The film is based on the case of the Utrecht serial rapist, a series of sexual offenses in and around the Dutch city of Utrecht between 1995 and 2001. The case became known through a long-term active search for the perpetrator. After a bicycle theft in 2014, a suspect was arrested using DNA research. He was suspected of 22 offenses but only in four cases was the evidence hard enough for a lawsuit. He didn't confess and invoked his right to remain silent. At first instance in 2016, the court found the defendant guilty of four rape cases. He was sentenced to a prison sentence of 16 years. In the appeal the penalty remained unchanged.
