The events of this episode are referenced in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), when Indy tells Mutt that he once rode with Pancho Villa.
When Indiana arrives at the Egyptian dig site, he passes a group of diggers. The work song they sing is the same that the diggers that Indiana employs in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" sing when they are digging for the Well of the Souls.
Mike Moroff, who plays Pancho Villa, had a personal connection to the part: his grandfather actually rode with Villa, and his aunt received love letters from the legendary revolutionary (which Moroff eventually inherited).
In the "Mexico, March 1916" section, Sean Patrick Flanery rides Tornado, the horse Harrison Ford's used in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989).
When Lucasfilm started to release the The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1992) on video in chronological order, the two halves that make up this pilot were separated (and the framing sequences featuring George Hall as Old Indy deleted). The second half, featuring Sean Patrick Flanery as 16 year old Indy (Mexico 1916) was paired with Princeton, February 1916 (1993) and released on video as Chapter seven: The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Spring Break Adventure (1999) in 1999. The first half (Egypt, 1908), with Corey Carrier as 9 year old Indy, became Chapter One of The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: My First Adventure (2000), accompanied by an unscreened adventure set in Tangiers. This chapter was finally released October 23 2007 on the first disc of The Adventures of Indiana Jones Volume I DVD box.
