While it’s been available since last month on DirecTV exclusively, A24 and DirecTV will release The Blackcoat’s Daughter in theaters and On Demand March 31st, 2017. Osgood Perkin’s stunning feature film stars Kiernan Shipka, Emma Roberts, Lucy Boynton, and James Remar, and it explores demonic possession and the tragedy that follows such a horrific presence.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with one of the producers for The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Bryan Bertino, who is no stranger (pun intended) to the world of modern horror. In 2008, Bertino’s directorial debut, The Strangers became a breakout success, taking in over $80 million worldwide and helping to launch his career as both a filmmaker and a producer.
During the interview, Bertino discussed working with Perkins on The Blackcoat’s Daughter, the struggles they faced throughout the four-year process of getting the project made, and how the initial script jumped...

Another Super Bowl in the books!
While for many, Super Bowl Li was all about witnessing the clash between the high-powered Atlanta Falcons offense, and the impeccably disciplined New England Patriots.... the rest of us really just showed up for what happens between the downs.
Exclusive: Miranda Kerr Talks Wedding Plans, Lady Gaga's Halftime Show & Orlando Bloom Ahead of Super Bowl Ad
Here are the 17 best commercials that went big for the big game.
1. Audi, "#DriveProgress"
It was hard to give a tearjerker the top spot, but this one just hit our hearts in exactly the right way. Images of a boxcar-racing daughter paired with voiceover messages of gender equality cruises definitely made us feel the hardest.
2. Buick, Starring Cam Newton and Miranda Kerr

The year’s Ford Super Bowl commercial is all about the voice inside you that tell you to “Go Further.” It starts with a young boy stuck on a ski-lift, a man left dangling from a roof after his ladders fall, a girl mournfully eyeing her kite stuck in a tree and a man struggling to pull off a tight wesuit. We’ve all had one of those days when you can’t open a jar, lose your keys and get stuck out in the rain or find yourself wrestling a jumper that is determined not to come off! Ford are channelling the idea...read more...

The Super Bowl is a collective television event like no other. Not only do the night’s ratings inevitably top the year, but everyone is actually gathering together at the same time to watch live. With so many eyeballs glued to a TV screen in real time, it’s no wonder the marketing gurus bring out their best stuff for Super Bowl Sunday — or at least they try.
Below is a running list — updated throughout the big game — of the best and worst Super Bowl spots we’ve seen, with a brief review and grade for each. Let us know what you think in the comments, and vote in the poll for the best and worst ads when the game ends.

‘The Leftovers’: An Oral History of the Finale’s Karaoke Scene, from Damon Lindelof & Justin Theroux
“One of the things I’m most proud of is the sequence with Kevin Garvey singing “Homeward Bound.” — Mimi Leder
“The karaoke scene was probably the most deeply uncomfortable scene I had to shoot.” — Justin Theroux
“If you try to explain to someone, ‘Here’s what happened in the finale of “The Leftovers,”‘ you sound insane.” — Damon Lindelof
[Spoilers for “The Leftovers” Season 2 are below.]
The second season of Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta’s magnificent exploration of belief, faith and family included its fair share of bold moments. Its opening sequence tracked a cave woman giving birth in rural Texas. Its first episode barely featured its main stars, shifting instead to a whole new family in a brand new location. And then came “International Assassin,” the season’s eighth episode that tracked Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) into the afterlife; an afterlife set in a hotel where he donned a suit, became an assassin and had to...

Five years and 51 weeks -- that's when I was added to the Slackerwood website, although my official first article about a beloved made-in-Texas film, True Stories, was actually published on June 24, 2009. Coincidentally, my first Slackerwood-related article, "Coffee and Cigarettes at the Alamo," was written two years earlier on June 25, 2007 for the Alamo Downtown Blog-a-Thon, co-hosted by Slackerwood and Blake Ethridge of formerly of Cinema is Dope and now the Museum of Cinema.
Sharing my personal experience of handling the Coffee and Cigarettes director Jim Jarmusch at the original Alamo Drafthouse (on Colorado) during SXSW Film Festival 2004 was truly a defining moment in my career in film journalism. That same year I recall Louis Black assisting at the door at a special midnight screening of Hellboy at the Paramount, with star Ron Perlman talking to fans outside the theater until the wee hours of the morning.

As anyone who's spent time on digital dating portals knows, unicorns are in. Referring to the rarely seen, conventionally hot, usually white bisexual girl of legend who's up for a threesome, a “unicorn” is sought by hetero couples and straight men alike (though according to myth, a unicorn can only be tamed by a female virgin). Her existence, the embodiment of a pornographic cool-girl fantasy, is, like a unicorn's, doubtful and extremely desirable. Go further back in natural-history texts, from the centuries when they were believed to be real, and the legends become even more powerful and strange: A unicorn's ivory heals wounds and wards off evil; those who drink from its horn are cured of illness; a sip of its blood grants eternal life and damnation.

There's a limit to how much Matthew McConaughey can be featured on posters for a single movie, it seems. This week appears to be "Interstellar" one-sheet week, with two arriving so far featuring the actor walking on a planet and looking up at the stars, and now comes another, which boldly puts no one from the starry cast on it at all. Sorry, Topher Grace! Instead, this one brings us the athletic-shoe-style slogan "Go Further," with a space thingy moving at tremendous speed towards the edge of the galaxy. Why? Because we all ruined the Earth, and now, the last resort is to go to outer space to find another planet that humanity can destroy live on. Or something like that. Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Ellen Burstyn, John Lithgow, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, Wes Bentley, Bill Irwin, Mackenzie Foy, and David Gyasi are joining McConaughey on his voyage. "Insterstellar" opens on November 7th.

There's no point in lying: The pilot for BBC America's "Intruders" makes almost no sense to me. It's 45 minutes of enticing teasing, jumping around from location to location as characters we've barely met commit suicide or flee from other characters we've never met, some holding cards embossed with the number "9." There are enigmatic declarations about characters not being who they appear to be or not being who once they were. There's a preternaturally wise -- and therefore terrifying -- child (Millie Brown's Madison). There's an Oscar winning actress (Mira Sorvino), who you assume was lured by character details beyond the pilot. There are multiple familiar and well-regarded British actors (James Frain and John Simm) possibly playing American and therefore seeming suspicious. If you enjoy the teasing, you'll be champing at the bit waiting for a second episode to maybe or maybe not get to the business of explaining things.

Rocksmith 2014 Edition, the sequel to the self-teaching guitar experience from 2011, is being released next Tuesday and it’ll be armed with 55 songs. Ubisoft released the entire tracklist ahead of the October 22nd launch today and Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC gamers will be treated to the likes of Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, Queen and The Police, among other top artists from the golden years of rock.
Ubisoft also announced that downloadable songs purchased for the first game will be compatible with Rocksmith 2014 Edition. There will also be the option to import the disc-based songs from the original Rocksmith to play in the new sequel, but there will be a nominal fee charged for the privilege.
Rocksmith 2014 Edition allows gamers to learn how to play a real guitar or bass guitar by plugging an instrument in to their gaming console. The game determines the skill level of the player and adjusts the difficulty of lessons accordingly.

For the truly serious cineaste, Joel Finler’s Hollywood Movie Stills: Art and Technique in the Golden Age of the Studios is a buffet of exquisite ironies. For one: that much of the history, the grandeur and the glitz, the behind-the-scenes grit and the red carpet glory associated with the moving picture have come to us through pictures that don’t move. One could argue that much of the glamour and mystique which defines Hollywood – at least the Hollywood of the Golden Age of the old studio system – is as much the result of the work of still photographers as the movies themselves. In some cases, the work of “stillmen” is all that remains of lost footage cut from movies still acclaimed today (as with Eric von Stroheim’s silent era classic, Greed [1924]), as well as entire movies lost through accident, poor storage, or even intentional destruction in an era...

Robert Altman was a regular at Cannes, starting with his Palme d’Or-winning Mash in 1970. The award was soon followed with nominations for other works, including Thieves Like Us and 3 Women, and then recognition as Best Director in 1992 with The Player. Five and a half years after his passing in 2006, the director returns to the festival again, this time as the subject of the authorized bio-doc Altman.

Plucky and talented Rachel Berry, whose big voice is matched by her big dreams of Broadway stardom, froze in the middle of her big, once-in-a-lifetime audition on a recent episode of Glee. I feel like the producers of the iconic pop culture Fox show wanted me to care. But in the words of Diana in the equally iconic Broadway show A Chorus Line, I felt nothing.
Glee is often considered a triumph of the new, youth-centric, liberal morality; representative of the Hollywood culture that has normalized open homosexual relationships and equality of the sexes. It has made tap-dancing, Broadway-belting kids seem cool, and poor Rachel is its center. She has been much put-upon by the popular crowd yet has often remained kind and caring. I like her, or at least I thought I did. So why should I feel nothing? Maybe it is because, in several important ways, Rachel is a very unpleasant person.

A year or so ago, while writing about the brilliant poster for Alain Resnais’s most recent film, Wild Grass, I was a little disparaging of other recent Resnais posters with their wacky ensemble montages. Go further back in Resnais' filmography, however, and there are some truly exceptional designs. The newly reopened Museum of the Moving Image is currently in the middle of “the most complete retrospective of Resnais’s films ever presented in New York,” which is reason enough to look back at some of this work.
Resnais’ first three features, Hiroshima, mon amour (1959), Last Year at Marienbad (1961) and Muriel (1963), groundbreaking masterpieces all, have inevitably inspired the most inventive and varied work. The stunning French grande for Muriel, above, is one of my favorites. Having not seen the film in a while I can’t tell if this is an unadulterated still from the film or not, but the...

It's been a while since James Wan got behind the camera for another dark tale of terror and mayhem. Thankfully the wait for his next film is just about over! Get ready for The Further!
The film is set to be produced by Jason Blum (Blumhouse Productions), Oren Peli (director of Paranormal Activity) and Steven Schneider (Room 101 Productions).
Though details are sparse at the moment, we did manage to track down the film's logline -- "A young family makes the terrifying discovery that the body of their comatose boy has become a magnet for malevolent entities while his consciousness lies trapped in the dark and insidious realm known as The Further."

Ron Mann’s Know Your Mushrooms initially appears to be an elaborate act of misdirection. Mann got psychedelic icons Flaming Lips to contribute new music to his film, and previously directed the stoner classic Grass and the Woody Harrelson-lectures-you-on-how-to-live monstrosity Go Further, so viewers can be excused for expecting a documentary about the more magical, psilocybin-happy side of the mushroom experience. Yet for its first half hour, Know Your Mushrooms seems to be exclusively about mushrooms of the non-hallucinogenic variety. It’s a giddy infomercial for the misunderstood fungi, which Mann posits as the most wondrous substance since hemp (which ...

Ever see a movie trailer for the first time and just know afterwards that you will undoubtedly love the entire flick from start to finish before even seeing it? That’s how most horror fans reacted to the Zombieland trailer when it debuted and we have most definitely not been proved wrong. If you’ve ever attended Fantastic Fest you would see why it is perfectly understandable that critics, including myself, have gladly turned down press invites to a film they are dying to see because they want to watch a particular kind of movie they love with a particular type of crowd. That day finally arrived last night at the Paramount theatre in Austin, TX and the excitement was at a fever pitch.
I was on the red carpet for Fangoria and talked with the cast and Director Jesse Eisenberg who is absolutely thrilled at the reception the film’s been getting.

We have new trailers for your viewing pleasure, all for films set to play at SXSW next month in Austin, Texas.
Know Your Mushrooms. Documentarian Ron Mann previously made Go Further, Grass, and Comic Book Confidential; now he turns his probing gaze to "a hunt for the wild mushroom and the deeper cultural experiences attached to the mysterious fungi." Featuring a "neo-psychedelic soundtrack" by the Flaming Lips, animation, and archival footage, the doc promises a "longer, stronger trip," but don't worry: its running time is only 73 minutes. In that spirit, the teaser trailer, embedded above, is only 45 seconds long.

CANNES -- Chum City of Canada is selling the theatrical, TV and video rights to Go Further, a movie starring Woody Harrelson with an environmental message, as part of an "experiment," said Kevin Byles, vp and general manager of Chum Television International. "It's an experiment for us in selling theatrical rights as well as TV rights, and if it works, we'll consider some other theatrical products." Byles has ramped up Chum's distribution business to include third-party programs. He said the market has "a significant appetite" for entertainment and celebrity programming.
