Cronenberg studies violence well
20 April 2006 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Disguised as a stream-lined thriller, A History of Violence pulls you into the seedy inner workings of a man trying to escape his past, in quite an intelligent effort. Viggo Mortensen portrays Tom Stall, a man who seems quite content in his Midwestern farm life. He runs Stall's diner, and cares for his two children. All the while performing the duties of a loyal husband. His seemingly serene existence is shattered when two vile criminals attempt to rob his place of business. He kills them both in expert fashion. Tom is branded a hero, and his story lands him fifteen minutes of fame. Before the press attention blows over Stall is visited by a mysterious stranger(Ed Harris)who insists Tom is intimately linked to him and to his past in Philadelphia. Ed Harris's character Carl Fogarty appears to be collecting on an old vendetta from Tom's past life. Is it a case of mistaken identity? or is Stall harboring a dark secret? Cronenberg's handling of the subject is astonishing. If this screenplay were put into the hands of a director for hire who knows how it would have turned out. Fortunately for us it didn't. He brings us both his unique vision as an artist, and a collaborative effort from a great cast that includes Maria Bello, and William Hurt in a Oscar nominated performance. I can't be as articulate as others in praise of this film. A satisfactory description kind of alludes me. It did generate a great emotional response from me, and I can say If you enjoy films that pull no punches, check this one out.
