Touching, surprisingly funny...true drama
katzcats518 April 2004
This movie takes the viewer on a journey through the initial discussions between Mark and Eric about whether and how to have children, to the long-awaited conclusion. In the process, we are treated to many glimpses of their loving and playful relationship, friendships, and loving, somewhat offbeat, relationships with their own parents. We also meet Wen, the chosen surrogate, and her family and community. This movie is extremely touching and surprisingly funny. The insemination scenes, for example, had the audience howling. It was a real treat to "meet" each person in this movie, including Wen's own (pre-adolescent?) son. If you get the chance to see this movie, it is the chance to witness a small gem.

Artificial Insemination Homestyle.

Warning: Spoilers
Don't watch this movie while eating Burger King. I made that mistake and almost paid dearly for it. The artificial insemination scenes were done by the surrogate at home and...gross. I was eating and I almost threw up. There should have been a warning on this.

I pretty much rented this Doc because I wanted to be nice and have a social conscience. Turned out it was way cool. The people in it were total far-out characters but yet kind of nice and down to earth. Freaky. Besides the really shocking insemination scene, there was a scene where the surrogate miscarried the baby so they brought the dead baby home from the hospital and buried it in the backyard. Cool. The insemination and the birth were both done at the surrogates home which was interesting and trippy. But it's the insemination that freaks you out. It was way more shocking than the turkey baster insemination scene in that scary 'Chucky' movie with Jennifer Tilly.

All in all this movie was a lot more interesting(and a lot crazier)than I thought it was going to be. It's definitely worth checking out because it's not boring. Although I thought the two gay guys were really unprofessional in the beginning because they kept giggling and cracking up every time they looked at the camera.
