Before entering the DC franchise as Black Adam, Dwayne Johnson had many successful action films under his belt. The former WWE champion-turned-actor featured in films like San Andreas and Rampage apart from being a pivotal presence in The Fast and the Furious franchise. However, apart from this popular film series, The Rock’s other films have surprisingly not expanded into sequels.

Johnson’s producing partner Hiram Garcia attempted to explain the reasons behind this back in 2022. It appeared from Garcia’s revelations that The Scorpion King star’s commitment to DC and his character Black Adam could have been the deciding factor behind a film like Rampage not getting the greenlight for a sequel. As fate would have it, Johnson’s long-term desires for DC went up in smoke.

The MonsterVerse franchise is an underrated contender in the cinematic universe wars, with a clear watching order that avoids confusion or an overwhelming number of entries. Part of the success of the franchise is that the continuity and canon are not overly complicated — well, it is a franchise about giant monsters punching each other in the face, after all.
After doing what all big cinematic universes do and expanding to TV — albeit with a really good show in this case, the MonsterVerse is back on the big screen with "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." The movie is set to not only bring the King of the Monsters and the Eighth Wonder of the World together once again but also bring a bit of a buddy-cop vibe to the MonsterVerse.
Still, as relatively straight-forward as the franchise is, there are still things you should remember before watching "Godzilla x Kong,...

Malaga-based writer-producer Ezekiel Montes is teaming with director Sergio Siruela on “Aullar,” a thriller centering on a father-daughter relationship.
Elena Martínez, who worked with Montes on the appreciable 2021 crime thriller “A Dead Man Cannot Live” and Rafa Russo’s 2023 drama “Devoción,” stars in the film as a strong and independent woman struggling to make ends meet and support her son. One day her estranged father shows up in need of help – his house has become occupied by drug addicts.
Although they haven’t seen each other in years due to his alcoholism, which was exacerbated by the death of her mother and ultimately destroyed their relationship, she agrees to help him recover his home. In the process, however, wounds of the past gradually reopen.

He lost a role in one major franchise, but gained another. In a recent interview, Josh Hutcherson claims he was almost cast as Kevin McCallister in one of the Home Alone movies.
“I was probably 11, I think, when I auditioned for it,” the 31-year-old actor recalled in an interview at BuzzFeed HQ. “It got down to me and the other guy. That was the first time that I tasted rejection, so that was really hard.”
It would have been a role in one of the later films in the series, following the first two films headlined by Macaulay Culkin. Alex D. Linz starred in 1997’s Home Alone 3, and three other movies followed in the series with different casts.
Hutcherson’s child actor career began with parts on ER and in the TV movie House Blend. Then he was in the 2007 fantasy film Bridge to Terabithia, followd by Journey to the Center of the Earth...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters."
While "Monarch" may have started off a bit slow by leaning hard on its mystery-box storytelling in the early going (as /Film's Chris Evangelista pointed out in his review here), the smoke is finally starting to clear and the show's overall goal is rounding into shape — along with a heavy dose of even more Monster-Verse connections. Last week's episode "Will the Real May Please Stand Up?" featured a major Easter egg referencing the future events of "Godzilla vs Kong," but ended on a cliffhanger that didn't clarify exactly what the present-day Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) is up to with his renegade force of former Monarch operatives. Those questions have now been answered emphatically as of episode 8 and, in the process, we've been given a roadmap to one of the wildest twists incorporated in the movies.

Josh Hutcherson may have gotten his big break when he was cast as Peeta Mellark in the Hunger Games franchise, but he'd actually been a staple in Hollywood since he was very young. His most recent starring role is in the horror film "Five Nights at Freddy's," based on the video game of the same name, but he's been in tons of other movies as well, dating all the way back to his days as a child actor.
Way before he was running from demonic animatronic characters in "Five Nights at Freddy's," Hutcherson was just a kid working his way up. He had minor roles in 2004's "The Polar Express" and 2005's "Kicking and Screaming," and one of his first major starring roles was in the 2007 film "Bridge to Terabithia," which he starred in when he was 13 years old. If you were a kid or teen in the 2000s, it's likely that you watched at least one movie featuring Josh Hutcherson, and it's also likely that you had a favorite movie with him in it. Hutcherson began acting in the early 2000s and had minor roles in a variety of TV shows before making his film debut in 2003's "American Splendor." From there, Hutcherson was launched into stardom and starred in a number of popular films throughout the decade, including "Kicking & Screaming," "Zathura: A Space Adventure," and "Journey to the Center of the Earth." By the 2010s, Hutcherson took on more mature roles and arguably landed his most popular role as Peeta Mellark in "The Hunger Games," which he would reprise for the remaining three movies in the beloved film series.

Spoilers for "The Fall of the House of Usher" follow.
As horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan has gone from production to production, he's assembled a wholesale acting troupe along the way. Kate Siegel (his wife), Henry Thomas, Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Carl Lumbly, Michael Trucco, Rahul Kohli, Annabeth Gish — they're all in Flanagan's latest, "The Fall of the House of Usher," and if you look back through his filmography, you'll recognize their faces somewhere.
That said, Flanagan always includes a few actors who are new to him, and "House of Usher" is no different. One of those new faces is one that's otherwise eminently familiar: Mark Hamill. Like the rest of the main cast, Hamill's part is named after an Edgar Allan Poe character. In his case, the eponymous protagonist of "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket."

When Josh Hutcherson was cast in "Five Nights at Freddy's," it just made sense. Director and co-writer Emma Tammi's film adaptation of the lore-heavy hit horror video game franchise has the actor playing Mike Schmidt, an Average Joe who takes a job as the night security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, unaware of that tiny issue where the entertainment center's animatronic mascots come to life and begin massacring people after midnight. Mike himself is the type of archetypical hero Hutcherson is best known for portraying; a humble everyman who must rise to the occasion in the face of extraordinary circumstances.
In a way, Hutcherson's unlikely transformation into one of this century's major genre movie and TV actors began with his first feature film, "American Splendor." One of the best comic book adaptations ever made, the film carries over the meta-narrative and autobiographical elements of Harvey Pekar's source material,...

The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

Exclusive: Jet-set, celebrity artist Domingo Zapata will direct an adaptation of his 2017 semi-autobiographical novel The Beautiful Dream of Life.
Veteran producers Cary Granat and Ed Jones have signed on to produce the feature adaptation.
In an innovative move, the production will feature 18 pieces of original artwork by Zapata that will be sold as Fine Art pieces and NFTs.
Last year, Zapata’s work Mona Lisa Bull Fighter sold for a personal £1 million record at a charity auction in St. Barts, in which Leonardo DiCaprio was reportedly outbid.
Spanish-born, New York-based painter Zapata is known for his lavish lifestyle, film star girlfriends and celebrity collectors, such as DiCaprio, Johnny Depp and George Soros.
He has travelled to Cannes for the final days of the film festival to help launch the project and also attend the world premiere of Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or contender The Old Oak on Friday evening.

This is all true, as far as I know. Zoe Thorogood says this book is the story of six months in her life, as filtered through her own head. But everything everyone ever sees or knows is filtered through their heads, so that’s reality as best we know it, always.
It’s Lonely at the Centre of the Earth is the name – I guess you’d call it a graphic novel, since it’s in comics format. Or maybe a comics memoir, or graphic non-fiction.
I suspect it’s vastly more carefully constructed and conceived than it seems to be: the best works of art always have a lot of prep-work and invisible details. Centre of the Earth says it’s the comics pages that Thorogood made during this stretch of time, to be a Gn memoir, to chronicle an expected trip from her native England to the US for the first time.

Movie director and Oscar-winner James Cameron managed to break his own box-office records when he delivered Avatar to the big screen.
But before it hit theaters, Cameron used Brendan Fraser’s popular hit as a sort of guinea pig for Avatar.
Brendan Fraser originally thought the script for ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ was ‘daft’ Brendan Fraser | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Fraser once had a starring role in the sci-fi feature Journey to the Center of the Earth. The movie was based on a short story by French novelist Jules Verne. In the adaptation, Fraser played a professor who attempts to escape a cavern he finds himself trapped inside of. On his way out, Fraser’s professor encounters several creatures and obstacles that threaten his life.
Fraser admitted that when he first received the script, it was a concept he didn’t think much of.

April showers might bring May flowers but on Disney+, April brings us all a heaping dose of Jeremy Renner. That’s right, friends, Disney+’s list of new releases for April 2023 includes the event we’ve all been waiting for: Rennervations.
A balm for those missing the Jeremy Renner app, Rennervations will make use of Marvel star Jeremy Renner’s last name and interest in renovation. Will the show be good? Who knows! But it sounds goofily fun enough and was a great excuse to use that photo of Hawkeye (Renner) and Captain America (Anthony Mackie) enjoying each other’s company.
Elsewhere on Disney+ this month is a whole lot of Star Wars. The season 3 finale of The Mandalorian will premiere on April 19. That will be immediately followed by a fresh Star Wars series, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures. Set during The High Republic era, this animated show will follow...

Brendan Fraser is finally an Oscar winning actor, deservedly so for his performance in The Whale. The outpouring of love and recognition for Fraser in the last year has been heartwarming because he’s always been great, since his powerhouse debuts in 1992’s Encino Man and School Ties. His specialty, it would turn out, would be in acting opposite CGI visual effects.

From the late ‘90s to early ‘00s, Fraser appeared in several movies with co-stars who would be added in later with computers. It was already becoming a common practice after Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park, and hasn’t stopped with the Marvel movies. Nobody ever did it better than Fraser though, and these three roles are the proof.
The ‘Mummy’ movies shows CGI couldn’t phase Brendan Fraser

It seems like it’s always Star Wars season at Disney+, where “The Bad Batch” Season 2 concludes in March with “The Mandalorian” carrying viewers into April and “Young Jedi Adventures (shorts)” premiering later in the month on the animation slate.
But closer to home and further from that galaxy far, far away, Disney+ continues to churn out exciting original content for kids and teens, just like the TV channel and film studio that raised previous generations. April marks the premiere of “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” a Mexican adaptation of the Jules Verne novel. In a quest to learn more about his family, Diego (Sebastián García) joins with his friends and siblings and ends up uncovering another dimension — as well as formidable enemies who want to subdue the family and its secrets at any cost.

The highlight of Brendan Fraser’s Oscars night was winning the Academy Award for best actor thanks to his acclaimed performance in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” but perhaps in second place was a long overdue reunion with megastar Dwayne Johnson. The two actors starred together nearly 22 years ago in “The Mummy Returns,” the sequel to Fraser’s 1999 blockbuster “The Mummy” that marked Johnson’s film acting debut in Hollywood.
“Very cool full circle moment here with my long time buddy Brendan Fraser and his sons,” Johnson wrote on Instagram along with a video of the two actors reuniting backstage at the 2023 Oscars. “My very first film of my Hollywood career was ‘The Mummy Returns,’ which Brendan was the star. Lots of critics and cynics betting against me at that time, but Brendan welcomed me with open arms and was very supportive. I never forget kind people.”

It’s no secret that visual effects artists are frequently overworked and poorly compensated, which seems unfair when their work drives so many of these billion-dollar blockbusters. If you need another reason to love Brendan Fraser, you’ve come to the right place. Brendan Fraser starred in Journey to the Center of the Earth 15 years ago, but when he found out the VFX artists behind the movie weren’t being paid, he went to bat for them.
Dave Rand was the VFX lead on Journey to the Center of the Earth and took to Twitter to explain how the “righteous” Brendan Fraser helped them out.

Brendan Fraser revealed that he “nearly” died while filming one particular scene in The Mummy.
In the first installment of the franchise, there’s a hanging sequence, and the rope around his neck tightened too much during the shot.
“I was standing on my toes like this, with the rope [around my neck], and you only got so far to go,” Fraser said on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “And [director] Stephen [Sommers] ran over, and he said, ‘Hey, it doesn’t really look like you’re, you know, choking — can you sell it?’ And I was like, ‘All right, fine.’ So I thought, ‘One more take, man.'”
When the director went in for the last take, Fraser stood on his toes, and the crew member holding the rope above him pulled it a little higher.
“I was stuck on my toes — I had nowhere to go but down,” The Whale actor told the host.

The Whale is a movie directed by Darren Aronofsky starring Brendan Fraser whom we guess will win the Oscar… and an excellent Sadie Sink,
This movie is based on a play by Samuel D. Hunter.
As it can be with you, we didn´t feel like watching it at all and it surprised us in many ways.
It is as expected: extremely melodramatic and yes, it is about a man with hyper obesity.

A university professor who can barely get out of his chair. He teaches online and his obesity points to the evident: if he does not do something about it, he will die within a few days.

Aníta Briem creates and stars in “As Long as We Live,” an upcoming miniseries about a new mother – and once promising musician – suffocating in her marriage. But things change when a young man, her new nanny, starts giving the couple little “assignments” to do.

The culmination of the first wave of MonsterVerse films, "Godzilla vs. Kong" delivered on the title's premise and then some. In addition to having Godzilla slap Kong around (and vice-versa), the film expanded the kaiju-filled world by introducing the Hollow Earth. Indeed, the center of our planet was revealed to be a lush environment that literally flipped the world on its head, laying out an expansive origin story for Kong and his fiercest competitor along the way. Just don't compare it to Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth."
A sequel is well on its way, but "Godzilla vs. Kong" already did the heavy lifting when it comes to laying the foundation of its monster-ridden universe. The Hollow Earth once housed the large creatures that now terrorize the surface land, including Kong's deceased relatives. The giant ape's return to his homeland is a turning point in the story,...

Released by David Bowie’s estate in 2022, Divine Symmetry, subtitled “An Alternative Journey Through Hunky Dory,” is a 4-disc collection chronicling the year’s work leading to David Bowie’s fourth studio album. Demos, previously unreleased tracks, and live recordings capture the sound of a vision in a state of flux.
As its lead single, “Changes,” makes clear, Hunky Dory, released on Dec. 17, 1971, presented a notable metamorphosis for the artist who would go on to define transformation. This worked against Bowie as his label, RCA Records, worried he would reframe his image again, and did not promote the single. Hunky Dory didn’t chart until after the release of Bowie’s 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust.
Bowie had only landed one hit during his tenure at Mercury Records, and it would have marked him as a novelty singer. “Space Oddity” charted five days before the Apollo 11 launch in 1969. His third album,...

There’s a lot riding on Avatar: The Way of Water. It may sound ridiculous to suggest that a sequel to the highest-grossing film ever made could possibly be a gamble – but it is. Thirteen years have passed since Avatar first hit screens. The cinematic landscape has been stripped bare in the interim by declining audiences, bullish competition from streaming services, and ever-dwindling investment in original ideas. James Cameron has kept the budget for The Way of Water under wraps, though has conceded that it was “very f***ing expensive”: according to the veteran filmmaker, The Way of Water needs to become the “third or fourth” highest-grossing film ever made just to break even. Beneath this game of precarious balance sheets and capitalist folly, however, there could be something else at stake: the future of 3D.
It’s almost impossible to talk about 3D films without mentioning Avatar; it...

Disney Animation’s Strange World, which took inspiration from adventures such as King Kong and Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, is about discovery and family, and the characters learning that their world is just as much a living thing as they are.
The story centers on three generations of a family: Searcher Clade (Jake Gyllenhaal), a farmer who as a teen discovered a plant-based power source that changed the world; Searcher’s dad, Jaeger (Dennis Quaid), a legendary explorer; and Searcher’s son Ethan (Jaboukie Young-White), a 16-year-old who helps on the farm but is unsure about following in his father’s footsteps. Their home, in Avalonia, is in trouble — the power source is fading — setting in motion a journey beneath the surface into a fantastical, colorful world to find the root of the problem. We are one again in the era of Brendan Fraser, everyone, and the internet could not be more happy to welcome one of the most cherished actors of the 1990s and 2000s back into the spotlight.
Fraser starred in his first on-screen role in "Dogfight" in 1991, but gained traction through roles in bigger films throughout the 1990s, like Chester Darby in "Airheads" alongside Adam Sandler and Steve Buscemi and George in "George of the Jungle" alongside Leslie Mann. The actor's breakout role, arguably, came in 1999 when he portrayed archeologist Rick O' Connell in "The Mummy," which only helped to propel him into blockbuster films, like "The Mummy Returns," "Looney Tunes: Back in Action," and "Journey to the Center of the Earth."
By the 2010s, however, Fraser was constantly patching up injuries sustained on set, which eventually took a toll on his ability to function as a person, let alone an actor.

As December approaches, Netflix is giving the well-reviewed Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio a high-profile debut.
Netflix Animation — despite its challenging year on the business side — has a strong and varied slate of animated feature contenders, the most notable being del Toro’s moving stop-motion retelling of Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio, which is having a limited theatrical rollout ahead of its Dec. 9 streaming debut.
Netflix burst onto the animation scene in 2019, releasing its first original animated feature, the Christmas movie Klaus, directed by Sergio Pablos, as well as French film I Lost My Body, from Jérémy Clapin. Both movies earned Oscar nominations in 2020, and Netflix has had at least one category nomination each year since. It did win an animated short Oscar in 2021, for If Anything Happens I Love You, but the streaming service is still vying for its first animated feature category win.

“Strange World” director Don Hall was thinking about his children and the world they would inherit when he got the idea for Disney’s latest animated feature. Hall, whose credits include “Raya and the Last Dragon,” says he wanted to tell a story about the environment. “This idea of the world existing on a back of a living thing was cool,” Hall says.
Hall and the team of animators looked into the body, the nervous system and even a body’s digestive system through a microscopic lens. He says, “We started seeing landscapes in actual microscopic imagery and I got really excited.” Hall says he let production designer Mehrdad Isvandi run wild with ideas over what the world could look like.
Screenwriter Qui Nguyen adds that while Hall had mapped out much of the story, it was pitched as “Indiana Jones meets National Lampoon’s Vacation.” But this was also about...
