Fans took to social media on New Year’s Eve to remind ABC censors of the mess they made when they went away and bleeped the performance of Alanis Morissette’s signature song, “You Oughta Know,” during Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest.
Morissette joined the cast of the Broadway play Jagged Little Pill, based on her ’90s mega-smash album of the same name, in a Times Square performance during the network’s annual New Year’s Eve special.
The lines “Is she perverted like me?” and “Would she go down on you in a theater?” were censored, as was a later expletive by cast member Lauren Patten.
Some of the reactions:
So much censorship on Alanis Morissette songs still… like 10 seconds of silence.

It was clear the place to be on New Year’s Eve was at ABC, as it conquered Tuesday night’s ratings by ringing in 2020 with Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest. The traditional two-part New Year’s Eve celebration won all six half-hours of primetime.
Part 1 of the special earned a 1.9 in the adults 18-49 demographic as 7.29 million viewers donned their novelty 2020 glasses to watch the special. This led into the second part, which skyrocketed to a 3.2 rating as 10.73 million viewers counted down the final minutes of 2019 with performances by Bts and Post Malone among others.
Despite being down from last year, ABC New Year’s Eve primetime lineup earned a 2.4 rating and 8.4 million viewers. New Year’s Rockin’ Eve was easily Tuesday’s No. 1 program in primetime and marked ABC strongest Tuesday in total viewers and ratings in the demo in nearly two years.

For many viewers, the annual Horton family Christmas is as important as their real-life Christmas celebrations.
The Horton tree trimming, the Christmas miracles, and the focus on family and love makes it feel like we're spending the holiday with close friends.
Unfortunately, though, Christmas felt like an afterthought on Days of Our Lives during the week of 12-23-19, leaving many long-time viewers disappointed.
Christmas Eve came close to being the kind of family story that viewers long for, but it didn't quite make it.
Some of the elements were there.
JJ got out of the hospital just in time to join the family, Julie worried that the party would be a flop only to learn that everyone was coming after all, and Jack and Jennifer were excited to put their ornaments side by side on the tree for the first time in years.

ABC won Christmas Day’s not-so-stiff primetime competition on Wednesday with its showdown between the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers. And while it was easily the highest-rated program of the night, the holiday matchup fell in preliminary ratings versus last year’s comparable NBA game, according to Nielsen.
The Clippers’ 111-106 victory over the Lakers is down 14% in the key adults 18-49 demographic (1.8 rating vs. 2.1 rating) from 2018’s primetime Christmas Day game between the Lakers and Golden State Warriors, per preliminary data.
We should note here Wednesday’s primetime NBA game was simulcast on ABC and ESPN and was one of five games the broadcast network and its cable sibling shared throughout Christmas Day.

Seth Rogen came on down to the second night of CBS’ holiday themed “Price is Right” special and it was enough for the network to capture the Monday ratings win, though most viewers were pre-occupied with preparing for Santa’s arrival this week.
CBS led the Christmas Eve Eve night in both the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demo and total viewers with an overall o.7 rating and 4.96 million total viewers. The special improved from Sunday with a 0.9 rating and 6.6 million viewers, and was the highest rated and most-watched show on Monday.
NBC edged out Fox and ABC for second on a night when neither of them aired original programming. NBC, which re-aired its “SNL” Christmas” clip special, finished with a 0.5 and 2.7 million viewers. Fox and ABC tying in the demo with a 0.4 apiece, though ABC took more viewers with 2.6 million to 1.9 million.

Have you been naughty or nice?
A Date By Christmas Eve was another adorable holiday movie that brought a little bit of magic into your life. We can all use some of that sometimes.
Fortunately, magic wasn't necessary to bring Chelsea and Fisher together. A little bit of honesty did the trick.
A Date By Christmas Eve is a decent title, but the original A Good List for Christmas was more suitable given the content.
It had an ongoing theme of "lists," from the company Chelsea worked for "The Good List" to the dating app she worked on, and of course, the appearance of Mrs. Kringle and her book of the good and naughty.
The date by Christmas Eve portion of the movie didn't exactly fit with the material. I'm assuming it referred to either Fisher bringing Chelsea to his family's home for the holidays or him showing up at her launch party.

Carey Mulligan is out for revenge, but not just the regular kind, the delicious kind. After a brief on-screen break, the actress is returning with “Promising Young Woman,” an intriguing-sounding new thriller that will give her not only plenty of emotion to mine, but great guns to go with it. Written and directed by “Killing Eve” showrunner Emerald Fennell in her feature directorial debut, the film is billed as “a delicious new take on revenge.” The film will premiere at Sundance in the festival’s high-powered Premieres section in January, with an April 17, 2020 theatrical release date already set.
Per its official synopsis: “Everyone said Cassie (Carey Mulligan) was a promising young woman… until a mysterious event abruptly derailed her future. But nothing in Cassie’s life is what it appears to be: she’s wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she’s living a secret double life by night. Now, an...

Holidays used to be one of the best parts of Days of Our Lives.
The Bradys and Hortons used to throw parties for Thanksgiving, The Fourth of July, and Christmas, making viewers feel like we were celebrating with our favorite characters.
Nowadays, though, the lower budget often forces Days of Our Lives to cut the holiday cheer short. During the week of 11-25-19, the sudser skipped the turkey and sides, leaving viewers feeling like they missed out.
It's not like Days of Our Lives didn't acknowledge the holiday at all.
Abigail brought Jennifer turkey and mashed potatoes in the hospital, Julie was setting a Thanksgiving table in the club, and Sonny invited newcomer Evan to Thanksgiving dinner.
But we didn't get to see much, if any, of the actual holiday celebration. Instead, we skipped quickly from people arriving to people telling each other they had a good time when the holiday was over.

Killing Eve's cast is already pretty killer as it is, but it's about to get even bigger and better (and killer-er?) for season three. Entertainment Weekly just revealed a whole slew of actors - seven, to be exact - who will be joining the BBC America series for its highly anticipated third installment, which is slated to premiere in the first half of 2020.
Included in the latest additions are Game of Thrones alum Gemma Whelan and Predrag Bjelac, who portrayed Igor Karkaroff in the fourth Harry Potter movie. BBC America also previously confirmed that Dame Harriet Walter (Succession) and Danny Sapani (Misfits) will be appearing in season three of the spy thriller show. We don't have any information about what roles these new cast members will be playing alongside Jodie Comer's Villanelle and Sandra Oh's Eve Polastri, but we're certainly already mulling over some theories.

While the Toronto International Film Festival doesn’t boast a market as robust as Sundance or Cannes, there are always big deals; buyers like to see how movies wow Tiff critics and crowds. Most of all, the massive lineup of 300-plus films means that there’s the possibility of identifying a film that others overlook. “Nobody knew that movie was going to be what it was,” said Focus Features’ distribution chief Lisa Bunnell, remembering a little movie by Kathryn Bigelow, “The Hurt Locker.” “The real surprise is nothing you can predict.”
Most Tiff slates are packed with Oscar contenders. Fox Searchlight has “The Favourite” and “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”; for Sony Pictures Classics it’s foreign-language titles “Capernaum,” “Sunset,” and “Never Look Away.” Annapurna has Barry Jenkins’ Tiff world premiere, “If Beale Street Could Talk,” and Jacques Audiard’s “The Sister Brothers,” while Focus brings “Boy Erased.”

Tate Taylor has replaced Matthew Newton as director of Jessica Chastain’s “Eve,” two weeks after Newton left the project following online backlash due to his history of alleged assault and domestic violence.

Tate Taylor has signed on to direct his “The Help” star Jessica Chastain’s upcoming film “Eve” after original director Matthew Newton dropped out earlier this month, TheWrap has learned.
Newton was originally announced as the director of the action indie, but exited the project after fans resurfaced accusations of domestic abuse made against him.
“Since the announcement of this film, the responses, which are powerful and important, have not fallen on deaf ears. I am profoundly aware that I have a responsibility to lead where I have failed in the past. Newton was originally announced as the director of the action indie, but exited the project after fans resurfaced accusations of domestic abuse made against him.
“Since the announcement of this film, the responses, which are powerful and important, have not fallen on deaf ears. Tate Taylor, who directed Jessica Chastain to an Oscar nomination in 2011's The Help, is reuniting with the actress for Eve, the indie action movie that recently lost its original helmer.
Matthew Newton was attached to direct Eve, but dropped out of the project following a mounting backlash over a history of alleged assault.
After the original announcement of the project, a Care2 petition was circulated asking that Chastain — a vocal proponent of the Time's Up movement — drop Newton from the film. In 2010, the Australian filmmaker's then-fiancee Rachael Taylor accused him of "two unprovoked assaults" and was ...

Good guys may be who we root for most, but baddies have all the fun and are often the most entertaining.
Some baddies are villains, others are good old-fashioned antagonists and foils to our favorite protagonists, and many are just unapologetic bad boys and bad girls who we find irresistible.
If they're unapologetic in being baddies, then why can't we be unapologetic in our adoration for them?
Check out our list of baddies we can't help but adore for one reason or another below! Feel free to hit the comments with some of your favorite baddies too!
1. Tommy - Power Tommy is an impulsive, murderous hothead who always ends up in over his head, but we love him anyway. He also happens to be the best character on Power. His list of offenses is a mile long, including killing his pregnant girlfriend, but does that stop up us from adoring the guy?...

This year’s Emmy nominations are almost upon us, and with the possibilities more scattered than usual, so are our opinions on who deserves to get a nod. So, with voting now underway, Variety’s TV critics got together to hash out their favorite contenders and — more importantly — point to some of the stellar performances that might not have enough support or clout to be recognized, but really ought to be.
Outstanding Drama Series
Daniel D’Addario: We seem to be looking at a field of all of last year’s most exciting new shows—as well as the comeback of “Game of Thrones” after a year off. But the category needs some new blood, and either Netflix’s “Mindhunter” or HBO’s “The Deuce”—or both!—would be a fine addition. Both series use the untidiness of recent American history to tell stories that grow in power as the first season wears on,...

He’s been called Pixar’s “good-luck charm,” and that’s because to date, John Ratzenberger has done voice work for every Pixar film. The 71-year-old actor might forever be known to audiences as Cliff Clavin on “Cheers,” but to audiences who have grown up with these movies, he’s been a consistent voice for over 20 years. Ratzenberger returned to voice the villain The Underminer in the latest Pixar joint, “The Incredibles 2,” opening this Friday. And whether it’s a supporting part or a quick, Easter Egg cameo, Ratzenberger has always been there. Here’s a chronological list of each of those characters:
Hamm – “Toy Story,” “Toy Story 2,” “Toy Story 3”
By far Ratzenberger’s most well-known Pixar character, this porking piggy bank is chock-full of great one-liners and quips across the “Toy Story” trilogy, whether it’s trading jokes with Mr. Potato Head or making snide put downs about Andy’s neighbor Sid.

BBC America’s breakout drama Killing Eve hit another set of Live+3 series highs for its penultimate episode last week — 986,000 total viewers, 455,000 adults 25-54, and 367,000 adults 18-49 — to head into its Season 1 finale on Sunday on a streak of seven consecutive weeks of demo ratings growth (adults 18-49 and 25-54), going back to the series premiere. That is a first for a scripted series on television in more than a decade, per the network.
Across seven weeks, Killing Eve grew a total of +47% in total viewers, +90% in adults 25-54 and +94% in 18-49 from its April 8 premiere in L+3 ratings. Save for a little blip in total viewers, with Episode 5 off by +1% from Episode 4, the show has been growing in every major ratings category each week of its run so far (in cable’s recognized L+3 metric; there have been two week-to-week slips in Live+same day).

Turner is touting its brands this morning at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, including TBS, CNN, TNT, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, truTV and Turner Sports. Among things that may be discussed:
Just days ago TBS announced a new half-hour format for Conan O’Brien’s late-night show, meaning fewer celebrity interviews, more comedy. TruTV came out with its 2018-19 programming slate, highlighted by a series pickup for its Tacoma Fd pilot from two of the Broken Lizard guys.
CNN and PBS announced a new late-night public affairs show hosted by CNN veteran Christiane Amanpour, expanding on the cable newsers’ Amanpour. Speaking of CNN, Sinclair Broadcast Group continued to conscript its local TV stations as soldiers in Donald Trump’s war on CNN, slapping a video attacking the cable news networks at the top of its station’s websites.

The beauty with which Eve described Villanelle, the details she captured from their very brief meeting in the hospital restroom, were stunning.
If you ask the spy again how to describe the woman, the admiration in Eve's voice will likely be gone after Killing Eve Season 1 Episode 3. It's easy to admire from afar. The adoration disappears when someone you loves succumbs to the rage and hostility existing inside a psychopath.
Once the ball was in motion, there was no stopping Bill's fate, but that didn't make the reality of it any easier to watch.
Sharing with Villanelle she has her own task force at her heels only emboldened her. Whatever emotions she has aren't going to be understood anytime soon, and until then, we're going to see an otherwise living, breathing, laughing husk of a woman watching the life bleed out of her kills.
The ways she chooses to kill...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Killing Eve” Episode 3, “Don’t I Know You?”]
“Killing Eve” has been a wild and daring ride so far, but it’s always kept the tone lighthearted and breezy. Sure, the gamine assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer) murders people willy-nilly throughout Europe, but it’s always done with such flair and only to peripheral characters that it felt more like fantasy violence than anything else. Death by hairpin or perfume? Come on. That’s just downright die-lightful!
Sunday’s third episode of the season broke the spell on that fantasy and marks a turning point, for when the series went from fun and addictive to essential viewing. In “Don’t I Know You?” Mi-6 agent Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh) has yet to be killed, but a bit of her heart dies when her former boss-turned-employee Bill (David Haig) becomes Villanelle’s latest victim.
And to be fair, Bill’s fate is...

There was a minor kerfuffle during the Berlinale press conference for Benoît Jacquot’s “Eva” when a journalist asked star Isabelle Huppert how she achieved such a degree of eroticism in the film without getting nude. “You have a very bizarre idea of eroticism,” came the actress’ withering second-degree burn of a reply.
And, to Huppert’s credit, it was a ridiculous question. Ridiculous because French cinema has spent more than a century illustrating that T&A has precious little to do with screen sensuality, ridiculous because Huppert could make a Haneke movie feel erotic, and ridiculous because Jacquot’s overblown melodrama is a film about people who disguise themselves by how they dress.
A limp, sudsy adaptation of James Hadley Chase’s 1945 novel “Eve” (a potboiler that Joseph Losey once spun into a Jeanne Moreau vehicle of the same name), “Eva” begins with an engaging sequence that instantly sets the...

American Idol beat everything in its path again on Tuesday, topping the combined ratings of its broadcast competition in the 8 p.m. hour. Fox's Idol brought in a whopping 26.9 million viewers and 11.5 rating/30 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. That was lofty enough to beat the combined demo averages of CBS' NCIS (13.4 million, 2.9/7), ABC's combo of My Wife & Kids (6.5 million, 2.1/6) and George Lopez (6.4 million, 2.2/5), NBC's Law & Order: Criminal Intent repeat (4.3 million, 1.4/4), WB's Gilmore Girls (5.3 million, 2.2/6) and UPN's All of Us (2.2 million, 0.9/2) and Eve (2.2 million, 0.9/2). At 9 p.m., Fox's numbers came back down to earth with drama House, MD (14.4 million, 5.7/14) losing nearly half of its lead-in audience. Still, the drama did a slightly better job of holding its audience throughout the hour than it did last week. CBS was No. 2 in the hour in viewers with its Dr. Phil: Romance Rescued special (11 million, 3.5/8) while ABC nosed past CBS in adults 18-49 with According to Jim (9.7 million, 3.8/9) and Rodney (8.9 million, 3.5/8).

Veteran film and TV literary agent Paul Haas has been named a partner at Endeavor. Haas joined Endeavor three years ago as head of its television packaging business. His promotion brings the number of partners at the agency to 13. "In Paul's three years with the agency, he has brought an incredible amount of creativity and energy to the television department," the partners said in a statement. "He is a proven leader with the respect of all studios and networks." Haas represents some of primetime's most sought-after writer-producers and showrunners. He recently orchestrated a deal with CBS for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation executive producers Carol Mendolsohn and Ann Donahue that made them the highest-paid female showrunners in television. His other clients include John McNamara (Fastlane, CBS' The Fugitive), Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Jeff Pinkner (Alias), John Herzfeld (2 Days in the Valley), Brad Kern (Charmed) and actress-singer Eve, now starring in the UPN comedy Eve.

The broadcast networks are starting to give their votes of confidence in the fall's new crop of primetime series. UPN has given a full-season order to two of its new comedies, the Will Smith- and Jada Pinkett Smith-produced All of Us as well as Eve, which features hip-hop diva Eve, both from Warner Bros. TV. The sitcoms are the first series to receive so-called back-nine pickups -- which fill out an initial 13-episode order to a full season's worth of 22 episodes -- since the formal start of the 2003-04 TV season Sept. 22. Last month, Fox also gave a full-season pickup to its teen drama The O.C., also from WBTV, which got a jump-start on the fall season by launching Aug. 5. While it has been a ho-hum season so far with no heat-seeking breakout hits along the lines of CBS' CSI: Miami last season, several freshman series look good to follow Eve, All of Us and The O.C. with full-season orders.
