrani, and Lena Dunham, as well as blazingly original works from newcomers whose names are currently unknown, but whose career trajectories will be turbocharged by the cachet and attention that comes with a Sundance debut.
But they will also discover important changes to the program and the way that movies are shared with the wider public, the most significant of which is Sundance’s decision to debut the films it selected both in theaters and on its digital platform. The hybrid nature of...

The Sundance Institute has announced today the showcase of new independent work selected across the Feature Film, Indie Episodic, and New Frontier categories for the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. The Festival will take place both in-person in Park City, Salt Lake City and the Sundance Mountain Resort in Utah and through enhanced online ventures, plus the return of the fest’s Satellite Screens venues.
The festival gets started in Park City with eleven opening night movies, including Jesse Eisenberg’s directing debut, relationship comedy “When You Finish Saving the World,” Brazilian filmmaker Gabriel Martins’ “Marte Um” (“Mars One”), and “The Princess,” a documentary profile of Diana Spencer. Notably, documentaries suffuse all the sections, beyond the usual U.S. Documentary and World Cinema competition lineups. Like last year, the Premiere section is packed with non-fiction, including a movie from Ramin Bahrani, “2nd Chance,” about the inventor of the bulletproof vest; even the Midnight selection has one,...

In 1982, a noir-esque thriller called Blade Runner quietly changed science fiction cinema forever. The reasons for this are numerous, and those explanations could (and have) filled several books. In the film, we’re not told exactly how “advanced robot evolution” intermingled with “genetic engineers” to create the Nexus 6 Replicants, but the film works anyway because we’re only interested in what the Replicants are doing right now.
Wondering why exactly science fiction film aficionados are so obsessed with Blade Runner is a similar paradox: It may not matter if we can explain the cult obsession and it’s probably just healthier if we accept it. Even Blade Runner canon is a little murky. Was there one Replicant fried in that electrical field or two? Depends on the cut of the film! No other science fiction film has demanded such hyper-granular scrutiny, partially because no other science fiction film has had as many versions of itself.

Seven projects will be introduced to an industry audience at the first Euroregion Naen pitch competition, held on Tuesday Sept. 14 at Pamplona’s Conecta Fiction. “Being a first edition, the projects are pretty diverse and in divergent phases of development. But behind them are innovative visions and interesting propositions,” says Ana Herrera Isasi, head of Navarre’s Strategic Digital and Audiovisual Projects Department. A drill down on the titles:

The hype for The Righteous, actor Mark O’Brien’s feature debut as a writer and director, was certainly being cranked up to eleven ahead of its premiere at this years’ Fantasia. The festival’s publicity going as far as comparing it to Night of the Hunter and Passolini’s Teorema before saying it was “destined to become a Canadian horror classic”.
Those kinds of claims raise some high expectations. The kind of expectations that are hard for any film, let alone a debut feature, to live up to. The kind that can hurt a film that’s good, even excellent, but not a new masterpiece. Can The Righteous live up to the claims being made for it?
Shot in stunning black and white, The Righteous begins at the sparsely attended funeral of the daughter of Frederic and Ethel Mason.

Three years after the first movie theater reopened in Saudi Arabia – following removal of a religion-related ban – the kingdom has become the top theatrical market in the Middle East and is turning into a major driver for Arabic film production.
“At the moment Saudi is on a different path from the rest of the world,” says David Hancock, an analyst at London-based Omdia, which sees this new market as having the potential to be ranked among the top 10-15 territories for box office worldwide by 2024.

The Oscar-winning studio behind “Parasite” broke the ice at the 2021 virtual Sundance Film Festival sales market.
The indie company has acquired the documentary “Flee,” also an official selection of Cannes 2020, in a competitive situation after the movie’s Thursday premiere.
