The story of "Playhouse", is based loosely on the true accounts of the Ghosts of the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Many of the cast and crew, including writer director Hunter F. Roberts, are graduates of Point Park Conservatory which uses the Pittsburgh Playhouse as its training ground.
Since the film was based on the still-standing Pittsburgh Playhouse, it was selected as the original Theater location for the project. At the last minute scheduling problems forced them elsewhere, and thusly all the theater interiors in "Playhouse" were shot at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater of Pittsburgh instead.
