On the heels of Oscar night, I applaud the broad Asian representation among the winners and am particularly in awe of Michelle Yeoh, who made history as the first Asian woman to win the Academy Award for best actress. While this is welcome progress, we are all aware that many extraordinary filmmakers, cinematographers and craftspeople from underrepresented backgrounds remain undiscovered because they don’t have the right opportunity to break into the industry.
The job market is daunting for filmmakers, media producers, editors and other early career talent, while the arts and media sectors lack a broad enough infrastructure to support accessible pathways for in-demand jobs. Job seekers need an impressive reel of visual stories just to get their foot in the door, and in a Catch-22 scenario, one can’t build that without professional experience.
This point was crystalized for me recently by Jenni Loo, a paid apprentice in Los Angeles,...

Night Court is back on NBC, but the only reason the new-boot could happen was because people loved the original series. Night Court ran for nine seasons from 1984 – 1992, so if you haven’t seen the original yet, it is streaming on Freevee. If you have exhausted all nine seasons plus the new one, don’t worry. Showbiz Cheat Sheet is here to recommend six other shows you might also like if you liked Night Court.

The team at ArtSpear Entertainment has created a parody of Logan in which Wolverine has an over-the-top Aussie accent and is a much bigger drunk than he is in the actual film. Black Mirror is back, with six new episodes coming to its new home, Netflix, tomorrow, October 21.
Creator Charlie Brooker once described the series like this, "If technology is a drug – and it does feel like a drug – then what, precisely, are the side effects? This area – between delight and discomfort – is where Black Mirror...is set."
Black Mirror, of course, refers to every reflective surface that stares back at us, smartphones, computers, televisions. Cold and without feeling. But there is a bit more optimism creeping into the series in its third season, and it appears in the best episodes.
Moving to Netflix from Channel 4 in the UK, this social commentary series about the effects of technology on our lives doubles up the number of episodes from the previous two seasons. The biggest surprise is the addition of hope. It's not six episodes of bleak messages and buyer beware, so you're in for a treat.

I was attending The Pratt Institute and needed all the bank I could get. Pratt’s one of the world’s great art schools and cheap it was not. I had to come up with most of the tuition because no one talked to me about how financial aid went away if grades fall below a C.
I was a poor black kid from the projects talks like that rarely happen in inner cities. Those lucky enough to raise above our assigned station in life have to fend for ourselves. Our talks revolve around staying away from drugs, gangs, and cops.
American families middle class or above think nothing of seemingly little things like dad or mom talking to them at dinner about their college life.

I think there’s a reason why American Horror Story has always been really hit-or-miss with me in the past: It’s very difficult to make a compelling and scary story over the course of an entire season of television. Long form storytelling and horror aren’t really an easy pairing. Yes, you can look at some books that Stephen King books as evidence that it can work, as well as previous seasons of American Horror Story, but it’s a very tough thing to do.
The reason? Half of the scares come from mystery. When you’re spending an entire season trying to squeeze scares out of the audience, you’re essentially forced to reveal a good number of secrets over time. In a way, information is the mortal enemy of horror. The more you know about something, the less scary that something is.

[CUSTOM_PLAYER_BRIGHTCOVE "4783555997001"] Kanye West is at the center of another Twitter feud, this time with Canadian DJ Deadmau5. The conflict started when Deadmau5 (real name Joel Zimmerman) accused West of not being able to afford Serum, a synthesizer software, when some Twitter users spotted a Pirate Bay tab open in one of the rapper's tweets. For those who don't know, Pirate Bay is a website used to share and download torrents that typically provide access to illegal versions of copyrighted content. "What the f--- @kanyewest … Can't afford serum? D---," Deadmau5 tweeted, adding in a separate tweet, "Lets start a Kickstarter to help...

So, during the filming of Fargo‘s second season, it came out one night that Cristin Milioti had never even heard of Cheers, much less seen an episode of it. If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.
First up, "Dawson Creek" star, Katie Holmes (sorry, this is forever how we will identify her), who stopped by "The Tonight Show" to play "Say Anything" with Jimmy Fallon. Basically, they took turns saying words at each other and she ended up covered in tape. Excellent.
Don't worry, Jimmy Fallon performed "Desire" with U2 at Madison Square Gardens and it was fabulous. But what's really amazing is that he self-identified as "Singer with a Broken Finger."
Over on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Meghan Trainor stopped by and a) was surprisingly hilarious, b) delivered a great impression of her brother's drunk girlfriend, and c) lives with her siblings in some rented mansion.

This might actually qualify as an audition for "Game of Thrones" Season 6. Heaven knows they drop the c-word like candy from a piñata -- and Arya could use a new partner in crime on that front. Either way, Ryan Reynolds has our attention, for unexpected reasons. And here's a lesson for you: If you tweet about a celebrity, without even tweeting to them directly, they may reply anyway.
One fan (or non-fan) just announced online that she didn't know the difference between Ryan Gosling and Ryan Reynolds. She didn't even seem to be hating, just sort of letting us know they are interchangeable in her mind.
Totally understandable, even if that's not our personal celeb confusion crisis. (The Chrises. It's the Chrises for us.) But cue Ryan Reynolds with a Nsfw reply on how one can tell the difference between himself and "The Notebook" alum:
Different hair colors. Ryan Gosling has light Blond hair.

Way back in 2011, news arrived that "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Final Destination" producer John Rickard set up an adaptation of quarter-eating arcade game "Rampage" at New Line. And that was the last anybody heard about it, because really, who is asking for a "Rampage" movie? Well, apparently Hollywood is, because they've just got a big star attached. Dwayne Johnson is now flexing his muscles for the project, with the live-action movie looking to shoot next summer. Ryan Engle ("Non-Stop") is writing the script, and while it's not certain how the game will be turned into a narrative, you may have forgotten that in the video game, the gorilla, lizard, and werewolf are actually the result of an experiment gone wrong on three humans, George, Lizzie, and Ralph. Jessa and Ben take Paris!
This week's 19 Kids and Counting follows the newly christened Seewalds on their European honeymoon.
"It seems like I'm in a dream that I'm actually married now," says Ben in an exclusive clip obtained by People. "It hasn't quite set in. It just seems so unreal. We're married now and we're in Paris of all places – it's like a fairy tale or something."
Less of a fairy tale is his fear of heights, as Jessa, 22, cajoles Ben, 19, into standing on the glass floor of the Eiffel Tower.
"It wasn't that bad, was it?" Jessa asks Ben in an interview segment.

Don’t get too excited, guys and gals. These two two aren’t romantically involved. While accepting the award solo because Ansel couldn’t be there, Shailene made sure to note that those kisses didn’t mean anything outside of the set.
“If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to kiss your brother, it’s pretty great,” she said.

Michael Keaton Deploys ‘Multiplicity’ Machine, Christian Bale’s Batman Voice in ‘SNL’ Promos (Video)
Someone draw Cecily Strong a cold shower — Michael Keaton just used with the gravely Batman voice popularized by fellow caped crusader Christian Bale. On Tuesday’s “Saturday Night Live” promos, the “Birdman” star is joined by “SNL” standout Strong to plug this weekend’s live sketch comedy show, which has Carly Rae Jepsen booked as musical guest. When the NBC staple cold-opens at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, Keaton will officially be a member of the three-time hosts’ club. Keaton and Strong also bring back the broadcast network’s “The More You Know” public service spots. They then perform a purposefully terrible celebrity news show.

Now that Chris Soules's season of The Bachelor is about to head to the fantasy suites, we have one vital question:
Just how many of the couples are having sex on ABC's hit franchise?
Host Chris Harrison stopped by the People Now studios to provide an answer that, quite frankly, was way more modest than we expected.
"If I'm in Vegas and setting the odds," Harrison tells People, "I'd go so low as to say 67 percent [of couples are having sex]."
In another behind-the-scenes tidbit, Harrison, 43, also reveals that producers actually have to think ahead in regard to their supply of roses.

Justified, Season 6, Episode 3: “Noblesse Oblige”
Written by Taylor Elmore and Benjamin Cavell
Directed by Peter Weller
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et on FX
The notion of Boyd Crowder: Ultimate Hillbilly Crook has been a pervasive one on Justified for quite some time now, arguably to the series’ detriment. That near-deification might help to sell us on the stakes of the eventual Boyd v. Raylan cataclysm, but it doesn’t make Boyd a particularly interesting person to spend time with, at least on paper. (Being portrayed by Walton Goggins, one of the very best actors in the medium, helps a lot in this regard.) If “Noblesse Oblige” accomplishes nothing else, it at least briefly gets us back in contact with Boyd Crowder, the flesh-and-blood ne’er-do-well who occasionally just likes to get well beyond shitfaced with the woman he loves.
That hilarious opening scene also winds up doing a favor for Joelle Carter,...

Dear White People is writer/director Justin Simien’s clever and provocative take on how young black students cope with the issue of assimilation on the majority white (fictional) Winchester University campus. The title refers to a radio show hosted by Sam White (played by the excellent Tessa Thompson), a militant student, who delights in slinging bon mots at the collective white student body. She comes up with witticisms such as “Dear White people: the minimum requirement of black friends needed to not seem racist has just been raised to two.” And then tops it off with, “Sorry, but your weed man, Tyrone, does not count.” Other sharp-tongued epithets include: “Dear White People, dating a black person just to p-ss off your parents is itself a form of racism,” and “even if Obama cured cancer, white people would still be enraged with him. And he’s only half black.
