The "lost" episode
preppy-323 May 2006
Christmastime with the Ricardos, the Mertzes and Little Ricky. Little Ricky wants to see Santa. Naturally Lucy dresses as him to surprise the little boy.

Basically this isn't a new episode--it contains plenty of flashbacks to previous seasons. I heard this was considered lost and was found under Desi Arnazs' bed after his death. It was restored and aired (just once) on CBS in 1989. It's not great but just seeing the old gang in a somewhat "new" episode was plenty of fun. This is probably still out of syndication because of the flashbacks but worth catching if you're a Lucy fan.

Entertainment 101

Warning: Spoilers
The end makes the episode worthwhile. Fred wasn't there? Why are there five? OMG- It's Santa himself!

Lucy and Ricky explaining the mysteries of Santa to Little Ricky is priceless.

The scene of the gang getting ready for Lucy to go to the hospital to deliver the baby is Entertainment 101. It is a great example of set up, anticipation and pay off.

Christmas episode

Warning: Spoilers
It's nice that they have a Christmas episode but it's not one of the better ones. I actually think a Halloween episode would have fit I Love Lucy better.

The episode is a lot of flashbacks and much of the episode centers on Lucy trying to even out the tree . Lucy is trimming the tree in more ways than one!

Little Ricky also is curious about Santa Clause.

The humor is lately largely missing from this one. Maybe they were going for more sentimentally but I I Love Lucy could have really made an entertaining Christmas episode. They do have Lucy, Ricky , Ethel and Fred dressed up as Santa and the "real" Santa showing up but it not exactly funny. Might be worth an occasional viewing.

More appreciated back then than today

Warning: Spoilers
"I Love Lucy Christmas Show" is a holiday special from almost 60 years ago starring the cast from "I Love Lucy". Lead actress is Golde Globe winner Lucille Ball and the supporting cast includes several actors too that received lots of awards recognition. Unfortunately, I must say that this slightly-under-30-minute short film was not too convincing for me, neither in terms of the jokes nor in terms of the romance or music. The switch between color and black-and-white was also slightly irritating. I guess this one has not aged particularly well and I can very well imagine that people back then found it funnier. Humour certainly was different back then. I would not even say that they had worse humor, only that it has evolved somehow and is different today. If somebody made a comedy with these mustache-on-female jokes today, I am sure it would get really bad reviews. All in all, i cannot say I enjoyed the watch really. Thumbs down from me. Not recommended.

A 'Cop-Out' Clip Show Episode
kgraovac21 December 2023
The Ricardos and the Mertzes reminisce as they trim the tree on Xmas Eve.

This episode is one of those cop-out clip shows. We see clips from when Ricky finds out Lucy's pregnant, the panic bit before she leaves for the hospital, and the barbershop quartet performance. None of the flashbacks are especially funny or among the show's best/most iconic.

The wraparound scenes are more chuckle-to-yourself than hilarious, so there is not much to recommend here. The final scene has all four main characters in Santa suits - until Fred enters from the kitchen door. So, who's the fifth Santa? Could it be?....

I was never impressed with this one. You're better off watching either of the two LUCY SHOW Xmas episodes, which are at least more original and funnier. 5/10.
