Kanoon review :
Directorial venture of famous Marathi actress Sushama Shiromanee who had starred as lead in hits like Fatakdi (1979), Bhingari (1976), Mosambi Narangi (1981) Bhannat Bhanu (1982) and also produced the Mithun da film Pyar Ka Karz (1990); Kanoon was a typical 90s style actioner pairing Ajay Devgan and Urmila Matondkar for the first time.
Gulshan Grover played the main villain Raja Thakur who has an axe to grind with Ajay's family - pitaji Alok Nath playing a judge and TV wale Ramayan ka Ram Arun Govil cast as a police officer here. Interestingly, Reema Lagoo playing his wife is called Seeta. Prem Chopra was earnest in an unconvincing double role.
The action scenes by Veeru Devgan were well executed, specially the climax. He always brought out the best in his son Ajay whether it was Phool Aur Kaante (1991) or Jigar (1992). Unfortunately, Kanoon didnt work at the box office as Ajay was going through a low phase in 1994 with string of flops like Platform (1993), Dhanwaan (1993), Ek Hi Raasta (1993), Shaktiman (1993) and Dil Hai Betaab (1993). Kanoon's publicity was also quite low key for a film of its stature.
Ram Laxman's music was also a letdown and easily, a couple of these speedbreaker songs could've been cut off from the film.
Sushama Shiromanee's writing and direction were good but still Kanoon ended up being a loss making venture for her. It was the last film she directed till date. I had seen the film at Dadar's Kohinoor cinema and enjoyed it a lot. Infact, I like most of Devgan's action films from that era starting with Phool Aur Kaante, then Jigar, Divyashakti (1993), Platform (1993) etc. Kanoon included!!
