Overall, excellent

For those of us who haven't played the game, the.hack series is difficult to get into because the anime omits a lot of background material. Liminality's strength is the fascinating way it tackles some of these issues. Liminality has multiple facets. Hack anime, a few comics, and a few games, but what makes this anime so brilliant is that it approaches the subject from the perspective of real life rather than gameplay. It does a great job of entertainingly tying up a lot of loose ends.

The characters have been well-developed and given depth. The fact that these people behave differently from how typical people would in real life is not perceived as odd. They make sense and are realistic. The backstories of the characters-who formed the fragment and why-are also expertly done. Overall, excellent.

Worth watching if you are a die-hard fan

Definitely an interesting story, this anime short is only (as far as I'm aware) available on a bonus disc with .hack//infection, and I don't think anyone would rush out to the shops to buy it if it was released as an individual disc.

That having being said, however, I found it a very enjoyable watch. The animation was good, the music was excellent and the plot did help me further understand the goings-on in The World; it also made me listen out whilst playing the game for a certain sound (you have to watch it to understand what I mean).

Intriguing and mysterious, it definitely made me want to go and buy the next game so I could get volume 2, but I think that people with only a mild interest in the story should not bother forking out for it.

Need to think about it...

Warning: Spoilers
This is a good show. Of course, it is only part one, so to fully "get it" you will need the other three parts.

It is about a girl named Mai Minase and her experiences with an online game called "The World". The viewers never actually see the game screen. The show is about the players of "The World" not the game itself.

While there is little to no action in it, .hack//Liminality Vol. 1: In the Case of Mai Minase is still a great show. The music is amazing. I personally like the choir-type background music. Also, the voice acting is very well done. The voices are true to life and suit the characters. That couples with the great dialogue. The art is great. The characters weren't drawn ideally, but realistically. Well, as realistic as one can get with anime! A personal favorite with the art is that they made Mai's eyes violet. I loved that...

The only thing I dislike about the show is that the four parts split up on four different disks. It would be much better if all of them were together.
