CANNES -- As many executives started to trail out of Cannes as MIPTV wound down, the changeable weather during the first three days of the confab seemed to reflect the market's mood: overcast in places but with sunny patches breaking through. Most attendees agreed that the corridors of the Palais had seen a satisfactory level of traffic -- sellers' timetables seemed as busy as ever -- and there was a steady flow of announcements even if there were few standout deals. "Compared to the last couple of years, there's a really positive attitude," said Leslie Jones, vp international sales at NBC Enterprises. Jones reported a strong interest with deals pending on sex-therapy comedy Significant Others, documentaries Princess Diana: The Secret Tapes and Born Rich and its new format Knock First, from the creators of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. "And a lot of people are coming back for 'Queer Eye' because they've seen the ratings in Australia, where it's getting a 52% share in its key demographic," Jones said.
CANNES -- NBC Enterprises on Monday launched its exclusive two-part documentary Princess Diana: The Secret Tapes, which offers a unique chance to hear the late princess tell some of her own story from beyond the grave. The network's international sales arm learned only Friday that it had clearance to start sales on the show, and it is already proving a hot ticket on the Croisette. "I'm not surprised at the interest from the U.K., but I am surprised at the global interest in the show from the rest of world; it goes to show the power of this woman," NBC Enterprises executive vp Jerry Petry said.
