Telluride Film Festival programmers Tom Luddy and Julie Huntsinger pride themselves on curating the cream of the Hollywood crop, which has included Best Picture Oscar-winners “The King’s Speech,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Argo,” and “12 Years a Slave.”
However, even a Telluride hit needs amplification from noisy Toronto as they head into awards season.
Launched at Venice and Telluride, Lionsgate’s “La La Land” has propelled Emma Stone and, possibly, costar Ryan Gosling into awards contention. How the audacious musical fares with critics and audiences will impact how far it goes with the Academy, who will give “Whiplash” nominee Damien Chazelle points for ambition and a relatable showbiz story. This film boasts passionate supporters, while many others don’t get the movie at all. The larger media presence in Toronto and New York will continue to ripple out and build must-see for the movie. So far I am discerning a slight generational divide,...

It's September, and the fall movie season is upon us! That means we're going to set aside all of those summer frivolities and explosions, turning an eye towards more serious fare instead.
Speaking of serious, the hunt for Oscar starts this week at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the buzz generated by this year's official selections will tell us plenty about where the race is headed. Let's break down the most anticipated films our northern neighbors have to offer.
1. '12 Years a Slave'
Noteworthy Cast: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Paul Giamatti, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt, Quvenzhane Wallis, and directed by the extremely buzzy Steve McQueen ("Shame").
Tiff Synopsis: The incredible true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841.
Going for Oscars?: You have to love its chances for a Best Picture nomination, and Chiwetel Ejiofor...

Monthly Movie Preview – December 2012
The year of 2012, a span of months that included both Good Deeds and Looper, is nearly complete. After an autumn of award season contenders (Lincoln) and strict blockbusters (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2), we now enter the final month that features strong mixes of the two, with movies like Django Unchained or This Is 40 playing to many expectations. The same can be said for a movie like The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which carries the excitement of director Peter Jackson’s return to the Lord of the Rings franchise for fan hype as well as award assumptions. And as many film critics groups begin to cast their ballots in the coming weeks, filmgoers will have an even bigger ideas of which end of the year events will be checking out overall more than others.

Just like its slightly more competent sibling “Award Season,” the fatter movie season known as “Summer Movie Season” returns to roost every year to perpetuate the love for all of the wacky stories it can spin. Some of the stories are good, and some are laughably not so much. Usually, these stories are based off other stories, and sometimes these stories are based of other stories which started with one story. Most unsurprisingly, movies like Men in Black 3 pop up, even though no one asked for it in the first place.
Summer 2K12 is upon us, people of the internet, and there is much to be excited for. With a month that kicks off with The Avengers, and then features titles like Battleship, The Dictator, and yes, Men in Black 3, May is certainly going to be summer movie-tastic, and then some. And then, some more.

There are a lot of great movies coming out this year, and every one of them wants you to believe it's the biggest film event of the decade. "The Dark Knight Rises"! "The Hunger Games"! The Avengers"!
But as fantastic as those films look, there's one movie coming out this year that is set to rule them all: "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." So before the onslaught of contenders begins, we thought we'd take a look at everything we know so far about this year's champ.

IMAX cameras. Bat pods. Anne Hathaway in a tight leather outfit. Where does Christopher Nolan get those wonderful toys?
Nolan was behind Warner Bros.' hugely successful relaunch of the DC Comics icon, "Batman Begins," which proved a revelation after the cinematic devastation of "Batman & Robin." After the triumph of 2008's super-sequel "The Dark Knight" -- which garnered buckets of praise, a posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger, and north of a billion Bat Bucks -- a third and final chapter was inevitable. With all the key players back, it's about damn time "The Dark Knight Rises."
Release Date: July 20, 2012

The Buzz: The only drawback to having to choose a movie of the week becomes apparent on weeks such as this one, wherein I have absolutely zero interest in any of the new releases. First of all, I hated what I saw of the first Happy Feet, and the trailer for Happy Feet Two advertises a film which looks to be about as bearable as swallowing a glass full of shards of glass. Bad Teacher
The Stars: Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Justin Timberlake
The Plot: A comedy centered around a foul-mouthed, junior high teacher (Diaz) who, after being dumped by her sugar daddy, begins to woo a colleague — a move that pits her against a well-loved teacher.
The Buzz: Nope, no buzz. No competition here. Bad Teacher could (or should) be Diaz’ swan song as a sex symbol, she’s just not looking the part these days. Director Jake Kasdan does have some reputable directorial chops, most notably five episodes of Freaks and Geeks, but this looks to be just another lukewarm comedy. A weak cast and a weak premise will probably doom this film at the box office.

If I happen to have any regular readers out there, they’re certain to know that I’m not going anywhere near Bridesmaids, not even with a blindfold, and so Priest suddenly shines with promise — relatively speaking of course.

The Buzz: Liam Neeson rocks. So happy to see his career is still in full swing. There have been a couple missable films on his most recent filmography (Clash of the Titans, The A-Team), but those were smaller roles, and he’s had his fair share of ‘must sees’ over the past few years (Taken, Five Minutes of Heaven, Chloe). Well, congratulations readers. You made it through the onslaught of terrible movie after terrible movie that makes up most of the month of January. Moving right along, Hollywood’s ready to offer something a little different. For the most part, I think Hollywood’s just trying to get people to leave the house and get into the theaters. Shocking strategy, right? But after last year’s performances at the box office, it’s no surprise that Hollywood seems to be making a conscious effort to get people into the megaplexes. Then again, that’s really the only way I can check out the disproportionate number of action flicks that February has to offer alongside the romantic tripe. Take a look for yourself.

Monthly Movie Preview – December 2010
December is the time of year when winter is settling in and you’ve just gotten away from family after Thanksgiving, but there’s still that cruel reminder that Christmas is just around the corner and Hanukkah comes even earlier this year. In other words, December is the ideal month for escapism. What better way to spend time with family than in a dark, crowded and mostly silent movie theater?
The real question is, what does December have to offer that’s worth braving the cold? Usually December is a pretty even split between the family friendly favorites that capitalize on the time off from school and the awards favorites that try to cash in on the buzz of the fast approaching awards season. Let’s see what else (if anything) December has to offer this time around.

December is the time of year when winter is settling in and you’ve just gotten away from family after Thanksgiving, but there’s still that cruel reminder that Christmas is just around the corner and Hanukkah comes even earlier this year. Burlesque – Christina Aguilera, Cher
Faster – Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton, Maggie Grace
Love and Other Drugs – Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway
Tangled – Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Ron Perlman
Movie of the Week
Faster
The Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton, Maggie Grace
The Plot: An ex-con (Johnson) sets out to avenge his brother’s death.
The Buzz: Dwayne Johnson is back in straight-up action mode — after The Tooth Fairy and The Race to Witch Mountain — I was wondering if he’d ever return. Yes, Faster is certainly an action film, but it appears to be more than that; it appears to be a wildly rampaging, no-holds-barred, glorious tale of bullet-sweet vengeance. Well, that’s my gut-shot feeling anyway. Billy Bob Thornton is poised to play the perfect foil as the “slow justice” cop that stands in Johnson’s vengeful way. There are a couple solid female actresses here as well,...

Monthly Movie Preview – November 2010
Fresh off the sugar high from an eventful Halloween, in comes November. It’s always hard to tell what November will bring. There are always those sure things, like an animated family-friendly movie around the holidays, or a comedy here or there, but it’s something else as well.
November, much like the holiday in it, is about celebrating our differences and coming together… at the movies. Before you laugh it off, just think about it. Within the first week alone, we have a comedy, a drama, and a family friendly movie for the little ones. Hell, if that’s not diversity (or capitalism, take your pick) at its finest than I don’t know what is. Check out what other movies November has in store for audiences.

The Plot: As a deadly battle rages over Jigsaw’s brutal legacy, a group of Jigsaw survivors gathers to seek the support of self-help guru and fellow survivor Bobby Dagen (Flanery), a man whose own dark secrets unleash a new wave of terror.

Monthly Movie Preview – September 2010
The summer movie season is now over. But don’t start saving all of your movie-going money for the winter award season just yet. There are plenty of films coming out this month that have some specialness to them, and are therefore more likely to be worthy of your movie-going attention.
On the mainstream circuit, we’ve got scheduled a full-length feature version of the Grindhouse trailer for Machete, a fourth Resident Evil film, a teen comedy starring breakout Emma Stone, a horror movie “from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan,” and more! As for the limited releases, September is giving us two directorial debuts – Casey Affleck’s I’m Still Here and Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Jack Goes Boating, along with other notable releases like Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go. Lest we not forget, that-movie-with-Van-Wilder-in-a-box, Buried, is also finally coming out at the end of the month.

Monthly Movie Preview – June 2010
It’s difficult to say where the blockbuster season begins. On one hand, there were some highly anticipated releases for the month of May, such as Iron Man 2 but with June, the kids are out of school and summers in full swing. For a movie theater, this can be a blessing and a curse. Sure, there’s a lot more free time for the kids, but how do you compete with 78 degrees and sunny? The answer? Any way that you can.
June is proof of that, kicking off the summer season with some of the best that this year has to offer. For fans of the more explicit comedy to something a little more family friendly, June seems to have it all. Sure, June has to fight for the attention of audiences, but if this month’s line-up Is any indication, movie studios are ready to go to war.

Monthly Movie Preview – April 2010
April is a delicate time of year for the movie industry. The skies are returning to their beautiful shades of blue, the grass is getting green again. Everyone’s thoughts are turning to the summer so studios have to start bringing out their A game to keep audiences interested. Yet they don’t want to peak too soon before they head into blockbuster season. Therefore, April is the perfect time for the action movie, both the more understated ones, such as this month’s The Losers (although understated action movie sounds like an oxymoron) as well as some of the bigger budget ones that may not have the special effects or star power to graduate to the big leagues of the summer blockbuster.

Apple just released the first official trailer for the suspense thriller After.Life starring Liam Neeson, Justin Long and Christina Ricci. The film seems pretty unique and different from most thrillers about the afterlife, not giving to much away from the coolness of the trailer, it almost seems as if Neeson is very serial killer like but that Ricci seems to be caught in and out of flux between death and life. Ricci plays the lead role of Anna whereas Justin Long plays her grief stricken boyfriend Paul. Neeson plays the funeral home director Elliot Deacon.
The film is written and directed by Polish filmmaker and Nyu Film School graduate Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo. Anchor Bay Films will be bringing After.Life to very limited theaters starting on April 9.

In my Box-Office preview last Friday I picked Edge of Darkness to “edge” its way past Avatar. However, I also predicted that Cameron’s film would still have a big enough domestic take to launch it into the number one all-time spot. Unfortunately I was wrong on both accounts. Admitting, I guess, is my first step to recovery.
Avatar continued rolling over the competition in its seventh week as the sci-fi juggernaut raked in another $30 million in an otherwise lackluster end to January’s box office. I wonder if the weather had some affect on moviegoers, or if the competition just wasn’t that good.
New releases Edge of Darkness and When In Rome ranged from dismal to fair this past weekend. Edge claimed an estimated $17.1 million on approximately 3,600 screens at 3,066 which was within the average range for its genre. According to experts at Box Office Mojo, it performed about the same as Righteous Kill,...

A few months ago a rumor spurred out that there could be a possible new Star Wars trilogy in 3D and that its happening would rely on the success and response from audiences over James Cameron’s Avatar. That rumored wasted no time in getting debunked and then internet absurdity ensued. Now it seems that basis may not have been entirely off or if they were not there with Lucas at first they are now.
Access Hollywood recently spoke with George Lucas and he revealed the technological breakthroughs in Avatar could lead to 3-D versions of his Star Wars films.
“We’ve been looking for years and years and years of trying to take Star Wars and put it in 3-D,” George explained to Access. “But, [the] technology hasn’t been there. We’ve been struggling with it, but I think this will be a new impetus to make that happen.

This is going to be a great month. No matter whether these big and small movies fall flat on their faces or not there’s going to be plenty to choose from – especially for those who want to keep up with important films.
First up is Avatar, one of the biggest gambles of this decade. Will the same kind of crowd that saw The Dark Knight or Transformers multiple times venture to movie theatres to see a 150-minute-long 3-D film that features tall blue creatures? It’s up in the air.
Which reminds me of a few more titles that should be worth checking out, one of them being Jason Reitman’s new film with George Clooney. The drama-comedy about a man who fires people for a living has been getting great buzz from its successful festival runs, with Oscar talk flying around as smoothly as paper airplanes.

There are many theories, ideas or should I say 'schools of thought' on how the world would end. At the height of the Cold War, nuclear annihilation ranks at the very top. While others argue it will not be man who will destroy the world (directly) but - an epidemic of global proportions (most probably from a potent strain of virus - think: I am Legend) or severe climactic change (another ice age perhaps? That would be Day After Tommorow right?) or mechanical uprising (The Terminator, anyone?) or even attack from the outside - conquering aliens (Mars Attacks!) or perhaps an asteroid. And let's not forget zombies!

It’s the holidays. We know this because the movies tell us so. This year they waited exactly one week after Halloween to start the Christmas fare with Jim Carrey’s A Christmas Carol. But even though the month starts with Christmas, the movie month plays out just like Thanksgiving.
At first, we’re given an array of wonderful treats that’s we’ll happily gobble up like George Clooney in The Men Who Stare at Goats or George Clooney in the stop-motion Wes Anderson movie Fantastic Mr. Fox. Plus, teenage girls and a few others, will have their vampire appetites filled with The Twilight Saga: New Moon. But then, just like Thanksgiving, you gorge a little too much. And even though you’re full, you look around for something more to eat … and that’s when Old Dogs seems to be your only option.

Here comes the fall. And I’m not talking about the seasons. Normally fall is when you notice the blockbusters, and the quality of those blockbusters, drop a touch.
But then again, what did August do for you? I loved Inglorious Basterds … and there was some decent escapes for dates like Julie & Julia and The Time Traveler’s Wife. It seems I’m in the minority thinking District 9 is only “pretty good.”
So what can we expect from September? Mike Judge returns to live-action features with Extract. Our blockbuster leftovers give us Whiteout and Surrogates. Michael Moore will try for another documentary full of impact with Capitalism: a Love Story. And Fame will try to prove that it truly can live forever. I wonder if they’ll also learn how to fly (high). I’m pinning my hopes on The Informant! and that kooky, crazy comedian Matt Damon.

This week on a very special episode of Reject Radio, we mistake guest host Landon Palmer for Bill O'Reilly, get pissed at movie marketing, and Neil has one more margarita than is advisable. This becomes apparent toward the end of the show when he takes a nap. Luckily, he talks in his sleep. Unluckily, he still just rambles on about movies. Un-unluckily, we manage to stay off topic for most of the show, but we do end up talking about Funny People, The Collector, and why Steven Spielberg doesn't understand how to use email. August is going to be a fairly original month, come to think of it. While the top dogs of the next 30-days all crib from some other source, (District 9 excluded), there’s a fair amount of fresh writing sneaking into multiplexes to round off the summer. For example, you’ve got Paper Heart, Shorts (another kid’s movie from Robert Rodriguez, who has both Planet Terror and Spy Kids on his resume), Ponyo, the animated film from the beloved Hayao Miyazaki, Cold Souls, and even the bubbly looking Post Grad.
But fear not, for those who still want a few more servings of that summer popcorn movie glory will have plenty to choose from. The G.I Joe movie is finally coming out this Friday, a sequel to Rob Zombie’s Halloween is due at the end of the month, and beach reading is getting a trip to the movies...
